The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies will use, combine and optimize an array of remote sensing techniques to identify the most efficient process that characterizes grasslands and level of shrub component in those grasslands. The project will classify a pilot area, the Janos Grassland Priority Conservation Area, which contains the majority of the Janos Biosphere Reserve, using a variety of remote sensing approaches. In the process they will identify the best techniques for decomposing grass-shrub intermix at low densities and identify the best approaches for large scale application of remote sensing to classify the desert grasslands and shrublands.

In the desert southwest biodiversity is facing a changing landscape due to human population growth, expansion of energy development, and from the persistent effects of climate change among other threats. The 2012 Desert LCC science needs document recognized the importance of modeling and predicting habitat area, fragmentation and corridor network connectivity for a broad range of wildlife taxa. Tools and methods from conservation planning are available to address some of these issues, but tools to evaluate the expected benefits of corridors in mitigating climate change effects are only in their infancy. This USGS project will use quantitative spatial analysis and principles from landscape ecology to determine where...

These heatmaps show a top 3 invasive animal stressor for grasslands in the Chihuahuan Desert, as ranked by participants, and the concentration of participants who reported as working in each municipality or county who also voted for that stressor across the landscape. Symbology represents the percentage of participants with 0% = dark green, 0.0001 % - 24.99% = light green, 25% - 49.99% = yellow, 50% - 74.99% = orange, 75% - 100% = red. All counties and municipalities identified by participants as areas where they work were given a tally for each of the top 3 stressors that participants chose. Counties with a small number of participants were not adjusted for small sample size. These results were shared via a webinar...

A vented water-level logger was installed at site MC1 (N 47° 05’ 12.2”/W 122° 43’ 36.8”) and continuously measured water depth and temperature at 15-minute intervals from Nov 22, 2016 to Sept 6, 2017 (288 days). This site is tidally influenced and located 1.12 km from the mouth of McAllister Creek. Elevation (NAVD88) of the water surface above the sensor was surveyed by RTN-GPS. The offset to convert all water depth time-series data to water surface elevation (NAVD88) is -1.052 m. Water depth ranged from 0.69 to 4.88 m. Temperature ranged from 2.8 to 22.5 degrees C.
A point layer of sites known to be useful analogs for planetary science, such as impact craters, dunes, volcanoes, and other processes observed on bodies across the solar system.

Four boreholes (MW1, MW1UZ, MW2, MW2.1) were drilled in the fall of 2017 and summer of 2018 in upper Redwell Basin, a headwater catchment underlain by hydrothermally altered sedimentary rock in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The boreholes were continuously cored using a wireline HQ-sized coring system and sample a combination of Quaternary-aged surficial colluvium and the Cretaceous-aged Mesaverde Formation. In-situ injection-based hydraulic tests were performed in MW1 and MW2 during drilling while advancing using a single-packer apparatus in tandem with an in-line flow meter and interval pressure monitoring. Borehole geophysical logging was performed in MW1, MW1UZ, and MW2.1 in the...

The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management launched the Shoreline Change Project in 1989 to identify erosion-prone areas of the coast and support local land-use decisions. Trends of shoreline position over long and short-term timescales provide information to landowners, managers, and potential buyers about possible future impacts to coastal resources and infrastructure. In 2001, a 1994 shoreline was added to calculate both long- and short-term shoreline change rates along ocean-facing sections of the Massachusetts coast. In 2013 two oceanfront shorelines for Massachusetts were added using 2008-2009 color aerial orthoimagery and 2007 topographic lidar datasets obtained from NOAA's Ocean Service, Coastal...

