The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program, through its Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element, collected aerial imagery of the systemic Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) during the summer of 2020. A Land Cover/Land Use (LCU) spatial database was developed based on the 2020 aerial imagery, which adds a fourth systemic-wide database to the existing 1989, 2000, and 2010/11 LCU databases. While a crosswalk was used to update the 1989 LCU database (originally developed using a different classification system), the 2000, 2010/11, and 2020 LCU databases share the same classification, making them directly comparable from a classification standpoint. Furthermore, protocols...

Publicly accessible open spaces provide valuable opportunities for people to exercise, play, socialize, and build community. People are more likely to use public open spaces that are close (ideally within walking distance) to their homes. To assess the spatial distribution of access to open space for recreation in the southeastern United States, we constructed an index of open space access based on the size of the largest publicly accessible open space within 10 miles of each point on the landscape, using three distance categories to represent whether people can reach the open spaces by walking (within 0.5 mile), via a short drive (within 3 miles), or via a longer drive (within 10 miles). Using the open space access...

This dataset represents results from this study attributed to the NHDPlus V2 catchments. Changes in climate occurring throughout the Mississippi River Basin are expected to lead to additional impacts in stream habitats and fish assemblages in multiple ways, including changing changing thermal properties and flow regimes. To manage streams for current impacts and future changes, managers need region-wide information for decision-making and developing proactive management strategies. Our project provides a suite of climate metrics that have been found to be relevant to the distribution and population structure of aquatic organisms in freshwater stream networks. These results provide natural resource managers, decision-makers,...

This data release contains monthly 270-meter resolution Basin Characterization Model (BCMv8) climate and hydrologic variables for Localized Constructed Analog (LOCA; Pierce et al., 2014)-downscaled ACCESS 1.0 Global Climate Model (GCM) for Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 (medium-low emissions) and 8.5 (high emissions) for hydrologic California. The LOCA climate scenarios span water years 1950 to 2099 with greenhouse-gas forcings beginning in 2006. The LOCA downscaling method has been shown to produce better estimates of extreme events and reduces the common downscaling problem of too many low-precipitation days (Pierce et al., 2014). Ten GCMs were selected from the full ensemble of models from the...

Summary: This directory contains a second version of the mosaics of the 2-dimensional (2D) surface strain fields of the 2019 Mw7.1 and Mw6.4 Ridgecrest earthquakes derived from optical correlation. These results are derived through a modification to the inversion approach described in Barnhart et al. 2020 (Nature Geoscience) wherein we remove the UTM reference frame when building the Green’s function that is incorporated into the inversion for the displacement gradient tensor. The removal of the reference frame has the effect of improving the condition number of the Green’s function and making the inversion more stable. The mosaics are in UTM Zone 11N coordinates with 10m spatial resolution. Each file is in units...
This dataset is the product of a geospatial interpolation using groundwater-level data obtained from a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) synoptic survey of 129 groundwater wells in Fauquier County from October 29 through November 2, 2018 and selected points from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) to represent a continuous groundwater-level altitude surface. Methodology is detailed in USGS SIR 2022-5014 "Groundwater-level contour map of Fauquier County, Virginia, October - November 2018." The raster surface has a horizontal grid spacing of 98.43 feet (30 meters). Raster values represent groundwater-level altitude in decimal feet. Horizontal coordinates are referenced to the geographic coordinate system North American...

The timing of life-history events in many plants and animals depend on specific environmental conditions that fluctuate with seasonal conditions. Climate change is altering environmental regimes and disrupting natural cycles and patterns across communities. Anadromous fishes that migrate between marine and freshwater habitats to spawn are particularly sensitive to shifting environmental conditions, and thus are vulnerable to the effects of climate change. However, for many anadromous fish species the specific environmental mechanisms driving migration and spawning patterns are not well understood. The data in this release are a supplement to the publication Legett et al. (2021). Daily patterns of river herring (Alosa...

THE CHICKASAW NATION HOSTED THIS RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM ON MARCH 22-24, 2022, HELD AT THE CHICKASAW RETREAT AND CONFERENCE CENTER IN SULPHUR, OK. After the Climate Workshop for The Chickasaw Nation in 2019, the Tribal managers discussed the need to include culture in conservation efforts and decided to seek a grant for culturally significant plants. This event was organized and led by the Chickasaw Nation and was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey through the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. There were 106 attendees with 75 Native representatives from 21 different tribes. There were 11 student attendees. Attendees came from all across the United States including Maine, New York, Michigan, Montana,...

These bat location estimates have been reported by Bogan and others (In press) and come in the form of a GIS shape file. Three species of nectar-feeding phyllostomid bats migrate north from Mexico into deserts of the United States (U.S.) each spring and summer to feed on blooms of columnar cacti and century plants (Agave spp). However, the habitat needs of these important desert pollinators are poorly understood. We followed the nighttime movements of two species of long-nosed bats (Leptonycteris yerbabuenae and L. nivalis) in an area of late-summer sympatry at the northern edges of their migratory ranges. We radiotracked bats in extreme southwestern New Mexico during 22 nights over two summers and acquired location...

This sampling frame is a set of grid-based finite-area frames spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The grid for the United States is broken into individual grids for the continental United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Alaska is combined with Canada into a single grid. Each country/state/territory extent consists of four nested sampling grids at 50x50km, 10x10km, 5x5km, and 1x1km resolutions. The original 10x10km continental United States grid was developed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture for use in the interagency “Bat Grid” monitoring program in the Pacific Northwest and was expanded across Canada, the United States, and Mexico for the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat)....

Communication antenna towers registered with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's Antenna Structure Registration (ASR) program. The FCC requires that all towers >200 ft tall and towers <200 ft that are positioned in the glide path of an airport be registered with the FCC ASR program. Therefore, this data set does not necessarily depict all communication antennas actually present on the landscape. The source data are updated weekly by the FCC as new permits are issued. However, this data set is designed for a specific analysis, and is planned to remain static as of the publication date (11/06/2003).

A common workflow in geospatial hydrology is to interpolate geospatial values from one set of polygonal zonal features to another. This can be a computational and time consuming undertaking. This data release provides an easier, faster, and less computationally intensive way, to get a close estimate of the values needed. In the figure below, the red polygon represents a feature where data is needed from the two blue polygons. By using the amount of overlap between the two blue polygons, data for the red polygon can be estimated by rescaling those attributes with a simple weighted mean or other aggregation methods that make sense for the data in question. The files listed in this child item contain a series of...
Recreational birding is a popular activity in the United States. To assess the spatial distribution of recreational birding in the southeast, we combined two data sources: eBird (Sullivan et al. 2009) and the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-associated Recreation (NSFHWAR; US Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Department of Commerce 2011). We used spatial birding data from eBird to distribute the state-level NSFHWAR birding data by county and land protection status. This information was used to identify priority counties for conservation of birding areas. These are counties with a high level of birding activity where at least 90% of birding activity takes place on unprotected...
