Globally, groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs) are increasingly vulnerable to groundwater extraction and land use practices. Groundwater supports these ecosystems by providing inflow, which can maintain water levels, water temperature, and chemistry necessary to sustain the biodiversity that they support. Many aquatic systems receive groundwater as a portion of base flow, and in some systems (e.g., springs, seeps, fens) the connection with groundwater is significant and important to the system’s integrity and persistence. Groundwater management decisions for human use may not consider ecological effects of those actions on GDEs, which rely on groundwater to maintain ecological function. This disconnect between...

We developed and tested neural network-based models to recognize and count emigrating juvenile river herring in continuous video. Continuous video was collected from an underwater camera installed at Great Herring Pond in Bourne, Massachusetts (USA) between June and November 2017. Our algorithm extracts video frames to assess presence/absence of fish and count numbers of fish emigrating. We used extracted video frames to assess model performance. Provided datasets include information about extracted frames that were used for model assessment. This data release includes four datasets that were used to test model performance and select the best fitting model. (1) The “Model Evaluation Dataset” includes count and presence/absence...

This dataset consists of three datafiles: 1) vegetation, 2) abiotic factors, and 3) groundwater levels. Vegetation data were collected twice per month between July and September of 2019 and 2020. Data was collected by establishing 1m x 1m subplots within 12 5m-radius sampling plots distributed across the management units of Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Subplots were established to represent plot-level vegetation structure and facilitate estimates of rare plant relative abundance. The abiotic factors dataset includes observations of surface soil moisture, salinity, groundwater quality data, and rare plant presence taken weekly between March – October 2019 and May – October 2020 at each established plot within...

Dataset containing information for white-tailed deer samples from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and New York, genotyped for 11 microsatellites markers. Marker OvirQ should not be used as it presents alleles inconsistent with reported pattern, with some alleles separated by only 1 base pair and inconsistent between runs. Projected coordinates representing sampling location are in a user-defined CRS, similar to USA Contiguous Albers Equal Area Conic: "+proj=aea +lat_1=29.3 +lat_2=45.3 +lat_0=23 +lon_0=-96 +x_0=0 +y_0=0 +ellps=GRS80 +towgs84=0,0,0,0,0,0,0 +units=m +no_defs".
These data are the collection of generalized linear mixed models run for AIC comparison of the pre- and post-White-nose Syndrome bat mist-net captures and percent juveniles in capture by year, time since White-nose Syndrome at collection set, U.S Fish and Wildlife Service designated geographic units, states or NABAT grid cell, collection site mean temperature, collection site temperature range and collection site elevation. Models are inclusive of data from 1999-2019 for the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) and the tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus).

The three datasets were used in a model estimating the current and future persistence of 222 populations of southern hognose snakes, as estimated as part of the USFWS Species Status Assessment. Because these datasets contain information about sensitive species at risk of overcollection and harassment, they do not contain any spatial identifying information. The "HESIM_locs" dataset contains a list of southern hognose snake occurrence records with associated year of observation and population ID. The "SEsnakes_locs" dataset contains a list of non-target snake species occurrence records with associated year of observation and population ID. The "HESIM_pops_all" dataset contains a list of southern hognose snake populations...

This volume's release consists of 64642 media files captured by autonomous wildlife monitoring devices under the project, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The attached files listed below include several CSV files that provide information about the data release. The file, "media.csv" provides the metadata about the media, such as filename and date/time of capture. The actual media files are housed within folders under the volume's "child items" as compressed files. A critical CSV file is "dictionary.csv", which describes each CSV file, including field names, data types, descriptions, and the relationship of each field to fields other CSV files. Some of the media files may have been "tagged" or "annotated"...

Study attributes and summary results of fish responses to restoration extracted from systematic review of studies published between 2010 and 2020. Data were used in meta-analysis as part of the publication "Are river restoration projects designed and evaluated to effectively address current stressors to inland fish and fisheries?" by Rogosch et al. Each row is data extracted from a study with comparative design (i.e. Before-After or Control-Impact) and sufficient information to be analyzed in a quantitative meta-analysis. Study attributes include the type of restoration measure, species of interest, target age group of species, control and treatment descriptors, years of monitoring before and after restoration,...

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy that was first detected in captive cervids in Colorado, United States (US) in 1967, but has since spread into free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations across the US and Canada. In some areas, the disease is considered endemic in wild deer populations, and governmental wildlife agencies have employed epidemiological models to understand long-term environmental risk. However, continued rapid spread of CWD into new regions of the continent has underscored the need for extension of these models into broader tools applicable for wide use by wildlife agencies. Additionally, efforts to semi-automate models will facilitate...

This dataset includes XY coordinates and species and behavioral observations of birds detected in aerial imagery captured over coastal islands along Maine's coast during 30 May. - 3 June 2019. The Partenavia P.68 Observer plane flew over 268 islands within the Gulf of Maine (GOM). The plane flew at an altitude of 310 m above ground level and was equipped with a PhaseOne iXU-RS1000 (100 megapixel) multispectral camera and 70 mm lens to capture 4-band (red, green, blue, (RGB) and near-infrared (NIR) light) imagery with a ground sampling distance of 2 cm/px. Timing for the aerial image collection was selected to reflect peak nesting periods for the focal species (Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Double-crested...

The potential introduction of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, into North American bat populations is of interest to wildlife managers due to recent declines of several species. Populations of little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) have collapsed due to white-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease caused by the introduction and spread of the fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd). Throughout much of the United States and southern Canada, large colonies of the species routinely established diurnal roosts in anthropogenic structures creating the potential for direct human contact and cross-species disease transmission. Given recent declines and the potential for further disease impacts,...

Pulsed subsidy events create ephemeral fluxes of hyper-abundant resources that can shape annual patterns of consumption and growth for recipient consumers. However, environmental conditions strongly affect local resource availability for much of the year, and can heavily impact consumer foraging and growth patterns prior to pulsed subsidy events. Thus, a consumer’s capacity to exploit pulse subsidy resources may be influenced by antecedent environmental conditions, but this has rarely been shown in nature and is unknown in aquatic ecosystems. We sampled fish at a high frequency (daily - weekly measurements) to examine the importance of hydrologic variation and a salmon pulse subsidy on the foraging patterns of two...
