This child item describes a public supply delivery machine learning model that was developed to estimate public-supply deliveries. Publicly supplied water may be delivered to domestic users or to commercial, industrial, institutional, and irrigation (CII) users. This model predicts total, domestic, and CII per capita rates for public-supply water service areas within the conterminous United States for 2009-2020. This child item contains model input datasets, code used to build the delivery machine learning model, and national predictions. This dataset is part of a larger data release using machine learning to predict public-supply water use for 12-digit hydrologic units from 2000-2020. This page includes the following...

We present whole-rock geochemical analyses of 12 core samples obtained from three serpentinite mud volcanoes (Yinazao, Asut Tesoru, and Fantangisna) located on the forearc of the Mariana subduction system, where the Pacific Plate descends beneath the Philippine Sea Plate. The core was collected during International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 366 of 2016-2017. The materials comprising the mud volcanoes have risen diapirically along normal faults in the forearc that may extend down to the subducting slab. Ten of the samples are thoroughly serpentinized ultramafic rocks. The other two come from cored intervals into Fantangisna mud volcano that contain materials derived from the subducting Pacific Plate, and...

The NABat sampling frame is a grid-based finite-area frame spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico consisting of N total number of 10- by 10-km (100-km2) grid cell sample units for the continental United States, Canada, and Alaska and 5- by 5-km (25km2) for Hawaii and Puerto Rico. This grain size is biologically appropriate given the scale of movement of most bat species, which routinely travel many kilometers each night between roosts and foraging areas and along foraging routes. A Generalized Random-Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) Survey Design draw was added to the sample units from the raw sampling grids (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9M00P17). This dataset represents the final 2018 NABat Sampling grid with...

This dataset represents 505 campsites along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon with associated debris flow probabilities calculated for approximately a 100-year period (Griffiths and others, 2004) and geomorphic attributes mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey, Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (USGS-GCMRC) (Hadley and others, 2018). The campsite polygons were developed as part of a master campsite database that was a collaborative effort to maintain between the National Park Service in Grand Canyon National Park and the USGS-GCMRC. Debris flow probabilities have been added as an attribute from ungauged tributary watersheds published in 2004 (Griffiths and others, 2004). Area and percentages of campsites...

Our goal for this work is to place better constraints on aeolian atmospheric-surface interactions through long-term monitoring of an active, bi-modal dune field located near Grand Falls, Arizona. This dune field has been monitored since 2013 by the USGS, and data from each collection year are released as USGS Data Release products. Data described here is the imagery component (individual time-stamp images of an active ripple field) of the Imagery, Photogrammetry and Meteorological Data from December 2022 to April 2023, Grand Falls Dune Field, Arizona USGS Data Release. Our instruments are set up near an active ripple field in the Grand Falls Dune Field. The instrument array includes a meteorological weather station...

The U.S. Geological Survey acquired high-resolution P- and S-wave seismic data across the Frijoles Fault strand of the San Gregorio Fault Zone (SGFZ) at northern Año Nuevo, California in 2012. SGFZ is a right-lateral fault system that is mainly offshore, and prior studies provide highly variable slip estimates, which indicates uncertainty about the seismic hazard it poses. Therefore, the primary goal of the seismic survey was to better understand the structure and geometry of the onshore section of the Frijoles Fault strand of the SGFZ. We deployed 118 geophones (channels) at 5-m spacing along a linear profile centered on the mapped surface trace of the Frijoles Fault and co-located active P- and S-wave sources...

These data are a geospatial representation of potential moderate or high ground shaking intensity for seven M5 or greater aftershocks resulting from the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurring on the Hayward Fault on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. These data take existing ground shaking data for the HayWired mainshock and seven aftershocks (M6.21 Palo Alto, M5.69 Palo Alto, M5.22 Palo Alto, M5.26 Palo Alto, M5.98 Mountain View, M6.40 Cupertino, and M5.35 Sunnyvale) and combine them into a single ground shaking intensity surface intended for estimating possible repeat exposure to moderate or high intensity ground shaking. This vector .SHP dataset was developed...

This sampling frame is a set of grid-based finite-area frames spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The grid for the United States is broken into individual grids for the continental United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Alaska is combined with Canada into a single grid. Each country/state/territory extent consists of four nested sampling grids at 50x50km, 10x10km, 5x5km, and 1x1km resolutions. The original 10x10km continental United States grid was developed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture for use in the interagency “Bat Grid” monitoring program in the Pacific Northwest and was expanded across Canada, the United States, and Mexico for the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat)....

Sediment particles can strongly bind metals, effectively repartitioning them from solution to a solid phase. As a result, sediments may accumulate and retain metals released to an aquatic environment. Sediment cores provide a historical record of metal inputs that can reveal anthropogenic influences (Förstner and Wittmann, 1979). Specifically, studies of sediment cores in San Francisco Bay chronicled metal inputs and suggested that legacy contamination can remain a chronic source of metals to the system owing to sediment mixing and redistribution (Hornberger and others, 1999; Van Geen and Luoma, 1999). Metals in sediments also indicate exposure levels to benthic animals through contact with, and ingestion of, bottom...

One phenomenon that has been shown to concentrate and release per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water is the formation of natural foams. For surface water foams to form, surface active compounds or surfactants must be present in the water along with a source of gas bubbles. Some examples of surface-active compounds include humic and fulvic acids, colloidal particles, and lipids and proteins. The relationship between PFAS and dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important because studies have shown that DOM can affect PFAS fate and bioavailability in aquatic systems and treatment processes. The results from this assessment will improve our understanding of PFAS fate and transport in the environment....

This data release provides updated borehole information to build upon and further refine a three-dimensional (3-D) texture model of valley-fill deposits in the Central Valley created by Faunt and others (2009). This model aids in understanding the aquifer system of the entire valley and will be later utilized in a groundwater flow model. The original database contained approximately 8,500 boreholes and with the addition of new data, the model now contains 14,683 boreholes. The new borehole lithologic data was sourced from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) Online System of Well Completion Reports (OSWCR) and the California Central Valley Groundwater-Surface Water Simulation Model (C2VSim). This dataset...
