NOAA’s Greater Atlantic Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network Database was examined for its utility as a potential long-term time series for the evaluation of phenological patterns and shifts. Although records from stranding events represent sick or injured animals, these data have been found to be reasonably comparable to survey data and provide useful information on species’ distribution, abundance, and foraging ecology (Maldini et al., 2005; Staudinger et al., 2014; Johnston et al., 2012, 2015).
