This GeoPackage contains the analysis strata ("YKG_AnalysisStrata") used in calculating population indices for geese, swans, and cranes. This layer was created from the file ("YKD_DesignStrata") when the existing rotating panel design was developed in 1999. This layer was originally created as an ArcInfo coverage, saved to a shapefile, and imported to SQLite Database format.

Expanded population indices of ducks and loons (YKD) and geese and swans (YKG) for the USFWS Region Migratory Bird Management Alaska Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Aerial Survey study area in an expanded csv format. The survey consists of low-level aerial observations of waterfowl on a stratified strip transect design. The resulting data frame is several indices combined over observers (or single observer in years where estimates were not combined) and calculated using a standard ratio estimator. These data are output from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial.

The Spectacled Recovery Plan identified annual nesting surveys as the primary method to assess recovery status for Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) subpopulation. In addition to documenting population status for spectacled eiders, the survey provides annual information on egg production, nesting effort, phenology, and habitat use for three other focal species including cackling geese, emperor geese, and greater white-fronted geese. Numbers of nests of the four species are stable or increasing in the short-term (2007-2016) and long-term (1985-2016). In 2016, the estimated number of spectacled eider nests (9,464) was the second highest in the history of the survey, but nest success was poor and clutch size very...

This R code uses the nest card data (“Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”), cumulative observer experience data (“cumnest.csv”), and the output from the detection model to produce nest population estimates for focal species or species groups. Model results used are the the maximum likelihood estimates and covariance matrix from Program Mark for “model 7” or from a Bayesian posterior distribution based on a generalized linear mixed model for detection with random effects for plot, year, and crew. Results from “model 7” are produced only to provide population estimates based on legacy methods as reported in past reports. For final estimates, results from the Bayesian posterior should be used. Result from either model cannot...

The 25,000 km of shoreline in southeast Alaska was surveyed for waterbirds, seals, sea lions, and sea otters by fixed-wing aircraft in summer and winter during the period 1997 to 2002. All shoreline was surveyed, including rocks and small islets. The transect width was 400 meters. Exceptions were made for scoters and sea otters, which were recorded if they were within visual sight of the plane regardless of their distance from shore. A ground/boat survey double-sampled 20% of the summer habitat and 5% of the winter habitat to adjust and enhance the air survey. Complete shoreline coverage provided precise estimates for the abundant waterbird species. Meaningful population values could be generated for very specific...

The daily boat tracks of the 1997-2001 summer skiff-based double-sampling surveys were recorded to an onboard computer using the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired). The tracks were recorded by capturing the skiff’s location from a GPS every five seconds as long as the software was running. The software was started at some time between the boat’s engine start and the start of the survey, and was shut down at some time between the end of the survey and engine shut-down. The tracks may thus include the boat’s travel to and from the home base. Note that the following boat tracks are missing: all 1997 tracks; one track on 08/12/1998; one track on 08/08/2001; one track on 08/09/2001.

This collection of reports are summaries of annual aerial surveys of molting geeze conducted near Teshekpuk Lake beginning in 2003. Annual reports completed for surveys conducted prior to 2003 are not in digital format. To access to these, please contact Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region Waterfowl Department (USFWS) directly. Because not all reports were completed within the same year as the corresponding aerial surveys, file naming format for each report was standardized to: [YYYY] _ [author] _ [(coauthor)] _ briefDescription. All markdown code used to produce reports starting in 2016 can be found here and is also located on the Alaska Regional Data Repository (GitHub_Annual_Report_Code folder).

There are four kinds of observers that will be examining photos for birds, and four separate datasheets will contain results from these observers for each survey. The first observer, ‘PRI’ = the primary observer, looks at all photos taken and records bird presence/absence. The ‘SEC’ = the secondary observer, speciates the birds found by the primary observer, and counts the Steller’s eiders. The ‘TER’ = the tertiary observer, reviews the speciation and/or counts of the secondary observer as a check. The ‘ERR’ = the error rate observer, independently records bird presence/absence in a subset (10%) of the photos that the primary observer viewed as a check on the PRI accuracy. When all are complete, they are combined...

This is a collection of datasets that are comprised final MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial survey data. Using R code produced by Brad Shults (files ending in .Rmd found in ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’), these data were produced from the raw survey data (‘raw_data’); some quality control was completed using this GitHub R code, though some columns of these datasets still contain errors and these data are not tidy. However, these data are used to produce figures and tables in annual reports so no further tidying or quality control was conducted for these data. Additional details can be found in entity and domain data dictionary definitions.

This dataset was created by Heather Wilson and sent to Julian Fischer on 6/29/21 and forwarded by him to Maggie Harings on 7/1/21. Heather created this document in order to track general survey details including pilot names, observer names, aircraft types used during each survey, and survey notes for the MBM-AK TLSA molting goose surveys. This document has not been tidied and it is unclear whether is has been put through a quality control process. In addition, Heather made several attempts to track down missing information in this document for survey years 1982-1999 but was unsuccessful. Therefore, this document is incomplete and should be treated as such. For additional information regarding this document, please...

This document is a report on a project for a Masters student thesis to understand distance sampling to estimate eider and goose nest density. The abstract from the report is:The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service currently conducts annual surveys to estimate bird nest abundanceon the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska. The current method involves intensive searching on large plots withthe goal of finding every nest on the plot. Distance sampling is a well-established transect-based methodto estimate density or abundance that accounts for imperfect detection of objects. It relies on estimatingthe probability of detecting an object given its distance from the transect line, or the detection function.Simulations were done using...

Annual assessment of nesting populations of geese on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) provides information for biologists, participants in cooperative goose management plans, and Pacific Flyway technical committees. A ground-based sampling procedure has been used since 1986 to estimate the number of total nests, active nests, and eggs for cackling geese, emperor geese, greater white-fronted geese, and spectacled eiders. Annual information on the size of the nesting population and potential number of young produced contributes long term data needed to understand goose and eider population ecology and better manage these species. The survey has been the primary method of measuring recovery status for the western population...

This dataset, SummerSimplified.csv, contains the bird and marine mammal data collected during the 1997-2002 aerial summer Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey, edited for quality-control (QC) purposes. During the QC process, observations of the same species that were less than 0.3 nautical miles apart were merged. Species codes of certain species were changed to a group code, e.g., scoter-specific species (BLSC, SUSC, WWSC) to SCOT. Species that were considered inadequately surveyed due to detection issues or inappropriateness of the survey design were removed.
