Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve is the largest park in the National Park system. It covers more than 13 million acres and is part of the largest protected ecosystem on the planet. This report, written by Lil Gilmore, Biological Technician for the Park/Preserve, and David Goldsmith, an intern from the Chicago Botanic Garden, describes the 2007 Invasive Plant Management Program. David Goldsmith prepared the GIS maps found in Appendix A. A long range dual frequency identification sonar (DIDSON-LR) was used to enumerate the chinook salmon escapement to the Big Salmon River in 2006, as well as determine associated run timing, and diel migration patterns. This was the second year of sonar operation at this site. The sonar site was located on the Big Salmon River at the same location as in 2005, approximately 1.5 km upstream of the confluence with the Yukon River. Partial weirs placed on both sides of the river were used to restrict fish passage through a 34 m opening. The St. Elias region of North America occupies portions of British Columbia, Alaska, and Yukon and consists of a contiguous network of protected areas. Available information on avian and mammalian diversity in each of the region's five major protected areas (Kluane National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park, and Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge) was integrated to create a species checklist as part of an ongoing effort to create a region-wide ecological database for research and management purposes. Sexual segregation occurs frequently in sexually dimorphic species, and it may be influenced by differential habitat requirements between sexes or by social or evolutionary mechanisms that maintain separation of sexes regardless of habitat selection. For 40 years, the Biological Survey of Canada (BSC) has encouraged and organised studies of the arthropod fauna of Canada, through the wide involvement of the scientific community and the leadership of an expert steering committee.
