Its sole purpose is allow the users to perform theme on theme queries. This theme was created specifically for the National Coal Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.
This ArcView shapefile contains a polygon representation of numerous themes associated with the Johnson-107 coal zone in the South Carbon coalfield, Carbon Basin, Wyoming. The purpose of this shapefile is to allow the user to perform multiple theme queries. This dataset is a polygon coverage of counties limited to the extent of the Upper Freeport coal bed resource areas and attributed with remaining resources (millions of short tons) in aggregated reporting categories as described in USGS Circular 891. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C.

The depth to top of the Wilcox Group is contoured from location and top information derived from the Petroleum Information (PI) Wells database. The depth to Wilcox map represents the tops found in the database with the addition of surface geology from USGS maps and field data. The veracity of the PI Wells database is being checked by comparison to published cross sections and geologic maps. Interpretation of the depth to Wilcox and apparent thickness maps along with published measured sections and cross sections indicates that portions of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama contain broad areas where a 20 to 40 foot net thickness of lignite and coal occur at shallow depths. The thicker coal zones are attributed...

This isopach map shows the thickness of the interval from the top of the Travis Peak or Hosston Formations to the top of the Cotton Valley Group. The map was produced by first subtracting the values of the top of the Travis Peak or Hosston from those of the top of the Cotton Valley Group. This resulted in a data set of 8,585 values for which locations were available. After deleting the wells with obvious data problems, a total of 8414 wells were used to generate the map. The data are provided as both lines and polygons, and the proprietary wells that penetrate this interval are graphically displayed as quarter-mile cells. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well...
The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...
Cell maps for each Miocene and Plio-Pleistocene oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and...
This isopach map shows the thickness of the interval from the top of the Cotton Valley Group to the top of the Smackover Formation. It was necessary to contour this expanded interval, instead of just the upper part of the Cotton Valley Group, because of the limited availability of data. Ideally, just the part of the Cotton Valley Group above the Bossier Shale would have been contoured, but there are a limited number of Bossier picks in the database, and many of the Bossier picks are not at a consistent stratigraphic break (J.L. Ridgley, oral commun., 2002). Data for units below the Bossier, such as the Haynesville or Buckner Formations, are also limited on a regional basis. The Smackover Formation is the first unit...
Final unioned polygon coverages and shapefiles used to calculate coal resources of the A through G coal zones, Danforth Hills coal field, northwestern Colorado. Danafing was used for the A coal zone; Danbfing was used for the B coal zone; etc. Polygons that make up the final unioned polygons include counties, 7.5' quadrangles, townships, surface and coal ownership, lease boundaries, overburden, and coal thickness categories. The final coverages were clipped to the resource areas for each coal zone, which are described in the metadata files for the *_bnd coverages.

The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

South America is part of Region 6 (Central and South America) for the World Energy Assessment. The geologic map of South America was digitized so that we could use the geology as a general guide to draw the boundaries of the geologic provinces of South America.

The clinker theme represents a digital polygon coverage showing areas where clinker is present. Clinker forms from the natural burning of coal beds in outcrop, and consists of baked (melted) and fused rocks that are commonly red or red-brown in color. In this coverage, only clinker formed by the burning of the Knobloch coal bed is represented. Additionally, clinker of the Knobloch coal bed that is present within the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation is not shown. This theme was created specifically for the National Coal Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.
This coverage includes arcs, polygons, and polygon labels that describe the undiscovered natural gas resources assessment unit boundaries of the Bangladesh. This resource assessment was completed jointly by U.S. Geological Survey and Petrobangla.

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Wyoming Thrust Belt Province is located in southeastern Idaho, north central Utah, and southwestern Wyoming, encompassing all or parts of Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Bonneville, Caribou, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Teton Counties in Idaho and all or parts of Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, Summit, and...
