This report includes the previously unpublished primary and derivative data sets that underpin the construction of the three dimensional (3D) geologic map of the upper part of the Earth's crust beneath the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, California. The primary data is X,Y,Z locations of stratigraphic horizons and, to a much lesser extent, geologic structures where penetrated by oil and gas wells in the subsurface as recorded in well logs and well records. The derivative data sets were constructed to more closely constrain the principal stratigraphic horizons and geologic structures that were incorporated into the 3D model. The derivative data sets are extracted from the principal data set or a combination of...

The Terrestrial Analogs Data Portal (TADP; https://tadp.astrogeology.usgs.gov/) has been established as a repository and data discovery portal which leverages USGS ScienceBase, a trusted long-term digital repository that provides access to all USGS data services. Creation of the TADP service is in response to a number of NASA-generated reports identifying the need for a permanent planetary analog repository which adheres to standards-based archives. Presented here is the first version of the Planetary Aeolian Analog Database (PAAD) that will be incorporated into the TADP. This dataset is focused on dune field analogs, currently comprising 45 sites from all over the world and includes a set of "core" attributes (that...

Management and disturbances have significant effects on grassland forage production. When using satellite remote sensing to monitor climate impacts such as drought stress on annual forage production, minimizing these effects provides a clearer climate signal in the productivity data. The use of an ecosystem performance approach for assessment of seasonal and interannual climate impacts on forage production in semi-arid grasslands proved to be a successful method in a case study covering the Nebraska Sandhills. In this study we developed a time series (2000-2018) of the Expected Ecosystem Performance (EEP), which serves as a proxy for annual forage production after accounting for non-climatic influences, while minimizing...

Global wind energy has expanded 5-fold since 2010 and is predicted to expand another 8–10-fold over the next 30 years. Wakes generated by wind turbines can alter downwind microclimates and potentially downwind vegetation. However, the design of past studies has made it difficult to isolate the impact of wake effects on vegetation from land cover change. We used hourly wind data to model wake and non-wake zones around 17 wind facilities across the U.S. and compared remotely-sensed vegetation greenness in wake and non-wake zones before and after construction. We located sampling sites only in the dominant vegetation type and in areas that were not disturbed before or after construction. We found evidence for wake...

Utilizing the USGS Meteor Crater Sample Collection, we sampled impact melt particles for geochemical and textural characterization using a scanning electron microscope and electron microprobe. Samples were collected from a range of different depths and distances from the crater rim, all within the proximal ejecta blanket. By using the Meteor Crater Sample Collection, in which all samples have known geospatial locations, we are able to quantify the spatial relationship and variability between mixing of melted target rocks and the Canyon Diablo meteorite. Presented here are high-resolution backscattered electron images of all analyzed impact melt particles, and geochemical data for glass and individual mineral phases...

The Central Virginia Seismic Zone (CVSZ) is an area of historically increased earthquake activity that is of particular importance due to its proximity to many well-populated regions in the Virginia Piedmont. Notably, the epicentral region of the 2011 magnitude (M)5.8 earthquake in Mineral, Virginia falls within the CVSZ (Horton and Williams, 2012), making this region relevant not just historically, but also in more recent times. Thus, the U.S. Geological Survey is focusing on detailed bedrock mapping of the central Virginia Piedmont to better understand bedrock and fault geometry, fault history, and seismic risk potential. Though the central Virginia Piedmont has been mapped to some extent in previous studies (Hopkins,...

This data release presents geologic map data for the bedrock geology of the Durango 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle. Geologic mapping incorporates new interpretive contributions and compilation from published geologic map data sources primarily ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:50,000 scale. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on digital elevation model and natural-color image data sources to improve spatial resolution of the data. Spatial adjustments and new interpretations also eliminate mismatches at source map boundaries. This data set represents only the bedrock geology; deposits of unconsolidated, surficial materials that are typically, but not exclusively, Quaternary...

This digital data release contains geospatial data for the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of the Grand Island 1 degree by 2 degree quadrangle, Nebraska, originally published by Dreeszen and others (1973). The database includes line and polygon features depicting the extent of the Miocene Ogallala Formation and underlying Cretaceous rocks. The original map also included shaded patches indicating outcrop areas, and contour lines depicting the thickness of Quaternary deposits; these are not included in this database. The spatial data are accompanied by non-spatial tables that describe the sources of geologic information, a description of geologic map units, a glossary of terms, and a Data Dictionary that duplicates the...

Geophysical measurements were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at five sites in Interior Alaska in September 2021 for the purposes of imaging permafrost structure and quantifying variations in subsurface moisture content in relation to thaw features. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements were made along transects 110-222 meters (m) in length to quantify subsurface permafrost characteristics. ERT transects were collected across a fireline boundary within the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site where repeat measurements have been made since 2014; across and adjacent to two thermokarst lakes, Vault Lake and Goldstream Lake; and along two profiles at the North Star golf...

This data release presents geologic map data for the surficial geology of the Durango 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle and adjacent areas along the northern boundary of the quadrangle. The map area lies within two physiographic provinces of Fenneman (1928): the Southern Rocky Mountains province, and the Colorado Plateau province, Navajo section. Geologic mapping is mostly compiled from published geologic map data sources ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000 scale, with limited new interpretive contributions. Gaps in map compilation are related to a lack of published geologic mapping, and not necessarily a lack of surficial deposits. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the National Park Service, Yellowstone Center for Resources, as part of work for the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, has compiled a shapefile map of thermal areas and thermal water bodies in Yellowstone National Park. A thermal area is a continuous, or nearly continuous, geologic unit that contains one or more thermal features (e.g., hot springs, mud pots, or fumaroles); hydrothermally altered rocks and/or hydrothermal mineral deposits; heated ground and/or geothermal gas emissions; and is generally barren of vegetation or has stressed / dying vegetation. There are more than 10,000 thermal features in Yellowstone, most of which are clustered together into about 120...

These data were used to examine grammatical structures and patterns within a set of geospatial glossary definitions. Objectives of our study were to analyze the semantic structure of input definitions, use this information to build triple structures of RDF graph data, upload our lexicon to a knowledge graph software, and perform SPARQL queries on the data. Upon completion of this study, SPARQL queries were proven to effectively convey graph triples which displayed semantic significance. These data represent and characterize the lexicon of our input text which are used to form graph triples. These data were collected in 2024 by passing text through multiple Python programs utilizing spaCy (a natural language processing...

Area estimates of land cover and land cover change are often based on reference class labels determined by analysts interpreting satellite imagery and aerial photography. Different interpreters may assign different reference class labels to the same sample unit. This dataset include land cover attributes for the year 2000 assigned by 7 image analysts, working independently of each other, to a set of 300 sample locations from a region of the Pacific Northwest of the United States. This data was used in an evaluation of the impact of interpreter variability on variance estimation.

Semi-arid urban environments are undergoing an increase in air temperatures, both in average temperatures and in the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events. Within cities, different varieties of urban landcovers (ULC) and their densities influence local air temperatures, either mitigating or increasing heat. Currently, understanding how various combinations of ULCs influence air temperature at the block to neighborhood scale is limited due to the complexities of urban energy balances at small scales. We quantified how ULC influences air temperature at 60 m resolution for day and nighttime climate normals and heatwaves, by integrating data from microclimate temperature sensor networks and high-resolution...