The fence, an east to west boundary animals must attempt to fight their way through this non-wildlife friendly fence, increasing their opportunity to become entangled in the fence. With the conversion of this 3 miles of sheep and barbed wire to wildlife friendly fencing, animal migration will be improved so death and injuries associated with the existing fence will be reduced.
A test to see if an uploaded shapefile could be used as a Custom Extent in a subsequent query to find USGS DEM data along a user-defined multi-part polygon. This item was created from an uploaded shapefile provided by Ethan Gibney (NOAA National Hurricane Center - Storm Surge Unit). I was added as a Custom Extent in the ScienceBase Footprinter which created a extent with ID=3443874 which can then be used in a ScienceBase advanced search like this: https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/items?q=&filter=tags=National+Elevation+Dataset+(NED)+1/3+arc-second&filter=extentQuery=3443874&offset=0&max=20 The above query is limited to only 20 items (so a map display is visible) and the format is simply an HTML listing...

This project will provide sanitation and thinning of about 50 acres in 2010 (approximately 250 acres total through 2014) to enhance the white bark pine stand on Commissary Ridge, which is the southernmost white bark pine stand in Wyoming. The area has mature and young stands of white bark and limber pine. The mature trees have extensive 70+% mountain pine beetle infestation with a new infection of white pine blister rust. The project would remove diseased white bark and limber pine reduce the spread of mountain pine beetle and white pine blister rust to enable the younger aged cohorts to survive. FHP report has been done. White bark pine is an important tree species for wildlife. The area has mature and young stands...

The banding data provides a comprehensive list of where and when each of the 21 golden eagles were captured, tagged (all satellite-tagged, some also radio-tagged) and deployed. The banding data is organized into a spreadsheet (Banding_Records.csv) that provides basic information on each bird as well as any notes about recaptures or deaths. The Capture_Sheets.pdf is a supplemental document that provides more detailed biological and spatiotemporal information about 15 of the tagged individuals. Individual golden eagles can be identified across the three datasets with their unique and consistent PTT numbers.

The satellite data consist of 9,253 estimated locations of 21 golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) that were satellite-tagged in either east-central Idaho (Salmon, Idaho) or southwestern Idaho (Snake River National Conservation Area) and tracked between 1993 and 1997 via the Argos satellite system. The raw eagle tracking data provided by Argos were filtered one time using a version of the Douglas Argos-Filter Algorithm and converted into XLS spreadsheet form. This preservation project preserved the geospatial and satellite information from the XLS spreadsheet and released it in shapefile format (Satellite_Data.shp) and CSV format (Satellite_Data.csv). Each tagged bird in this dataset has a unique PTT number that is...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), has constructed a new spatially distributed Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) for the Merced River Basin (Koczot and others, 2021), which is a tributary of the San Joaquin River in California. PRMS is a deterministic, distributed-parameter, physical-process-based modeling system developed to evaluate the response of streamflow and basin hydrology to various combinations of climate and land use (Markstrom and others, 2015). Although further refinement may be required to apply the Merced PRMS for official streamflow forecast operations, this application of PRMS is calibrated with intention to simulate (and...

Our model is a full-annual-cycle population model {hostetler2015full} that tracks groups of bat surviving through four seasons: breeding season/summer, fall migration, non-breeding/winter, and spring migration. Our state variables are groups of bats that use a specific maternity colony/breeding site and hibernaculum/non-breeding site. Bats are also accounted for by life stages (juveniles/first-year breeders versus adults) and seasonal habitats (breeding versus non-breeding) during each year, This leads to four states variable (here depicted in vector notation): the population of juveniles during the non-breeding season, the population of adults during the non-breeding season, the population of juveniles during the...
Aerial photographs for Pools 1-13 Upper Mississippi River System and Pools, Alton-Marseilles, Illinois River were collected in color infrared (CIR) in August of 2010 at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. In August 2011, CIR aerial photographs for Pools 14-Open River South, Upper Mississippi River and Pools Dresden-Lockport, Illinois River were collected at 16”/pixel with the same camera. All CIR aerial photos were orthorectified, mosaicked, compressed, and served via the UMESC Internet site. The CIR aerial photos were interpreted and automated using a 31-class LTRMP vegetation classification. The 2010/11 LCU databases were prepared by or under the supervision...
