Improved Gulf Hypoxia Planning Tool: Landscape scale planning tools focus conservation priorities through a series of region-specific lenses. These tools include: CHAT; SECAS; Gulf Hypoxia Initiative - Precision Conservation Blueprint v1.5; and landscape designs developed by the Great Plains LCC and Gulf Coast Prairie LCC. Discussions with industry, agency and organizational leaders across the mid-continent suggest that the time is ripe for opening a dialogue about how to bridge the planning between the west and east to find the appropriate stakeholder-driven set of mid-continent connections for a network of lands and waters. The recipient will assist staff from multiple LCCs and other interested entities in setting...

The impacts from climate change are increasing the possibility of vulnerable coastal species and habitats crossing critical thresholds that could spur rapid and possibly irreversible changes. For species of high conservation concern, improved knowledge of quantitative thresholds could greatly improve management. To meet this need, we synthesized information pertaining to biological responses as tipping points to sea level rise (SLR) and coastal storms for 45 fish, wildlife, and plant species along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts and Caribbean through a literature review and expert elicitation. Although these species were selected based on their ecological, economic, and cultural importance, just over half (56%,...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. It represents a relative ranking of HUC12 watersheds according to the quantity and quality of habitat as described in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Watersheds (HUC12) were ranked by calculating the length-weighted average Management Opportunity scores within them. Because the 3 actions are identical for Med/Low-gradient Streams & Rivers of the coastal plains and Upland Streams & Rivers, (and because some watersheds contain both system types), we considered these systems simultaneously and calculated only...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Protection Opportunity action map for the Grasslands habitat system ranks pixels (250-m) based primarily on the Grasslands Condition Index such that unprotected sites within healthy landscapes are ranked higher than those in very fragmented landscapes. Ranks are increased by information on existing partner interest (i.e. stated priority areas), elevated risk of change by 2060, and predicted occupancy of a majority of species identified in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Areas ranked as high restoration...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Condition Index ranks pixels (250-m) according to how well they meet the Desired State for the Upland Hardwoods (Forest) habitat system, which is described qualitatively and quantitatively in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Higher values indicate sites closer to the Desired State. Value of 1 indicates areas appropriate for restoration but currently under an alternative land use (i.e. potential habitat). Please see PDF file in the Upland Hardwoods (Forest) folder in the Blueprint Gallery at https://gcpolcc.databasin.org/...

Description of condition index value scores for estuarine tidal marsh along and within 10 km of the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. A series of raster calculations were used in a dichotomous decision-based framework to compile a per-pixel draft condition index value at a 10 m resolution for GCPO estuarine tidal marsh based on the number of configuration and condition endpoints met within each marsh pixel. Pixels not identified as a estuarine marsh but that were identified as having the potential to be marsh were given a score of 1, provided the pixels were not classified as developed. Potential estuarine tidal marsh pixels were derived from a combination of potential estuarine tidal marsh classes in the Landfire...

The Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS) is a shared, long-term vision for lands and waters that sustain fish and wildlife populations and improve human quality of life across the southeastern United States and Caribbean. SECAS provides regional focus for investments across organizations, disciplines, and partnerships on shared and proactive goals. The unique role of SECAS is to identify and support the steps necessary to regionally plan, implement, and evaluate actions that sustain habitat, mitigate threats, and adapt to desired conditions. As a result, SECAS unifies the delivery of conservation activities and supports innovation that can be applied across the region. Funding for this project supports...

In order to make the framework as useful as possible for monarch conservation planning efforts, the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie and Big Rivers Landscape Conservation Cooperative sponsored a practitioners workshop and bringing together local urban conservation leaders and communities engaged in urban monarch conservation efforts to help guide the final products for this project. Participants are expected to be technical expertise in community engagement and/or geospatial modeling/mapping. The objectives of the meeting are to:1. Obtain feedback and evaluation of the Urban Monarch LCD geospatial models for Chicago, Minneapolis-St.Paul, Austin, and Kansas City and check for replicability in other cities2. Share information...

Watersheds (HUC12) were ranked by the presence, quantity and quality of the Forested Wetland habitat system (includes bottomland hardwoods, swamps and wet riparian forests) within the 5 sub-geographies of the GCPO LCC region. Once ranked, watersheds were classified (e.g., “Top 10%”) based on the proportion of the total Forested Wetland area (current + potential)...

Average tree diameter (dbh) is also an important forest condition for some species requiring large trees and subsequent tree cavities for denning/nesting/roosting sites. The GCPO LCC ISA targets diameter of upland hardwood forest and woodland trees to be ≥14” dbh. The standardized Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) national program, which collects data using standardized field protocols across counties in every state annually, may be the only landscape-scale data source feasible to investigate average tree diameter in the absence of other large-scale data sources in the GCPO geography. We used FIA-imputed data on average tree diameter (DBH, inches) (USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center [USFS],...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Management Opportunity action map for the Open Pine habitat system ranks pixels (250-m) for 3 general classes of conservation actions. Maintenance pixels (values 7-9) are currently estimated to meet the site condition Endpoints in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Enhancement pixels (values 4-6) are those that are currently classified as Open Pine but do not meet the site condition Endpoints in the Science Agenda. Restoration pixels (values 1-3) are those that are currently in a different land use but...

Basal area is a measure of the cross-sectional area of trees calculated by multiplying the foresters’ constant (0.005454) by the squared diameter of each tree to determine a measure of tree area (ft2 or m2) per unit area (acre or ha). Similar to an assessment of forest canopy cover, basal area provides a measure of horizontal structure, and is closely associated with measures of vertical structure. When assessing condition of upland hardwood woodland and forest systems, the GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda targets a large proportion of the basal area in those systems to be composed of oak and hickory species. This endpoint targets >90% of basal area as oak and hickory for upland hardwood woodland systems and >70%...
