The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Soil Sample Archive is a database of information describing soil and sediment samples collected in support of USGS science. Samples in the archive have been registered with International Generic Sample Numbers, relabeled with bar-coded sample labels, and repacked in containers for long-term preservation. Details of sample collection location, collection date, associated datasets, mass of remaining sample, storage locations, and other relevant information are tabulated here so that interested parties may identify associated datasets and search, sort, and gain access to archived samples.

The Core Research Center (CRC) was established in 1974 by the USGS to preserve valuable samples of the Earth’s subsurface for use by scientists and educators representing government, industry, and academia. The CRC collections include full-diameter rock cores, slabbed cores (cut in half longitudinally), well cuttings, thin sections, and associated analytical data. A majority of the material was donated to the CRC by private industrial companies, although some cores and cuttings were collected by the USGS and other government agencies. Rock cores were collected from roughly 9,500 drilled borehole locations representing approximately 610,000 meters (2 million feet) of subsurface strata in 35 states. Many of the boreholes...
Authorized by Congress in 1879, the US Geological Survey (USGS) Library is recognized as one of the world’s largest Earth and natural science libraries, providing services, collections, and expertise that are essential to the USGS mission and the global geoscience community. The USGS Library is a multisite, centralized library, providing bureau-wide access to scholarly journals and research support services to USGS employees around the nation. This collection contains 2,456 botanical specimens. The majority of the specimens were collected from Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Idaho, and Alaska in the 1950s through 1970s. Dr. H. T. Shacklette was the major curator and contributor during that time. The collection was transferred to the USGS from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in 1996 when the unit that would become the Biological Resources Division became part of the USGS. The collection was accessioned as USGS museum property in 2005. It is housed at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History Herbarium, where it is integrated with the rest of the Herbarium's collection. The specimens are curated, and their use is managed, by...

The U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) facility for storing, curating, and studying meteoric ice cores recovered from the glaciated regions of the world; mostly from Antarctica and Greenland. The NICL is funded by the NSF Division of Polar Programs and operated by the USGS; and the NICL’s science operations are managed by the University of New Hampshire. NICL provides scientists with the capability to conduct examinations and measurements on ice cores, and it preserves the integrity of these ice cores in a long-term repository for future investigations. The NICL was established in 1993 and is located at the Denver Federal Center, in Denver, Colorado. The NICL’s primary...
This collection consists of eastern screech owls that were hatched at the Eastern Ecological Science Center (EESC) for research purposes. They are no longer needed for USGS research purposes, so they have been transferred to the Goshawk Society. All of the owls have lived their lives in captivity and cannot be released to the wild. They are full winged, captive bred, and parent-reared, so they are not habituated to people other than brief contact for feeding. There are 14 female owls and 22 male owls in the collection, with ages ranging from hatch year 2006 to 2021. The owls were transfered to the Goshawk Society in two groups. The first group consisted of 8 males, ages of hatch year 2010, 2011, and six 2021, with...
These are scientific collections of the USGS Volcano Science Center. The Volcano Science Center is the primary center serving the mission of the USGS Volcano Hazards Program — to enhance public safety and minimize social and economic disruption from volcanic unrest and eruption. The center is home to the five US volcano observatories with offices in Anchorage, Alaska; Menlo Park and Mountain View, California; Vancouver, Washington; and Hilo, Hawaii. Volcano monitoring and research conducted at five U.S. volcano observatories advances our understanding of active volcanism and its impacts, and enables the USGS Volcano Hazards Program to provide information about and warnings of volcanic activity in the United States....

Since its inception in 1879, the USGS has collected and preserved geoscience data and sample collections, which include millions of paleobiological specimens stored in USGS facilities and at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington, D.C. As one of the largest paleontological collections in the world, the USGS paleontology collection is invaluable, as many specimens may no longer be collected due to high field collection costs or inaccessibility to sampling sites, which have been restricted, urbanized, or modified via landscape processes. The USGS Denver Paleontology Collection includes ~1.2 million specimens stored in 1000 Smithsonian museum cases. The primary collections...
