This data release provides a map of the time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 m (Vs30) for California using the method described by Thompson and others (2014). There are two adjustments to the algorithm described by Thompson and others (2014), which is built on the geology-based Vs30 map by Wills and Clahan (2006). In this data release, we use the Wills and others (2015) updated geology-based Vs30 map. The second change is that we have adjusted the kriging procedure so that measured Vs30 values do not affect the predictions across distinctly different geologic units. July 2022 Update (ver. 2.0) Resolution is now 3 arcseconds instead of 7.5 arcseconds Fixed a code error that prevented some of the Vs30...

This data release consists of an orthophoto of the Tanana River in Alaska acquired on July 24, 2019. The orthophoto was produced from images obtained using a Hasselblad A6D-100C 100 megapixel digital mapping camera deployed within a pod mounted on the landing gear of a Robinson R44 helicopter. Images were acquired as the helicopter transited a series of flight lines designed to provide complete coverage, with ample overlap, of the study area along the Tanana River. Also within the pod was an ATLANS GPS/Inertial Motion Unit (IMU) that recorded the position and orientation of the platform during the flight. This information was used to geo-reference the images by performing aerial triangulation and bundle adjustment...

In 2004, about 90 migrating elk drowned after attempting to cross thin ice on the Mores Creek arm of Lucky Peak Lake upstream of the Highway 21 bridge. To better understand the depths over a range of reservoir pool elevations in the Mores Creek Arm, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Lucky Peak Power Plant Project, conducted high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) bathymetric surveys on the Mores Creek arm on Lucky Peak Lake. The MBES data will assist reservoir managers and wildlife biologists with regulating reservoir water surface elevations (WSE) to support successful big game migration across Mores Creek on Lucky Peak Lake. Data collection provided nearly 100 percent coverage of bed elevations...

The Upper Mississippi River Restoration-Environmental Management Program (UMRR-EMP) partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Region 3 to collect 2010 digital color infrared (CIR) aerial photography of Pools 1-13, Upper Mississippi River and Pools Alton–Marseilles, Illinois River at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS439 digital aerial camera. The photography shall be at a minimum accuracy of 5-10 meters and allow for the development of orthorectified photo mosaics by U.S. Geological Survey – Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (USGS-UMESC) for all or portions of the coverage area. The flights occurred during times of peak vegetation biomass, typically from...

Terrestrial ecosystems are vulnerable to future changes in the global climate, including increased temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and changes in vegetation. Information on the potential effects of climate change on bird communities can help guide effective conservation and inform land management decisions. We used output from MC2, a dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM), and climate models to inform the potential distribution of vegetation types based on hybrid vegetation maps dervied from the GAP vegetation classification system. These hybrid vegetation models were then used to inform bird distribution models0. The data covers three time periods (1970-1999), (2035-2064), and (2070-2099) for 59...

The ecologically-relevant geophysical (ERGo) landforms dataset is a comprehensive classification of landforms based on hillslope position and dominant physical processes that covers most of North America. Four hillslope positions form a natural sequence of topographic units along the catena: ridges/peaks (summits), upper slopes (shoulders), lower slopes (foot slopes), and valley bottoms (toe slopes). The position within each of these hillslopes as a function of solar orientation to reflect how ecological processes (especially soil moisture and evapotranspiration) are influenced by insolation. Also included are very flat (i.e. areas <2°) or very steep (i.e. “cliffs” >50°). We provide these data here at 30 m resolution,...
A continuous 2km raster Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) study area. This DEM was complied for analysis of topographic effects on climate within the GNLCC study area, as a part of the GNLCC Fire Refugia Project. Stream flow in the Colorado River and Dolores River corridors has been significantly modified by water management, and continued flow alteration is anticipated in future decades with projected increases in human water demand. Bottomland vegetation has been altered as well, with invasion of non-native species, increases in wildfire and human disturbance, and currently, rapid shifts in riparian communities due to biological and mechanical tamarisk control efforts. In light of these conditions, land managers are in need of scientific information to support management of vegetation communities for values such as healthy populations of sensitive fish and wildlife species and human recreation. We propose to address these...
