Data set contains individual structures and use-areas identifiable from scanned images of 1944 hand-drawn map of buildings and facilities at Palmyra Atoll during World War II, at which time the atoll served as a training facility for the U.S. Navy. Scanned images were georeferenced against control points identifiable from 2007 QuickBird satellite imagery and on control points for which positional data were gathered during sampling in October and November 2008. Georeferenced image was then used to delineate individual structures and other areas as polygons. Attributes were taken from legend for 1944 map.

Shapefile created by USGS. This is a channel polygon coverage digitized from aerial photography at the top of the high bank. The low-altitude aerial orthophotos were provided by the US Army Corps of Engineers and were acquired 11/1/2012 to 11/21/2012 under leaves off and relatively low-water conditions. Notably, these conditions post-date 2011 flooding and channel changes. The features digitized correspond to the interpreted high bank, or bankfull conditions. Types of channel polygons were also discriminated: main channel, side channel chutes, islands, backwaters, and irregular off-channel aquatic features.

The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Seboeis Unit Vegetation Mapping Project was initiated in the fall of 2019 by a grant through the USGS Natural Resource Preservation Program to classify and map vegetation types of the Seboeis Unit thereby providing resource managers and biological researchers with useful baseline vegetation information. High-resolution aerial imagery was collected on October 5, 2019 with a Phase One iXU-R 180 RGB camera co-mounted with a Phase One iXU-RS 160 Achromatic camera. Images from the two cameras are merged to create 4-band imagery that can be displayed as either true-color (RGB) or color-infrared (CIR). The imagery has a resolution of approximately 0.15 meter/pixel (6 inches)....

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release includes locations for 12,422 USGS streamgages as indexed along the network of streams (flowlines) in NHDPlus Version 2.1 (NHDPlus v2, Moore and Dewald, 2016). The dataset is one of two datasets developed for the Streamgage Watershed InforMation (SWIM) project. This dataset, which is referred to as “SWIM streamgage locations,” was created in support of the second dataset of basin characteristics and disturbance indexes. The streamgages are located in the conterminous United States and have a minimum record length of 20 years of daily streamflow values or at least 20 years of peak flows (USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) database, U.S. Geological Survey,...

These contours represent static groundwater levels based on depth-to-water measurements in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, Nevada. Groundwater-level contours for Smith Valley were first published by Rush and Schroer (1976) and subsequently published electronically by Welborn and Medina (2022). The Smith Valley groundwater-level contours represent conditions in the spring of 1972. Groundwater-level contours for Mason Valley were first published by Huxel and Harris (1969) and subsequently published electronically by Lopes and others (2006). The Mason Valley groundwater-level contours represent conditions during 1965-1966. The original groundwater-level contours from Smith Valley and Mason Valley (Huxel and Harris,...

This dataset, created in support of USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2020-5075, Estimates of Groundwater Discharge by Evapotranspiration, Stump Spring and Hiko Springs, Clark County, Nevada, 2016-18, represents the groundwater discharge area (GDA) for the Hiko Springs area. Vegetated areas within the GDA are composed of phreatophytic shrubs interspersed with xeric vegetation and bare soil. The GDA was delineated by visual interpretation of 1-meter National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial imagery acquired in May of 2015. Areas of channel scour within the GDA resulting from a flood event in September 2015 were delineated from a 1.84 meter resolution 2016 Worldview 2 image.

Within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), three-dimensional (3D) geologic models are created as part of geologic framework studies, to support energy, minerals, or water resource assessments, and to inform geologic hazard assessments. Such models are often used within the organization as digital input into process and predictive models. 3D geological modeling typically supports research and project work within a specific part of the USGS – called Mission Areas – and as a result, 3D modeling activities are decentralized and model results are released on a project-by-project basis. This digital data release inventories and catalogs, for the first time, 3D geological models constructed by the USGS across all Mission...

This dataset consists of short-term (less than 37 years) shoreline change rates for the north coast of Alaska from Icy Cape to Cape Prince of Wales. Rate calculations were computed within a GIS using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.4, an ArcGIS extension developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Rates of shoreline change were calculated using a linear regression rate-of-change (lrr) method based on available shoreline data between 1980s and 2016. A reference baseline was used as the originating point for the orthogonal transects cast by the DSAS software. The transects intersect each shoreline establishing measurement points, which are then used to calculate rates of change.

In 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic soundings at 31 locations in the Owasco Inlet valley, Cayuga and Tompkins Counties, New York to help determine thickness of the unconsolidated deposits. The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008; Fairchild and others, 2013). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record ambient seismic noise. In areas that have a strong acoustic contrast between...
