This part of DS 781 presents the seafloor-character map of Monterey Canyon and Vicinity, California. The raster data file is included in "SeafloorCharacter_5m_MontereyCanyon.zip," which is accessible from https://doi.org/10.3133/ds781. These data accompany the pamphlet and map sheets of Dartnell, P., Maier, K.L., Erdey, M.D., Dieter, B.E., Golden, N.E., Johnson, S.Y., Hartwell, S.R., Cochrane, G.R., Ritchie, A.C., Finlayson, D.P., Kvitek, R.G., Sliter, R.W., Greene, H.G., Davenport, C.W., Endris, C.A., and Krigsman, L.M. The change detection data is the classified difference in the percentage of vegetation on the July 14, 2011 Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM) data set collected before Hurricane Sandy and the July 19, 2013 Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI)data set collected after Hurricane Sandy. Hurricane Sandy made landfall near Brigandine, New Jersey on October 29, 2012. The actual difference in the percentage of vegetation is used in the calculation, not the three-class classification that is the basis of the Marsh Surface Condition Index data. The eleven classes consist of five classes (5-20%,>20%-40%,>40%-60%,>60%-80%,>80%)with decreases in the percentage of vegetation cover after Hurricane Sandy, Three classes (5-20%,>20%-40%,>40%-60%)with...

This part of DS 781 presents data for the acoustic-backscatter map of Monterey Canyon and Vicinity map area, California. Backscatter data are provided as separate grids depending on mapping system and processing method. These metadata describe acoustic-backscatter data collected and processed by the U.S. Geological Survey. The raster data files are included in "BackscatterA_USGS_SWATH_MontereyCanyon.zip," which is accessible from https://doi.org/10.3133/ds781. We used NLCD 2011, SSURGO, and SEGAP data to map the density of desired resources for open pine ecosystems and six focal species of birds and 2 reptiles within the historic range of longleaf pine east of the Mississippi River. Binary rasters were created of sites with desired characteristics such as land form, hydrology, land use and land cover, soils, potential habitat for focal species, and putative source populations of focal species. Each raster was smoothed using a kernel density estimator. Rasters were combined and scaled to map priority locations for the management of each focal species. Species’ rasters were combined and scaled to provide maps of overall priority for birds and for birds and reptiles. For...

This part of DS 781 presents data for the depth-to-transition map of the Point Conception to Hueneme Canyon, California, region. The raster data file is included in "DepthToTransition_PointConceptionToHuenemeCanyon.zip," which is accessible from http://dx.doi.org/10.5066/F7891424. As part of the USGS's California State Waters Mapping Project, a 50-m grid of sediment thickness for the seafloor within the 3-nautical mile limit between Point Conception and Hueneme Canyon was generated from seismic-reflection data collected in 2014 (USGS activity 2014-632-FA) supplemented with outcrop and geologic structure (fault) information following the methodology of Wong (2012). Water depths determined from bathymetry data were...

This part of DS 781 presents data for 2-m and 5-m bathymetry and shaded-relief maps of Monterey Canyon and Vicinity, California. Bathymetry data are provided as separate grids depending on the mapping resolution. Data collected at shallower depths by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) have a spatial resolution of 2 m per pixel, whereas data collected at deeper depths by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) have a spatial resolution of 5-m per pixel. This metadata file describes the 2-m data collected by the USGS and CSUMB, and processed by the USGS. The raster data file is included in "BathymetryA_2m_MontereyCanyon.zip," which is accessible from...
