This mapping documents the changes in extent and condition of vernal pool habitat in the Great Valley between 2005 and 2012. "Vernal pool habitat" is defined as vernal pools and the surrounding upland (typically grassland) habitat matrix. The 2005 basemap was created by using double-blind mapping protocol and included 21.4 million acres in and surrounding the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys (Witham et al 2013). The area included in the 2012 remapping effort focused on the 807,820 acres identified in the 2005 map and areas immediately surrounding the previously mapped polygons. Special attention was paid to areas where habitat was being created through mitigation banking. The result of the 2012 remapping shows...

The 25,000 km of shoreline in southeast Alaska was surveyed for waterbirds by fixed-wing aircraft in summer and winter during the period 1997 to 2002. A ground/boat survey double sampled 20% of the summer habitat and 5% of the winter habitat to adjust and enhance the air survey. The most abundant species during the summer surveys, with visibility correction factors applied, were gulls (Larus spp.; 306,200, CV = 0.004), scoters (Melanitta spp.; 185,700, CV = 0.004), and Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus; 34,640, CV = 0.03). The most abundant species observed during the winter surveys were goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica and B. clangula; 121,920, CV = 0.01), gulls (105,000, CV = 0.01), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos;...

Conant et al. (1991) describe swan survey methods used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska and present the results of surveys using these methods. Full citation: Conant, B., J.I. Emerging applications of ecosystem resilience and resistance concepts in sagebrush ecosystems allow managers to better predict and mitigate impacts of wildfire and invasive annual grasses. Soil temperature and moisture strongly influence the kind and amount of vegetation, and consequently, are closely tied to sagebrush ecosystem resilience and resistance (Chambers et al. 2014). Soil taxonomic temperature and moisture regimes can be used as indicators of resilience and resistance at landscape scales to depict environmental gradients in sagebrush ecosystems that range from cold/cool-moist sites to warm-dry sites. We aggregated soil survey spatial and tabular data to facilitate broad-scale analyses of resilience and...

Vegetation and land cover data for Ellicott Slough NWR. This dataset was generated through interpretation of high resolution (1m spatial resolution) aerial photography from the National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) , acquired in the summer of 2009. Field sampling was conducted in March 2010 to inform the interpretation process, but no formal classifcation accuracy assessment was conducted.

This 1996 publication by John I. Hodges, James G. King, Bruce Conant, and Henry A. Hanson summarized population abundance trends of waterfowl, loons, and sandhill cranes from data collected in the Alaska strata (i.e., strata 1-11) of the North American Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey during 1957-1994. The authors also presented results of analyses that compared the detection rates of right- vs. left-seat observers (i.e., with vs. without piloting duties).
