PURPOSE: The review and revision of the Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Arctic NWR) in northeastern Alaska is proposed. Originally established in 1960 as Arctic National Wildlife Range, Arctic NWR encompasses 19.3 million acres of land and water, including eight million acres of designated wilderness and three wild and scenic rivers (Ivishak, Sheenjek, and Wind rivers). The purpose of this map is to provide a georeferenced characterization of vegetation in the early stages of Euro-American settlement. One of the research uses for the surveys nationally is for presettlement vegetation. This data can be used to analyze presettlement vegetation patterns for the purpose of determining natural community potential, productivity indexes, and patterns of natural disturbance. Fish dump toxic industrial compounds in Alaskan lakes on their return from the ocean. Pollutants are widely distributed by the atmosphere and the oceans1. Contaminants can also be transported by salmon and amplified through the food chain. Here we show that groups of migrating sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) can act as bulk-transport vectors of persistent industrial pollutants known as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which they assimilate from the ocean and then convey over vast distances back to their natal spawning lakes. Understanding the role of permafrost in controlling groundwater flow paths and fluxes is central in studies aimed at assessing potential climate change impacts on vegetation, species habitat, biogeochemical cycling, and biodiversity. Recent field studies in interior Alaska show evidence of hydrologic changes hypothesized to result from permafrost degradation. This study assesses the hydrologic control exerted by permafrost, elucidates modes of regional groundwater flow for various spatial permafrost patterns, and evaluates potential hydrologic consequences of permafrost degradation. Dr. Richard Janda of the USGS began a channel monitoring program in Redwood Creek in northern coastal California in 1973. The USGS continued this work through 2013, when the Research Geologist, Dr. Mary Madej retired. This effort produced 40 years of channel change data in rivers that were disrupted by severe erosion following timber harvest of old-growth redwood forests, a portion of the program's data (plus 1953 data) has been preserved in this data release. MethodsStudy area: Our initial study area included the entire globe. We began with a seamless grid of cells with a resolution of 0.5 degrees (i.e., ~50 km at the equator). Next, we created polylines representing coastlines using SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) v4.1 global digital elevation model data at a resolution of 250 m (Reuter et al. 2007). We used these coastline polylines to identify and retain cells that intersected the coast. We excluded 192,227 cells that did not intersect the coast. To avoid cells with minimal potential coastal wetland habitat, we used the coastline data to remove an additional 1,056 coastal cells that contained less than or equal to 5% coverage of land. The Rainwater Basin wetland complex (RWB) provides critical spring migration habitat for millions of waterfowl annually. As the region was settled, the abundant wetlands were drained for agricultural purposes. The ephemeral nature of these wetlands and lack of contemporary data prompted the Rainwater Basin Joint Venture to acquire aerial photography on an annual basis. Imagery was collected during peak waterfowl migration in the spring of 2004 and annually from 2006 to 2015. These years characterize a wide range of high plains climactic variability, ranging from drought to flooding.
