The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected hydroacoustic data of the St. Croix River adjacent to the Osceola (WI) boat ramp for hydrographic and benthic mapping prior to the reconstruction project implemented by the National Park Service (NPS). This dataset contains predicted geologic substrate information that was interpreted from combined sonar datasets. The shapefile contains a general description of interpreted surficial bottom type with its associated class code in the attribute table. Benthic substrate maps provide important physical characteristics that can be used in habitat modeling to guide management planning of restoration and conservation efforts.

Coastal and estuarian wetlands in the Great Lakes Basin are increasingly impacted by habitat degradation, invasive species, and most recently (late 2010's), increased water levels. These wetlands act as an important buffer between the open lake and the near-shore areas, as key areas for nutrient cycling, as critical nurseries for many species of lake fish, and as habitat for numerous species of concern. Understanding how the cover and composition of these wetlands has changed over time is critical to making informed management decisions. By using both historical documents and imagery, multiple historic maps of wetland coverage were created in GIS to compare over time and to current maps and imagery of these critical...

The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has created high-resolution land cover/use data sets for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Aerial images of Pools 1-13 Upper Mississippi River System and Pools, Alton-Marseilles, Illinois River were collected in color infrared (CIR) in August of 2010 at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. In August 2011, CIR aerial images of Pools 14-Open River South, Upper Mississippi River and Pools Dresden-Lockport, Illinois River were collected at 16”/pixel with the same camera. The CIR aerial images were interpreted and automated using a 31-class LTRM vegetation classification....

The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has created high-resolution land cover/use data sets for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) from 1:15,000-scale color infrared aerial photos. These data have been used to create a variety of products, one of which is a data set used to classify aquatic areas. The 1989 and 1991 aquatic areas data sets were created by first generalizing the available land cover/use data into a land/water data set, then reinterpreting the aerial photography within the areas classified as water to determine the type of aquatic area. Area coverage for this data set is the Upper Mississippi River between Minneapolis, MN and Cairo, IL, and the Illinois...

The shapefiles depict the 2D HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling domains used for the simulations described in the associated publication. Model domains were delineated in the HEC-RAS geometry editor to encompass river-valley bottoms and adjacent hillslopes of four river reaches of contrasting contributing area and morphology: Seneca Creek at Dawsonville, MD; Patapsco River at Woodstock, MD; Patuxent River at Unity, MD; and Little Gunpowder Falls at Laurel Brook, MD.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected hydroacoustic data of the St. Croix River adjacent to the Osceola (WI) boat ramp for hydrographic and benthic mapping prior to the reconstruction project implemented by the National Park Service (NPS). This dataset contains reference locations that were obtained while collecting ground-truth information for geologic substrate. For statistical analysis, the locations were selected using random point sampling. The shapefile contains sample location coordinates, a general description of interpreted surficial sediment type, and an indication of mussel presence/absence in the attribute table. These geospatial locations directly correspond to the "still-images" dataset.

The shapefiles depict the valley bottom areas over which HEC-RAS model results were summarized. Valley bottoms were manually delineated in ArcMap by visually interpreting LIDAR terrain models and aerial imagery. Substantial changes in elevation, curvature, and slope were interpreted within the context of their position within the study reach to be channel banks and valley walls. Such areas were excluded from the valley bottom delineation.
Hydroacoustic (sonar) data were collected for the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Minnesota Rivers for the development of high-resolution bathymetry and sidescan imagery. Small areas containing priority mussel habitat had additional collection efforts to map water velocities and bottom composition. Combining these data in a GIS can provide key components to characterizing physical benthic habitat for native mussels in a riverine environment. This information is highly desired by the National Park Service to more accurately assess environmental factors that influence native mussel distribution. The collaborative effort was funded by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) Environment and Natural...

The USGS developed the second in a series of informative spatial distribution datasets of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the western basin of Lake Erie. The second dataset was developed by object-based image analysis of high-resolution imagery (US waters < 6 meters deep) collected during peak biomass in 2018 to allow assessments of changes in SAV distribution. Assessing SAV abundance may contribute to inform the long-term impacts of Grass Carp, Common Carp, eutrophication, wind fetch and sedimentation on vegetation communities throughout Lake Erie and the impact these stressors may have on other organisms in the ecosystem. These data may also help inform the deployment of toxic bait deployments targeting...

We applied Zequanox using a custom-engineered, boat mounted application system to replicated 0.30 Hectare plots within a small inland lake. The objectives of these applications were to determine if uncontained, open-water Zequanox applications could effectively control zebra mussel populations and protect native unionid mussel populations within zebra mussel infested systems. The datasets included are as follows: Exposure Water Chemistry Hardness and Alkalinity Native Mussel Sonde Water Chemistry Zebra Mussel Density Zebra Mussel Length Zebra Mussel Mortality Zequanox Concentration ShapeFiles: PLOTS, UNIONID, ZEQUANOX CONCENTRATION, ZM_DENSITY, ZM_MORTALITY
