From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

Bathymetric and topographic data on the mainstem Nooksack River, Whatcom County, Washington were collected in the fall of 2015 as part of a study on sediment transport and channel change. Bathymetric data was collected from the river's mouth to river mile (RM) 28, near Nugent's Corner. Topographic data is available from RM 17, near the town of Lynden, to RM 37, near the confluence of the Middle Fork Nooksack. More information on these datasets is available in their respective metadata. The overlapping extents of these surveys were merged to create a seamless elevation data set of the river bed and active channel. Aerial lidar acquired in 2013 was used to fill in holes where vegetation prevented photogrammetric reconstructions...

Optimal hydrograph separation (OHS) is a two-component, hydrograph separation method that uses a two-parameter, recursive digital filter (RDF) constrained via chemical mass balance to estimate the base flow contribution to a stream or river (Rimmer and Hartman, 2014; Raffensperger et al., 2017). A recursive digital filter distinguishes between high-frequency and low-frequency discharge data within a hydrograph, where high-frequency data corresponds to quick flow or storms and low-frequency data corresponds to base flow. The two parameters within the RDF are alpha and beta, both are unitless. Alpha is defined as the recession constant and typically found through recession analysis. For the purposes of this data release...

A rich legacy of geochemical data produced since the early 1960s covers the great expanse of Alaska; careful treatment of such data may provide significant and revealing geochemical maps that may be used for landscape geochemistry, mineral resource exploration, and geoenvironmental investigations over large areas. To maximize the spatial density and extent of data coverage for statewide mapping of element distributions, we compiled and integrated analyses of more than 175,000 sediment and soil samples from three major, separate sources: the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Uranium Resource Evaluation program, and the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys geochemical databases. Various types of...

This publication provides digital flight line data for a high-resolution horizontal magnetic gradient and radiometric survey over the Ironton, Missouri area of southeast Missouri. Data were collected using a fixed wing aircraft with magnetometers mounted in the tail stinger and each wing tip pod and a fully calibrated gamma ray spectrometer. The survey operated out of the Farmington, Missouri airport during January to mid-February of 2016. The survey covers an irregularly shaped region within a 54 x 53 square-kilometer area centered on the town of Ironton, Missouri. Data were collected along north-south flight lines spaced 300 meters (m) apart with east-west tie lines flown every 3000 m. A mean terrain clearance...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assisted the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) with the Massachusetts Estuary Project (MEP), by delineating groundwater-contributing areas to various hydrologic features including ponds, streams, and coastal water bodies, throughout southeastern Massachusetts. These contributing areas were delineated over a 6-year period from 2003 to 2008 using previously published USGS groundwater-flow models for the Plymouth-Carver region (Masterson and others, 2009), the Sagamore (western) and Monomoy (eastern) flow lenses of Cape Cod (Walter and Whealan, 2005), and lower Cape Cod (Masterson, 2004). The original USGS groundwater-contributing areas were subsequently...

In 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency characterized water-quality stressors and ecological conditions in 100 wadeable streams across the Midwestern United States. The goal of the study was to determine the relative effects of multiple ecological stressors – contaminants, nutrients, sediment, and habitat – on ecological communities in the streams. The Midwest is an intensely agricultural region where pesticides in streams pose risks to aquatic biota, but temporal variability in pesticide concentrations makes characterization of their exposure to organisms challenging. To compensate for the effects of temporal variability, we deployed polar organic chemical integrative samplers...

Widespread nitrate contamination of groundwater in agricultural areas poses a major challenge to sustainable water resources. Efficient analysis of nitrate fluxes across large regions also remains difficult. This study introduces a method of characterizing nitrate transport processes continuously across regional unsaturated zones and groundwater based on surrogate, machine-learning metamodels of an N flux process-based model. The metamodels used boosted regression trees (BRTs) to relate mappable variables to parameters and outputs of a “vertical flux method” (VFM) applied in the Fox-Wolf-Peshtigo (FWP) area in Wisconsin. In this context, the metamodels are upscaling the VFM results throughout the region, and the...

Streamflow and phosphorus concentrations were monitored in the Assabet River in central Massachusetts in order to evaluate concentrations and loads in the river before, during, and after changes in the amount of total phosphorus that was discharged to the river from three wastewater-treatment plants. At four locations the U.S. Geological Survey collected weekly flow-proportional, composite samples of water from the Assabet River for analysis of concentrations of total phosphorus and orthophosphate. Streamflow and concentration data were used to estimate total phosphorus and orthophosphate loads in the river and compare them with total phosphorus load outputs from three wastewater-treatment plants. Data were collected...

This projects primary goal was to provide data on occurrence and abundance of SAV resources within the fresh to saline coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico, and to relate these findings to key environmental variables. The data set provides the collected data from 2013, 2014 and 2015 on site location, discrete water quality, aquatic vegetation cover and biomass by species. The same 384 sites were collected each year, between June and September. This project was co-funded by the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center and the Gulf Coast Prairie and the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperatives. This data set presents the lithologic interpretation of rock cores from boreholes 83BR-89BR collected from the mudstone aquifer underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. Continuous core from these boreholes was collected and visually interpreted to identify characteristics of the depositional environment of the mudstone. Three types of mudstone were identified: a black-fissile mudstone (BLK-FIS); a gray-laminated mudstone (GRY-LAM); and a gray massive mudstone (GRY-MAS). The BLK-FIS mudstone is associated with a deep-water depositional environment. The GRY-MAS mudstone is associated with a shallow-water depositional environment. The GRY-LAM mudstone is associated with a transitional depositional...

Significant uncertainty remains in how and where crustal shortening occurs throughout the eastern Cascade Range in Washington State. Using lidar imagery, we identified a ~5 km long lineament in Swakane canyon near Wenatchee, roughly coincident with a strand of the Entiat fault. Topographic profiles across the lineament reveal a southwest-side-up break in slope with an average of ~3 m of vertical separation of the hillslope surface. We consider a range of possible origins for this feature, including differential erosion across a fault-line scarp, slope failure (sackung or landslide), and surface deformation across an active fault strand. Based on trenching, radiocarbon and luminescence dating, and ground penetrating...
