The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Bighorn Basin Province is located in Wyoming and south central Montana. The main population centers within the study area are Cody and Thermopolis, Wyoming. The main highways, I-70 and I-90, generally traverse the area from north to south. The Bighorn River and its tributaries drain the area. The province boundary was drawn...

This ArcView shapefile contains a polygon representation of the northern boundary of the Powder River Basin (Montana). This theme was created specifically for the National Coal Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.

This shapefile includes polygons that describe U.S. Geological Survey delineated Total Petroleum Systems of northern Afghanistan. Each petroleum system is defined as a mappable entity encompassing genetically related petroleum that occurs in seeps, shows and accumulations (discovered and undiscovered) that have been generated by a pod, or by closely related pods, of mature source rock, together with the essential mappable geologic elements (source, reservoir, seal and overburden rocks) that control fundamental processes of generation, migration, entrapment and preservation of petroleum. Total petroleum systems are described by U.S. Geological Survey research scientists on the basis of exploration and production...

This is a shapefile and unioned polygon ownership coverage used to calculate coal resources of the A through D coal zones, Yampa coal field, northwestern Colorado. Polygons that have been combined include counties, 7.5' quadrangles, townships, surface and coal ownership. This ownership coverage was clipped by the largest resource boundary polygon--that of the A coal zone.
This dataset is a polygon coverage of the resource areas of the Lower Kittanning coal zone. This dataset is the digital compilation of geologic and resource maps provided mostly by State geologic surveys and depicts the projected area of occurrence of the Lower Kittanning coal bed. The Lower Kittanning coal bed is in Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and western Maryland and is an important economic coal bed in the northern part of the Appalachian Basin. It is of additional importance because it is one of the coal beds that has potential for coalbed methane development within the Allegheny Group throughout most of the Appalachian foreland basin in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland. This file...

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

The sand percent contours were produced by the Louisiana Geological Survey and were digitized from Chapter 11, Cenozoic, in The Gulf of Mexico Basin, Volume J, The Geology of North America (1991). The data are provided in three shapefiles--one for each stage (Lower, Middle and Upper) of the Miocene series. These datasets contain basic data and interpretations developed and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey's Framework Studies and Assessment of the Gulf Coast Project. Other major sources of data include publicly available information from state agencies as well as publications of the U.S. Geological Survey and other scientific organizations. In cases where company proprietary data were used to produce various...

For each of the four Miocene sequences, polygons representing producing areas within fields were created by constructing a grid of ¼ sq. mi. cells and proximal polygons centered on all producing wells and then combining and merging the adjacent polygons having the same value for field name. Although the polygons are based on the producing wells only, they may also include some dry holes. The producing intervals were determined by comparing the depth of production to the structure contours (see metadata for the structure contours). The data are provided in four shapefiles--one for each Miocene sequence (Lower 1, Lower 2, Middle and Upper). These datasets contain basic data and interpretations developed and compiled...

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the U.S. Cells were...
