Estimates_By_Year_1968to2005.csv summarizes the Alaska Trumpeter Swan Survey abundance estimates by survey year, 1968 through 2005. (Note: 2010 and 2015 estimates are summarized separately due to their different survey designs.)

This collection of two separate geopackages contains the sample maps (i.e., sampling units) that were surveyed during the 2010 and 2015 Alaska Trumpeter Swan Surveys. The geopackages are named YYYY_AK_TRUS_Sample_Maps.gpkg, where YYYY = survey year. The sample maps are U.S. Geological Survey 1:63,360 scale quadrangle maps.

This collection comprises the reports, produced by MBM-Alaska, which summarized each of the 10 Alaska Trumpeter Swan Surveys that were conducted between 1968 and 2015. The collection contains one report file per survey: YYYY_AK_Trumpeter_Swan_Survey_Report.pdf, where YYYY = survey year.
This file documents changes that were made to the original “raw” transcribed data during the quality assurance / quality control process when duplicate records were deleted, typographical errors were corrected, and character encoding was revised to conform to the current data standards.

This GeoPackage contains the analysis strata (“YKD_AnalysisStrata”) used in calculating population indices for ducks, loons, mergansers, grebes, gulls, and terns. This layer was created from the file (“YKD_DesignStrata”) when the existing rotating panel design was developed in 1999. This layer was originally created as an ArcInfo coverage, saved to a shapefile, and imported to SQLite Database format.

The standard operating procedures (SOP) document for the overall WBPHS, including the Alaska strata, was updated by USFWS Division of Migratory Bird Management Branch of Migratory Bird Surveys on 26 April 2021. This SOP applies to all survey crews, including Alaska’s.

The WBPHS_AK bird observation data are archived as two separate datasets: 1) the data as originally transcribed by survey observers; and 2) the data as edited via a quality-control (QC) process. Among other things, the QC process removed records of certain non-waterfowl species, and it changed some species codes to meet the MBM-Alaska Waterfowl Program’s standardized format for transect waterfowl surveys. The QC dataset is that which MBM-Alaska uses for analyses and is considered the most appropriate for sharing with other users. This collection of files comprises the QC WBPHS_AK bird-observation data. There is one file for each year and observer: WBPHS_YYYY_QCObs_OOO.csv, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer initials.

This GeoPackage, WBPHS_Segments.gpkg, contains the WBPHS survey design segments that are flown in Alaska and Old Crow Flats, Yukon Territory. (One or more contiguous segments comprise a transect.) The set of segments contained in this file was established in 1964. In the years 1957-1963, the survey design included many, but not all, of these segments. Additional segments were flown in some or all years during 1957-1963 that were discontinued in 1964. The metadata author was unable to interpret existing survey documentation sufficiently to determine the locations of the discontinued segments. Segment 01-06-03 has not been surveyed since 2010, due to excessive urbanization and resulting safety and disturbance concerns....

WBPHS_Survey_Crews.csv is a table that provides survey aircraft and crew information by year. It lists the type(s) of aircraft flown, the names of crew members, the aircraft seat(s) they occupied, and the code(s) used in the bird dataset “Observer” field to represent them.

Starting in 2003, a digital survey notes file was created each year upon completion of the WBPHS_AK survey to document certain logistics information. The file format evolved over time; files from 2003 through 2009 are text files, whereas files from 2010 to present are Microsoft Excel files. This archived collection comprises the set of digital survey notes created from 2003 to present.

The 25,000 km of shoreline in southeast Alaska was surveyed for waterbirds by fixed-wing aircraft in summer and winter during the period 1997 to 2002. A ground/boat survey double sampled 20% of the summer habitat and 5% of the winter habitat to adjust and enhance the air survey. The most abundant species during the summer surveys, with visibility correction factors applied, were gulls (Larus spp.; 306,200, CV = 0.004), scoters (Melanitta spp.; 185,700, CV = 0.004), and Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus; 34,640, CV = 0.03). The most abundant species observed during the winter surveys were goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica and B. clangula; 121,920, CV = 0.01), gulls (105,000, CV = 0.01), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos;...

Several photo ‘observers’ examine images and enter data based on what they see in the imagery. The first observer, ‘PRI’ = the primary observer, looks at all photos taken and records bird presence/absence. The ‘SEC’ = the secondary observer, speciates the birds found by the primary observer, and counts the Steller’s eiders. The ‘TER’ = the tertiary observer, reviews the speciation and/or counts of the secondary observer as a check. The ‘ERR’ = the error rate observer, independently records bird presence/absence in a subset (10%) of the photos that the primary observer viewed as a check on the PRI accuracy. When all are complete, they are combined into the final data table, Combined Datasheet_STEI Overhead, that...

A survey area polygon was constructed and used to create a series of survey transects bounded by the polygon. The polygon was created in ArcGIS (can also be built in Google Maps or Google Earth). The AeroScientific software FlightPlanner used this polygon to create transects within the polygon. See linked document for detailed instructions for these processes. This document is:Construction of STO transects_metadata.docx

Aerial survey track files were recorded by each observer using Panasonic Toughpad or Toughbook computers running the software program “RECORD” (John I. Hodges, MBM-Alaska). The RECORD program was activated during the survey before arriving at the first transect and shut down after the last transect was completed, prior to engine shut-down. “Raw” track files recorded the flightpath of the aircraft including the area surveyed on each transect. GPS coordinates were captured every five seconds using a recreational grade receiver with an estimated positional accuracy of 5-10 meters after the software program was activated. These raw track files have not been quality checked, so they may contain missing or erroneous coordinates...

FY2011Thousands of data points have been collected by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Nevada Division of Wildlife from the 1950s to the present describing the distribution of declining native redband and endangered Lahontan cutthroat trout, and the invasive, nonnative brown and brook trout. USGS analyzed this data to understand the climate-related changes to species distributions and model extinction risk. The results, submittedfor publication, will be used by the State of Oregon as it drafts conservation plans for redband trout and by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection in drafting water quality criteria to protect and monitor the states coldwater fisheries.

This dataset, WinterSimplified.csv, contains the bird and marine mammal data collected during the 1997-2002 aerial winter Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey, edited for quality-control (QC) purposes. During the QC process, observations of the same species that were less than 0.3 nautical miles apart were merged. Species codes of certain species were changed to a group code, e.g., scoter-specific species (BLSC, SUSC, WWSC) to SCOT. Species that were considered inadequately surveyed due to detection issues or inappropriateness of the survey design were removed.

After each survey, camera memory cards are downloaded and organized into folders by YEAR, SURVEY, CAMERA, BATCH, PHOTO#. Then, files are renamed to give every file in every survey and every year a unique name. Naming convention consists of: survey name, survey year, month and day, survey number, camera number, batch number, photo number. Thus, all photo names will follow the convention: STO18_1004_S1C1B1_0237.JPG which in this case = STEI Overhead in 2018, Month & Day, Survey#, Camera#, Batch#, Image#. These file names are entered into a spreadsheet along with other variables in preparation for analysis. As photos are analyzed by various observers, different subsets of photos are placed in separate folders for observers...
