IMPORTANT NOTE: A more recent version of this data release is available from this link. The Edwards aquifer in south central Texas is one of the most permeable and productive aquifers in the United States and is the major source of public water supply for Bexar, Comal, Hays, Medina, and Uvalde Counties. The Edwards aquifer also supplies large quantities of water to agriculture, business, and industry in the region. The major artesian springs of the Edwards aquifer provide water for recreational activities, businesses, and downstream users, and provide habitat for several threatened or endangered species. The areas pertinent to the recharge process are the catchment area and the recharge zone. The catchment area...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the York County Planning Commission and York County Conservation District, has collected discrete stream samples for analysis of suspended-sediment, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus concentrations at six real-time streamflow and water-quality monitoring (turbidity, nitrate, and specific conductance) stations located in York County, Pennsylvania. Data were collected from 2019-2023 at these stations for the application of predicting suspended-sediment, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus concentrations using real-time continuous turbidity, nitrate, specific conductance, and streamflow. Regression equations were developed by relating discrete-sample suspended...

Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and suspended-sediment (SS) loads, in Fairfax County, Virginia streams have been calculated using monitoring data from five intensively monitored watersheds for the period from water year (October - September) 2008-2017. Nutrient and suspended-sediment loads were computed using a surrogate (multiple-linear regression) approach with lab analyzed N, P, and SS samples as the response variable and basic water-quality parameters (e.g. turbidity, specific conductance, pH, water temperature), streamflow, and time and seasonal terms that could be measured continuously as predictor (surrogate) variables. The load results represent the total mass of N, P, and SS that was exported from each of...

Field measurements of flow velocity were acquired from a reach of the Tanana River near Nenana, Alaska, July 24, 2019, to support research on estimating surface flow velocities from remotely sensed data via particle image velocimetry (PIV). The velocity measurements included in this data release were obtained using a TRDI RiverRay acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a boat with an outboard motor. This data release provides depth-averaged flow velocities derived from the raw ADCP data using the TRDI WinRiver II processing software. The spatial location of each velocity measurement was obtained using a differential GPS included as part of the RiverRay instrument package. The map projection and...

Efficiency of seepage meters, long considered a fixed property associated with the meter design, is not constant in highly permeable sediments. Instead, results from this study indicate that efficiency varies substantially with seepage-bag fullness, duration of bag attachment, depth of meter insertion into the sediments, and seepage velocity. Efficiency also varies substantially in response to variable hydraulic conductivity. The first worksheet titled "Literature efficiency" presents seepage-meter efficiency values from the literature to show the progression of efficiency versus time. The remaining 7 worksheets present time-series data showing seepage-meter efficiency related to several different tests: (1) flow...
Streamflow wading measurements were made on March 26, 2014 within the Deer Creek watershed in St. Louis County, Missouri, following U.S. Geological Survey methods in Turnipseed and Sauer (2010). This effort occurred during a date and time void of rainfall or snowmelt runoff to properly evaluate a base-flow condition. Measuring locations were chosen based on inflow junctions (for example open channel tributaries or pipe outflows) such that main stem streamflow could be evaluated above and below the inflow. A total of 31 main stem and 25 inflow streamflow measurements were made over 9 miles along the main stem reach of Deer Creek starting at Magna Carta Drive. This data release includes a table of the streamflow...

This child data release provides the information needed to download from the USGS EarthExplorer portal digital orthophotos acquired along the Tanana and Nenana Rivers near Nenana, Alaska, on August 19, 2021. The primary goal of this study was to assess the feasibility of estimating surface flow velocities from optical image sequences acquired from a fixed-wing aircraft flying along the river by tracking water surface features via particle image velocimetry (PIV). Remote sensing of flow velocities could provide a more efficient, cost-effective alternative to conventional field-based methods of measuring channel hydraulics and thus become an important component of non-contact approaches to streamgaging. Moreover,...

This USGS data release presents tabular data of daily and annual (for the 9-month period March 1 through November 30) estimates of concentrations and fluxes of total and dissolved phosphorus, total nitrogen, chloride, and total suspended solids for 18 monitored tributaries of Lake Champlain. Annual estimates of concentration and flux are presented as 9-month data because the frequency and type of sample data from winter months are inadequate for making meaningful wintertime estimates. Daily estimates generally cover the period March 1990 through November 2014 and annual estimates 1990 through 2014, although dates vary by constituent and tributary, depending on availability of raw data. The dataset consists of 6...
