Little is known about how design and testing methodologies affect the macroinvertebrate communities that are held captive in mesocosms. To address this gap, we conducted a 32-day test to determine how seeded invertebrate communities changed once removed from the natural stream and introduced to the laboratory. We evaluated larvae survival and adult emergence in controls from 4 subsequent experiments, as well as corresponding within-river community changes. The experimental streams maintained about 80% of the invertebrates that originally colonized the introduced substrates. Many macroinvertebrate populations experienced changes in numbers through time suggesting that these taxa are unlikely to maintain static populations...

Near-surface geophysical surveys were conducted during March 2018 in an irrigated agricultural drainage near Delta, Colorado, locally know as Sunflower Drain. This data release presents results of two surveys, one using fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) and the second using a horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) passive seismic method. For the FO-DTS, a temperature sensitive armored cable with a spatial resolution of 3.31 feet (1.01 meter) was deployed along a 0.3 mile reach of Sunflower Drain. Data were collected and processed using an Oryx model SR Remote Logging DTS unit (Sensornet, 2020) run over a 48-hour period and integrated at 10-minute intervals. The DTS data are provided in two...

The American Tunnel, the Black Hawk mine, the Gold King mine, the Mogul mine, and the Red and Bonita mine are located in the Cement Creek watershed, tributary to the upper Animas River near Silverton, Colorado. All five sites have tunnels that drain groundwater from abandoned underground mine workings to the surface. This draining water has elevated concentrations of metals and degrades water quality in Cement Creek. Water quality (pH, and dissolved copper, manganese, and zinc concentrations) and discharge data were compiled from multiple sources to examine changes in these parameters through time. Copper, manganese, and zinc loads calculated from these data are included in the data files. Data are reported for...

Near-field remote sensing methods were used to collect Doppler velocity and pulsed stage radar data at 10 conventional U.S. Geological Survey streamgages in river reaches with varying hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics. Basin sizes ranged from 381 to 66,200 square kilometers and included agricultural, desert, forest, mixed, and high-gradient mountain environments. During the siting and operational phases, radar-derived mean-channel (mean) velocity and discharge were computed using the Probability Concept (PC) and were compared against conventional instantaneous measurements and stage-discharge time series. During siting phase, radars were located, installed, and PC parameters computed. To test the efficacy...

This data release includes elemental analysis of soil samples collected at breccia-pipe uranium mines, at one undeveloped breccia-pipe uranium deposit, and at a reference site in northern Arizona. Samples were collected near the Arizona 1, Canyon, Kanab North, and Pinenut uranium mines, over the EZ2 breccia-pipe uranium deposit, and at the Little Robinson Tank reference site. Samples were collected around the Arizona 1 mine after active mining had ceased during July 2015; around and within the mine yard at the Canyon mine during mine-development activity and before active mining occurred in June 2013; around and within the mine yard at the Kanab North mine during reclamation and before reclamation was completed...

This dataset consists of contours showing the altitude of the top surface of well-consolidated bedrock at the base of the shallow groundwater system in the Lower Gunnison River Basin in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. Bedrock altitude was contoured from values in the raster dataset bralt. The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

The development and the generation of the datasets that are published through this data release, were based on the results and findings of this report: Kohn, M.S. and Patton, T.T., 2018, Flood-Inundation Maps for the South Platte River at Fort Morgan, Colorado, 2018: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2018-5114, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20185114. The geospatial dataset contain final versions of the raster and vector geospatial data and its related metadata, and the model archive dataset contains all relevant files to document and re-run the surface-water hydraulic model that are discussed in the report. Digital flood-inundation maps for a 4.5-mile reach of the South Platte River at...

This point dataset contains water-level information concerning depth to water, potentiometric-surface altitude, and saturated thickness for the shallow groundwater system at selected well and borehole locations in the Lower Gunnison River Basin in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. Depth-to-water data were compiled from measurements reported by the Colorado Division of Water Resources, U.S. Geological Survey, and Bureau of Reclamation. Potentiometric-surface altitude values were computed from the potentiometric-surface altitude raster dataset (potalt). Saturated-thickness values were computed from the saturated-thickness raster dataset (satthk). The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset...

In 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Upper Colorado River Wild and Scenic Stakeholder Group, studied the magnitude and recurrence interval of streamflow needed to initiate bed movement of gravel-sized and finer sediment in a segment of the Colorado River in Colorado to better understand sediment movement and its relation to flow regimes of the river. Bed movement occurred more frequently and at lower streamflows from State Bridge to Catamount Bridge compared to the study area upstream from State Bridge. Two independent and complementary lines of evidence were collected to detect incipient bed movement. Two stationary hydrophone systems were installed on April 23, 2019 at the above...

The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-11) was passed into law on March 30, 2009. Sub-title F of the law, also known as the SECURE (Science and Engineering to Comprehensively Understand and Responsibly Enhance) Water Act, calls for the establishment of a “national water availability and use assessment program” in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The recommendation for a national assessment of the available water resources was driven by the lack of such an assessment since 1978. In fulfillment of the Act, the USGS developed the National Water Census (NWC), under the auspices of the USGS Water Availability and Use Program, and as part of that activity, among others, collected water withdrawal...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Colorado Springs Utilities, has been collecting topographic data annually since 2012 at 10 study areas along Fountain Creek, Colorado. The 10 study areas are located along Fountain Creek between Colorado Springs and the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River in Pueblo. This data release presents topographic survey data, Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) survey data, elevation rasters, and elevation-change rasters collected or generated in 2022 as part of that monitoring effort. Topographic survey points were collected using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems (RTK-GNSS). These point data, along with lidar point clouds, were used to...
