The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, the Arkansas Geological Commission, and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has monitored water levels in the Sparta Sand of Claiborne Group and Memphis Sand of Claiborne Group since the 1920's. Ground-water withdrawals have increased while water levels have declined since monitoring was initiated. This report has been produced to describe ground-water levels in the aquifers in the Sparta Sand and Memphis Sand and provide information for the management of this valuable resource. The 2005 potentiometric-surface map of the aquifers in the Sparta Sand and Memphis Sand was constructed using water-level data...

We report chemical analyses of stream-water, stream-sediment, soil, soil-water, bedrock, and vegetation samples collected from the headwaters of the Delta River (Tangle Lakes District, Mount Hayes 1:250,000-scale quadrangle) in east-central Alaska for the period June 20-25, 2006. Additionally, we present mineralogic analyses of stream sediment, concentrated by panning. The study area includes the southwestward extent of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Delta River Mining District (Bittenbender and others, 2007), including parts of the Delta River Archeological District, and encompasses an area of about 500 km2(approximately bordered by the Denali Highway to the south, near Round Tangle Lake, northward to the...

This dataset consists of contours showing the generalized depth to water for the shallow groundwater system in the Lower Gunnison River Basin in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. Depth to water was contoured from values in the raster dataset dtw. The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

This point dataset contains water-level information concerning depth to water, potentiometric-surface altitude, and saturated thickness for the shallow groundwater system at selected well and borehole locations in the Lower Gunnison River Basin in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. Depth-to-water data were compiled from measurements reported by the Colorado Division of Water Resources, U.S. Geological Survey, and Bureau of Reclamation. Potentiometric-surface altitude values were computed from the potentiometric-surface altitude raster dataset (potalt). Saturated-thickness values were computed from the saturated-thickness raster dataset (satthk). The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset...

This dataset contains .csv and .tif image files in support of the conclusions published in "Mediterranean California’s water use future under multiple scenarios of developed and agricultural land use change" in the journal PLOS One. We used the USGS's LUCAS model to examine a broad suite of spatially explicit future land use scenarios and their associated county-level water use demand, including the historical (1992-2011) and projected periods (2012-2062) across 40 Monte Carlo simulations. We examined a range of potential water demand futures sampled from a 20-year record of historical (1992-2012) data to develop a suite of potential future land change scenarios from 2012-2062. These scenario simulations include...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides derivative county-level statistics of water used by Kansas irrigators in 2014. The published county-level application rate statistics from the previous 4 years (2010–13) are shown with the 2014 statistics and are used to calculate a 5-year average. The 2014 annual total precipitation and the current 30-year climatic normal (based on 1981–2010) are also shown by county. Other data published in this data release include the amount of water used, irrigated acres, and application rates by crop type and the amount of water used and number of irrigated acres for each irrigation method. Total reported irrigation water use in 2014 was 3.3 million acre-feet of water...

This dataset contains 20-ft contours for the 2013 Sparta-Memphis aquifer potentiometric-surface map in Arkansas. The potentiometric-surface shows altitudes at which the water levels would have risen in tightly-cased wells and represents conditions during the period from January through May 2013. Groundwater-level data from 306 wells cased completely in and with the screened interval open to the Sparta-Memphis aquifer are publicly available from the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Water Information System.

An upward-looking acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM, SonTek SW, 3.0 MHz) located in a tidal channel of the Nisqually River Delta at site D3 (N 47d 05’ 36.5”/W 122d 42’ 42.9”) measured water level and current velocity at 15-minute intervals from April 1, 2017 to July 20, 2017 (80.9 days, excluding missing periods). This site is in a tidal channel at a levee breach where flow is tidally influenced. The water depth of the sensor ranged from 0.05 to 3.04 m and may have been lower during periods of extreme low tide. The elevation (NAVD88) of the ADVM sensor was surveyed by RTN-GPS. The offset to convert all water depth time-series data to water surface elevation (NAVD88) is 0.47 meters. The instrument temperature...

Clean water is important for a variety of uses, including drinking, recreation, and as habitat for aquatic species. Nonpoint-source pollution, such as nutrients, sediment, and pesticides from agricultural runoff, is a major cause of impaired water quality in the United States . Vegetation and soil in natural land cover help to remove pollutants from runoff water before it reaches streams and other waterways by slowing water flow and physically trapping sediment. To assess the spatial distribution of water purification potential in the southeastern United States, we mapped the demand for purification as the total area of agricultural land and the supply of natural land cover in the flowpath over which water moves...

An upward-looking acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM, SonTek SW, 3.0 MHz) located in a tidal channel of the Nisqually River Delta at site D4 (N 47° 05’ 37”/W 122° 42’ 18.7”) measured water depth and current velocity at 15-minute intervals from October 13, 2016 to May 3, 2017. This site is in a tidal channel at a levee breach where flow is tidally influenced. The water depth of the sensor ranged from 0.19 to 3.71 m and may have been lower during periods of extreme low tide. The sensor elevation was adjusted during inspection on 10/03/2017 and a correction of +0.33 m was added to water depth from 10/03/2017 to 03/13/2017. The elevation (NAVD88) of the ADVM sensor was survey by RTN-GPS. The offset to convert all...

The Yukon River basin is a vast and diverse ecosystem covering more than 330,000 square miles, an area larger than Texas. Approximately 126,000 people live within the basin and depend on the Yukon River and its tributaries for drinking water, commerce, and recreational and subsistence fish and game resources. Much of the Yukon River basin is underlain by permafrost containing vast amounts of organic carbon and nutrients. Recent climatic warming of the basin has resulted in lengthening of the growing season, melting of permafrost, deepening of the soil active layer, drying of upland soils, and shrinking of wetlands. These mostly terrestrial effects also affect the hydrology of the basin, changing the timing, magnitude,...

This data release contains information to support water quality modeling in the Delaware River Basin (DRB). These data support both process-based and machine learning approaches to water quality modeling, including the prediction of stream temperature. This section provides spatial data files that describe the rivers, reservoirs, and observational data in the Delaware River Basin included in this release. One shapefile of polylines describes the 459 river reaches that define the modeling network, and another shapefile of polygons includes the three reservoirs (Pepacton, Cannonsville, and Neversink) for which data are included in this release. Additionally, a point shapefile contains locations of monitoring sites...
