The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

The clinker theme represents a digital polygon coverage showing areas where clinker is present. Clinker forms from the natural burning of coal beds in outcrop, and consists of baked (melted) and fused rocks that are commonly red or red-brown in color. In this coverage, only clinker formed by the burning of the Knobloch coal bed is represented. Additionally, clinker of the Knobloch coal bed that is present within the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation is not shown. This theme was created specifically for the National Coal Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.
The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Wyoming Thrust Belt Province is located in southeastern Idaho, north central Utah, and southwestern Wyoming, encompassing all or parts of Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Bonneville, Caribou, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Teton Counties in Idaho and all or parts of Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, Summit, and...

This ArcView shapefile contains a polygon representation of the spatial query layer for the Point of Rocks-Black Butte coalfield, Greater Green River Basin, Wyoming. The purpose of this shapefile is to allow the user to perform multiple theme queries. This shapefile was created specifically for the National Coal Resource Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the U.S. Cells were...
The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of province is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. This dataset is a compilation of data that has been studied and published separately, and in some cases adjacent provinces do not share a common boundary. As a consequence, there are numerous gaps and overlaps in this layer.

The structure contours were created using biostratigraphic data in the Paleo-Data, Inc., Tenroc Regional Geologic Database. The depths of the microfossil locations were associated with the wells data provided by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources. Because of the proprietary nature of the Tenroc database, no actual data can be shown and only those data points contained in the Louisiana State wells database are included in the control points layer. Contouring was accomplished in Dynamic Graphics, Inc., EarthVision modeling software (v.5) using minimum tension gridding. Three custom programs were used to convert contour lines generated from grids in EarthVision to Arc/Info coverages and then to shapefiles....
