A gravel pile established by the Montana Highway Department was jostled about by the earthquake and as a result compacted the ground below it to form a big, broad, shallow depression. Index card: The source area of the slide. View is southeastward. The mountain crest is about 1,300 feet above the valley floor, and part of the mountain slid northeastward into the valley. Part of dolomite buttress is in lower right corner of photograph. At the bottom of the photograph is a segment of the parking area constructed on the slide by the U.S. Forest Service as part of their Madison River Canyon Earthquake Area. A new highway (Montana Highway 499) now follows the Madison Canyon southwestward parallel to Earthquake Lake and across the Madison slide. Hebgen Lake earthquake. Montana. August 1959.

Index card: This photograph, taken in 1960, shows three of the people who were involved in the Hebgen Lake earthquake. On the left is a gentleman whose name I cannot recall but who was camped in the Bear Creek Campground and was one of the few who alerted many of the campers in that general area that an earthquake had occurred. The man in the center is George Hungerford, foreman of the dam, who figured so prominently in many of the stories involving Hebgen Dam. The man on the right is Witkind, U.S. Geological Survey geologist. Dog is "Tawny", Witkind's dog. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Gallatin County, Montana. August 1959.
