Standing dead trees, or snags, are an important habitat element in any forested system, and provide diurnal or seasonal shelter for many LCC priority species. The ISA landscape endpoint for snag density in upland hardwood woodland and forest systems targets one large (≥16” dbh) snag for every five acres of forest (or approximately ~0.2 large snags/acre), reflected by cavity-roosting habitat needs of the silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) and ample other avian, and mammalian species that require cavities in snags to carry out their life history. We used USFS imputed density of large (>16” dbh) snags data (USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center, personal communication) extracted through...

The purpose of the plowprint is to track annual grassland conversion to cropland across the Mississippi River Basin and Great Plains region, and to provide a way to measure the loss of this important habitat type, against which annual changes can be compared. This report tracks changes at the sub-regional scale, as well as in the context of the broader geography, and highlights key elements of change each year. The focus of this report is on changes in grassland conversion from 2014-2015, based on data from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Cropland Data Layer and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Annual Crop Inventory. For this analysis, cropland is defined as any annually planted agricultural...

This dataset explores the physical reality of the population growth from 2005 to 2060 without changes to existing land use policy or gross urban density. The land use suitability analysis displayed in this dataset was performed by the GeoPlan Center for 1000 Friends of Florida and is a companion study to "A Time for Leadership: Growth Management and Florida 2060" prepared for 1000 Friends of Florida by researchers at Georgia Tech's Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development. GeoPlan's project was undertaken using relatively straightforward geographic information systems (GIS) suitability analysis constructed on a foundation of clearly articulated assumptions. The three key assumptions were: 1)...

From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

Limited midstory density was also identified in the Integrated Science Agenda as an important component of upland hardwood systems in the GCPO geography, with midstory coverage ≤20% indicating a healthy additional vertical strata in the system. Midstory is an important habitat component for several ISA priority species, particularly those avian species who require midstory structure for nesting such as the wood thrush (Hylocichla mustelina). We again used plot-level Forest Inventory and Assessment data imputed at 250 m resolution across the GCPO LCC to assess tree density. The USFS imputed tree density data product provides raster maps for the conterminous U.S. generated using 250 m resolution MODIS satellite imagery,...

This layer was created by selecting classes relevant to conservation of the grassland-prairie-savanna broadly defined habitat from the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type (evt) spatial data product clipped to the boundary of the GCPO LCC. The layer was generated as in input layer for the Draft Grassland Condition Index raster data layer in support of the GCPO LCC rapid ecological assessment of the Grassland-Prairie-Savanna Priority Habitat. In selecting vegetation types, “grasslands” were defined as any landscape dominated by grass, excluding classes considered to be features of other priority habitats, such as marshes, dunes, glades, woodlands, and pine savanna. The 44 selected grassland classes included pasture/hay...

Geographic ranges of pine savanna and woodland types in the southeastern U.S. Divisions are based on composition and abundance of overstory trees and ground-layer grasses. Overstory tree species include longleaf pine and slash pine. Data for Figure 4 in:Peet, R.K., Platt, W.J., Costanza, J.K. 2018. The ecology and management of fire-maintained savanna ecosystems of the Southeastern U.S. Coastal Plain. Chapter in: Ecology and Recovery of Eastern Old-Growth Forests. Systematic conservation planning is well suited to address the many large-scale biodiversity conservation challenges facing the Appalachian region. However, broad, well-connected landscapes will be required to sustain many of the natural resources important to this area into the future. If these landscapes are to be resilient to impending change, it will likely require an orchestrated and collaborative effort reaching across jurisdictional and political boundaries. The first step in realizing this vision is prioritizing discrete places and actions that hold the greatest promise for the protection of biodiversity. Five conservation design elements covering many critical ecological processes and patterns across the...

This dataset features suitable habitat connected to the main channel (based on floodplain inundation) within managed areas at discharges from 15,000 cfs to 100,000 cfs. The spatial extent for floodplain inundation modeling in the lower Trinity River was from Romayor, Texas, to approximately Moss Bluff, Texas. River sections were modeled using steady flow conditions. For the upper section, discharge and stage were both available for the two gages (Romayor USGS 08066500 and Liberty USGS 08067000). For the lower section, the Moss Bluff gage (USGS 08067100) is tidally-influenced, so gage height didn’t correspond to upstream changes in discharge. Depth rasters were exported from HEC-RAS 5.0.0. Since the lower section...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Condition Index ranks pixels (10-m) according to how well they meet the Desired State for the Tidal Marsh habitat system, which is described qualitatively and quantitatively in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Higher values indicate sites closer to the Desired State. Value of 2 indicates areas appropriate for restoration but currently under an alternative land use (i.e. potential habitat). Value of 1 indicates areas projected by USGS to become Tidal Marsh under a 2-m sea-level rise scenario. Please see...
