To address the data and information gap for characterizing coastal drought, a coastal salinity index (CSI) was developed using salinity data (Conrads 2016; Conrads and Darby, 2017). The CSI uses an approach similar to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), a readily available drought index that is widely used for monitoring meteorological droughts (McKee and others, 1993). The CSI substitutes total monthly precipitation with monthly mean salinity data to determine the probability of recording a given salinity value in a particular month. The initial investigation demonstrated that the index could be used to delineate short- and long-term drought (saline) and wet (high freshwater inflow) conditions; however,...

The U.S. Geological Survey and a consortium of local governments in North Carolina have partnered together to track water quality and quantity conditions in several of the area’s water-supply reservoirs and streams, known as the Triangle Area Water Supply Monitoring Project (TAWSMP). This data release contains the associated data described in the Open-File Report, "Triangle Area Water Supply Monitoring Project, North Carolina-Overview of Hydrologic and Water-Quality Monitoring Activities and Data Quality Assurance". These datasets were collected during October 2019 - September 2022 (Water Years 2020-2022). The data release includes nine items: [Triangle_2020_22_Figure_1.pdf]: This figure shows site locations and...

As part of the Triangle Area Water Supply Monitoring Program, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a study to evaluate the occurrence and distribution of mercury in 14 streams and 15 reservoirs in the Triangle area of North Carolina. This Data Release contains the associated data described in the Scientific Investigations Report, "Occurrence and Distribution of Mercury in Streams and Reservoirs in the Triangle Area of North Carolina, July 2007 – June 2009". Water samples were collected seasonally between July 2007 and June 2009 for laboratory analysis of mercury, organic carbon, chlorophyll a, sulfate, and suspended sediment. Field measurements of dissolved oxygen, pH, water temperature, and specific conductance...

The Bushy Park Reservoir is a relatively shallow impoundment in a semi-tropical climate and is the principal water supply for the 400,000 people of the City of Charleston and the surrounding areas including the industries in the Bushy Park Industrial Complex. Although there is an adequate supply of freshwater in the reservoir, there are taste-and-odor water-quality concerns. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) worked in cooperation with the Charleston Water System to study the hydrology and water-quality of the Bushy Park Reservoir to identify factors affecting water-quality conditions. This data release is for water-quality profiles collected with a hand-held calibrated field meter from a manned boat concurrent with...

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) began in January 2015 with the purpose of deepening the Savannah Harbor federal shipping channel to allow access to larger shipping vessels (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 2018a). There are various features and mitigation efforts to the SHEP, one of which is the installation of a dissolved-oxygen (DO) injection system at two locations along the Savannah River to maintain pre-SHEP DO levels in the harbor (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 2018b). The injection systems are installed upstream near Georgia Power Plant McIntosh in Effingham County, Georgia and downstream near Hutchinson Island, Chatham County, Georgia. Designed to maintain DO levels in the harbor as they were before...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data collected from Bushy Park Reservoir, South Carolina, from September 2013 to April 2015. The digital dataset includes samples collected at 1 to 7 locations on Bushy Park Reservoir sites. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundance (density) and biovolume are reported.
