Water surface elevations within seven Willamette River off-channel features (OCF; alcoves and side channels) were measured using submerged pressure transducers. Transducers were installed from late May through mid-October, 2016, when discharge of the Willamette River was between approximately 5,500 and 45,000 cubic feet per second at Salem, Oregon (USGS gage 14191000) and 3,500 to 17,500 cubic feet per second at Harrisburg, Oregon (USGS gage 14166000). Pressure transducer sensor depth was measured at all seven sites. For five of the sites, pressure transducer sensor depths were converted to water surface elevations by surveying the water surface at each transducer with a real-time kinematic global positioning system...

Physical and chemical changes affect the biota within urban streams at varying scales ranging from individual organisms to populations and communities creating complex interactions that present challenges for characterizing and monitoring the impact on species utilizing these freshwater habitats. Salmonids, specifically cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), extensively utilize small stream habitats influenced by a changing urban landscape. This study used a comprehensive fish health assessment concurrent with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Pacific Northwest Stream Quality Assessment in 2015 to quantifiy impacts from disease in juvenile coho and cutthroat salmon, impacts to...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated on monitoring the chloride flux in the major rivers of Yellowstone National Park by periodically sampling the rivers and analyzing chloride concentrations in discrete water samples since the 1970's. However, restrictions of winter travel, great distances between sites, and sampling and analytical costs have limited collection to approximately 28 samples per site annually. Electrical conductivity data can be used as a proxy for chloride concentrations in many of the major rivers of Yellowstone National Park. Electrical conductivity is a measure of the ability of water to pass an electrical current, and it is affected by the presence...

This dataset is comprised of water quality data and benthic macroinvertebrate data collected from basins in Colorado, USA, and Finland. The data includes ancillary water quality characteristics but also a suite of trace metals observed at each site. Also included are modeled outputs that characterize the bioavailability of each trace metal to a biotic ligand. These data were used to explore the importance of metal toxicity and pH as stressors on benthic macroinvertebrates characterized as the number of unique Ephemeroptera + Plecoptera + Trichoptera genera observed at each site. An interpretive summary of the work follows. One of the primary goals of biological assessment of rivers is to identify whether contaminants...

From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

This dataset represents the network-adjusted results of relative- and absolute-gravity surveys. Relative-gravity surveys were carried out using a Zero Length Spring, Inc. Burris relative-gravity meter. The effect of solid Earth tides and ocean loading were removed from the data. Instrument drift was removed by evaluating gravity change during repeated measurements at one or more base stations. Absolute-gravity surveys were carried out using a Micro-g LaCoste, Inc. A-10 absolute-gravity meter. Vertical gradients between the different measuring heights of the absolute- and relative-gravity meters were measured using a relative-gravity meter and tripod, and used to correlate the measurements between the two instruments....

Nonstationary streamflow due to environmental and human-induced causes can affect water quality over time, yet these effects are poorly accounted for in water-quality trend models. This data release provides instream water-quality trends and estimates of two components of change, for sites across the Nation previously presented in Oelsner et al. (2017). We used previously calibrated Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge, and Season (WRTDS) models published in De Cicco et al. (2017) to estimate instream water-quality trends and associated uncertainties with the generalized flow normalization procedure available in EGRET version 3.0 (Hirsch et al., 2018a) and EGRETci version 2.0 (Hirsch et al., 2018b). The procedure...

Water samples were collected from six cave locations where Actinobacterial mats appeared to be plentiful. Community-level physiological capabilities were evaluated using Biolog-Ecolog plates inoculated with cave water dosed with 0 or 0.10 milligrams per liter (mg/L) of erythromycin. The data were transformed into average well color development (AWCD). The transformation is done by subtracting the background color development (blank controls) and then averaging the three color readings of the same treatment on the same Biolog EcoPlate. Each EcoPlate has three replicates of 31 different substrates (potential bacterial food) that the microbial community can potentially metabolize and thereby transform a clear dye into...

Optimal hydrograph separation (OHS) is a two-component, hydrograph separation method that uses a two-parameter, recursive digital filter (RDF) constrained via chemical mass balance to estimate the base flow contribution to a stream or river (Rimmer and Hartman, 2014; Raffensperger et al., 2017). A recursive digital filter distinguishes between high-frequency and low-frequency discharge data within a hydrograph, where high-frequency data corresponds to quick flow or storms and low-frequency data corresponds to base flow. The two parameters within the RDF are alpha and beta, both are unitless. Alpha is defined as the recession constant and typically found through recession analysis. For the purposes of this data release...

This dataset contains boundary polygons from 59 wetlands, that were monitored as part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI) from Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge (SMNWR). These sites covered a range of sizes, shapes, topographic and vegetative characteristics that were deemed to be representative of wetlands within the study area. Ground-based surveys of wetland perimeters were made using a Trimble R8 Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS). Surveys generally followed the lowest extent of saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), which is a reliable indicator of the upper limits (elevation) of sustained inundation. In instances where palmetto was absent,...
