This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Carlisle 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in Pennsylvania. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter resolution lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2019 and 2020 and downloaded from the USGS National Map TNM Download. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted to highlight local relief according to a topographic position index (TPI) calculation.

Iron oxide-apatite (IOA) deposits of the Adirondack Mountains of New York locally contain elevated REE concentrations (e.g. Taylor and others, 2019). Critical to evaluating resource potential is understanding the genesis of the IOA deposits that host the REE-rich minerals. As part of this effort, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting bedrock geologic mapping, geochronology, geochemistry, and geophysics in the region. Published and ongoing research demonstrates the spatial association of IOA deposits with the Lyon Mountain Granite Gneiss (LMG), so understanding the relationship of the LMG to the IOA deposits is important for resource evaluation—however the age and origin of the LMG remain contentious. As...

Monroe County, in southeastern West Virginia, hosts world-class karst within carbonate units of Mississippian and Ordovician age. There are at least 412 known caves in the county. Location data for these caves were collected from the West Virginia Speleological Survey (WVASS) Bulletin 22 (Dasher, 2019). Point features were created in ArcGIS Pro for each cave location and were used to make a point density raster. This raster displays the number of cave points per square kilometer.

Data consist of presence / absence records of planktic foraminifer species from 5 core samples at 3 localities in southeast Florida. Samples are placed in biostratigraphic zones and ages are estimated from calibrated first and last appearances of select taxa.
This Scientific Data Release is a spatial geodatabase representation of Braun, D. These geospatial data depict surficial geologic materials in the Pennsylvania portion of the Allentown 30 x 60-minute quadrangle in eastern Pennsylvania. The map area shows the effects of at least three Pleistocene glacial advances. The report map is a compilation and revision of published and unpublished, 1:24,000-scale, detailed-reconnaissance maps. This data release publishes datasets within and surrounding the Piney Branch watershed located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan suburb of Vienna, Virginia. This dataset was utilized in studies that investigated the accuracy and application of geospatial modeling techniques, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetric methods, and digital elevation model (DEM) differencing to assess and quantify geomorphic and anthropogenic landform change. The United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) three-dimensional digital elevation program (3DEP) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) digital terrain models (DTMs) were used together with and as a means for comparison to DTMs created from historical aerial imagery. The creation...

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

Data from 316 boreholes (including coreholes) that penetrated buried pre-Middle Jurassic basement rocks that lie beneath Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain sedimentary deposits in Florida and Alabama were compiled from non-proprietary, mostly published sources in order to support subsurface geologic mapping, geologic interpretation of geophysical data (aeromagnetic, gravity, seismic), topical studies as in geochronology, and applications ranging from mineral, energy, and water resources to earthquake hazards. Boreholes into bedrock beneath the coastal plain near the Fall Line in Alabama reveal buried extensions of geologic units exposed in the Piedmont, and those near the Gulf coast and beneath Florida provide rare...

This Scientific Data Release is a spatial geodatabase containing Woodruff, K.D. Christopher, M.J., 1982, Thickness of Regolith in the Delaware Piedmont: Delaware Geological Survey Open File Report No. 19, scale 1:24,000, formatted to Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) standards. These geospatial data depict the total thickness (regolith) of both the loose, transported material and the weathered rock that overlies crystalline rocks of the Delaware Piedmont. Land-use planners of many kinds (including National Forest managers, developers, city and rural planners, and highway builders) need accurate geologic data with which to make informed decisions. This geodatabase was produced in support of the U.S. Geological Survey U.S....

A 2,000 year-long oceanographic history of a Canadian Beaufort Sea continental shelf site (60-meters water depth) near the Mackenzie River outlet is reconstructed from various proxies: ostracode faunal assemblages, shell stable isotope ratios (δ18O, δ13C) and sediment biogenic silica. These proxies are extracted from three sediment cores that made a composite section, HLY1302 JPC32, GGC30, MC29. The composite core has chronology derived from radiocarbon dating and 137Cs and 210Pb correlations.

From 16 June to 30 July, 2021, a Virginia Tech team of 4-6 sampled the fish community in 30 Shenandoah Valley streams (Virginia and West Virginia, USA) as part of a larger stream-health study including other teams who surveyed geomorphology, water quality, flow, temperature, macroinvertebrates, and fish health at the same 30 streams. The fish community team also sampled three additional bonus streams (SiteID's FOLL, NAKE, and TUMB) during 19-22 August, 2021. These 33 streams had upstream drainage areas of 7 to 46 sq. km and included 4 James River tributaries (SiteID's POAG, MLRB, CEDR, PISG), one Potomac River tributary (HARL), and 28 Shenandoah River tributaries. At each stream, we sampled fish from two reaches...

Three semi-automated detection approaches using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) have been performed to identify artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) riverine dredges on the Madeira River in Brazil. The methods are: i) Search for Unidentified Maritime Objects (SUMO), an established method for large ocean ship detection; and two techniques specifically developed for riverine environments: ii) a local detection method; and iii) a global threshold method. The results from each method are contained on this landing page along with the visual interpretation dataset of SAR data used as the validation dataset. The pre-processed SAR data used to produce these results are found also found on this page.
