Water used for hydraulic fracturing treatments in and near the Williston Basin during 2000-2015, was estimated using data reported in IHS Markit (TM) (2016). Hydraulic fracturing treatment data from IHS Markit (TM) (2016) may include volumes in a variety of measurement units, and they may include multiple treatments per well. All listed treatments within the study area were converted to gallons and summed on a per-well basis, discounting any treatments for which the specified measurement units were unclear (for example, “sacks”, or “feet”), which were minor. Of 3,734,380 treatments listed within the study area during the timeframe of interest, 0.7% (26,373 records) were not included. For each well, the date listed...

This dataset was created to document the natural occurrence of helium and carbon dioxide throughout the United States. This dataset is sourced primarily from publicly available data from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Federal Helium Program and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The Federal Helium Program, which originally began in 1925 under the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has analyzed thousands of gas samples during its history. These analyses were reported in several publications (Moore and Sigler, 1987; Hamak and Gage, 1992; Hamak and Sigler, 1991, 1993; Sigler, 1994; Hamak and Driskill, 1996; Gage and Driskill, 1998, 2003, 2005; Driskill, 2008), and additional unpublished data residing in an internal BLM...

This child page contains the IHS Markit Water Treatment data for the Permian Basin, New Mexico and Texas, 2000-2019, for use as input data for the model associated with the Scientific Investigations Report "Estimates of Water Use Associated with Continuous Oil and Gas Development in the Permian Basin, Texas and New Mexico, 2010–2019" (Valder and others, 2021). All data points that met the filtering criteria as described in the Data Processing <procdesc> steps were retained in the data release. Further filtering of data points to remove unrealistic values was done prior to modeling. The model was used to estimate water use associated with continuous oil and gas development in the Permian Basin, Texas and New Mexico,...

Hydraulic fracturing is presently the primary stimulation technique for oil and gas production in low-permeability, unconventional reservoirs. Comprehensive, published, and publicly available information regarding the extent, location, and character of hydraulic fracturing in the United States is scarce. This national spatial and temporal analysis of data on nearly 1 million hydraulically fractured wells and 1.8 million fracturing treatment records from 1947 through 2010 (aggregated in Data Series 868) is used to identify hydraulic fracturing trends in drilling methods and use of proppants, treatment fluids, additives, and water in the United States. These trends are compared to the literature in an effort to establish...

Heightened concern regarding the potential effects of unconventional oil and gas development on regional water quality has emerged, but the few studies on this topic are limited in geographic scope. Here we evaluate the potential utility of national and publicly available water-quality data sets for addressing questions regarding unconventional oil and gas development. We used existing U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data sets to increase understanding of the spatial distribution of unconventional oil and gas development in the U.S. and broadly assess surface water quality trends in these areas. Based on sample size limitations, we were able to estimate trends in specific conductance...

One of the largest conventional oil reservoirs in the United States, the Permian Basin, is becoming one of the world’s largest continuous oil and gas producing reservoirs. Continuous, or horizontal well drilling techniques extract oil and gas by directionally drilling and hydraulically fracturing the surrounding reservoir rock. The continuous extraction of oil and gas using hydraulic fracturing requires large volumes of water, and estimates of the total water volume used in the Continuous Oil and Gas (COG) extraction technique, requires a comprehensive assessment to determine the amount of water needed to extract reservoir resources. This data release contains the input and output files utilized for the assessment...

The input form provides a record of the complete input values required for the quantitative assessment of water and proppant associated with oil and gas production for the continuous oil and gas resource in a geologically defined Assessment Unit, and the same form template is used for all such assessments. Each USGS water and proppant assessment builds from a USGS petroleum assessment that provides the geologic foundation for the water and proppant assessment. Assessment units are defined in the course of conducting the petroleum assessment.

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed a probabilistic assessment of the volume of technically recoverable oil resources available if current carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technologies were applied in amenable oil reservoirs underlying the onshore and State waters area of the conterminous United States. The assessment also includes estimates of the magnitude of CO2 stored (retained) resulting from CO2-EOR activities. The USGS assessment team evaluated 3524 oil reservoirs that were miscible to injected CO2. The assessed reservoirs are located in 185 previously defined USGS plays in 33 petroleum provinces (or basins) of 7 national regions. All candidate reservoir data, except 12 reservoirs...

Comprehensive, published, and publicly available data regarding the extent, location, and character of hydraulic fracturing in the United States are scarce. The objective of this data series is to publish data related to hydraulic fracturing in the public domain. The spreadsheets released with this data series contain derivative datasets aggregated temporally and spatially from the commercial and proprietary IHS database of U.S. oil and gas production and well data (IHS Energy, 2011). These datasets, served in 21 spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) format, outline the geographical distributions of hydraulic fracturing treatments and associated wells (including well drill-hole directions) as well as water volumes,...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides data to estimate water use associated with continuous oil and gas development in the Williston Basin during 1980-2017. Data included: Data records from the national hydraulic fracturing chemical registry, FracFocus, including the state, county, latitude and longitude of each well, and the year and volume of water used for hydraulic fracturing for the years 2010-2017 in Montana and North Dakota. IHS Markit (TM) data reported in 2018 including the number of wells used for hydraulic fracturing treatments; the volume of oil, gas and water produced; well counts for produced oil, gas, and water. Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (MTDNRC)...
Hydraulic fracturing is a treatment method used to stimulate production from oil and gas wells. Hydraulic fracturing involves injection of treatment fluids mixed with propping agents under high pressure into perforated portions of the wellbore. This method causes the reservoir rocks to fracture and the hydraulic fracturing fluids and propping agents to enter the fractures. Subsequently, the injected propping agents remain in the fractures while the oil, gas and(or) water flows back to the well head at the surface. This dataset is a compilation of information on the types and amounts of treatment fluids applied to oil and gas onshore wells that were hydraulically fractured in the United States from 2015 through 2019....

This dataset provides national scale location information for known, publicly available, data on helium gas concentrations, reported in mol%. The dataset was created as part of the effort by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to conduct an assessment of helium resources in accordance with the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013, Public Law 113-40. The data were collected from the USGS Energy Geochemistry Database, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) databases, State geological survey databases, and a thorough review of the published literature. This dataset represents an aggregation of multiple datasets into one unified, cohesive system that has a number of attributes for use in a resource assessment and for dissemination...
