Documented in this data release are data used to model and map the probability of arsenic being greater than 10 micrograms per liter in private domestic wells throughout the conterminous United States during drought conditions (Lombard and others, 2020). The model used to predict the probability of arsenic exceeding 10 micrograms per liter in private domestic wells was previously developed and documented by Ayotte and others (2017). Independent variables in the model include groundwater recharge and annual precipitation. In order to assess the impact of drought these variables were altered to simulate drought by reducing the 30-year average annual values by 25 and 50 percent. The impact of drought was also assessed...

These shapefiles represent the spatial distribution of mean annual groundwater recharge, in inches, for Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Maui, and the Island of Hawaiʻi for a set of water-budget scenarios that characterize unique combinations of drought and land-cover conditions. Two water-budget scenarios were developed to quantify the effects of severe drought and future climate conditions on groundwater recharge for each island as follows: (1) rainfall conditions representative of the driest conditions during 1920–2012 and 2020 land cover, and (2) rainfall conditions representative of the driest conditions during a future dry-climate condition and 2020 land cover. Each drought condition was combined with two hypothetical...

These shapefiles represent the frequency characteristics of soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and climatic water deficit for Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Maui, and the Island of Hawaiʻi for a set of water-budget scenarios that characterize unique combinations of rainfall and land-cover conditions. Four water-budget scenarios were developed to quantify the effects of drought on soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and climatic water deficit for each island as follows: (1) a reference condition, the Non-Drought scenario, consisting of rainfall conditions during 1990–97 and 2003–06 and 2020 land cover, (2) rainfall conditions representative of the driest periods during 1920–2012 and 2020 land cover, (3) rainfall conditions...

Extreme climate events– such as hurricanes, droughts, ice storms, extreme precipitation, and wildfires– have the potential to cause large changes in watershed processes, response, and function. A five-year post-wildfire study of stream chemistry in the Colorado Front Range USA, enabled the analysis of the effects these events have water quality, which is published in the journal article Murphy, S.F., McCleskey, R.B., Martin, D.A., Writer, J.H., and Ebel, B.A., in review, Fire, flood, and drought: Extreme climate events alter flowpaths and stream chemistry: JGR-Biogeosciences. That article describes how extreme climate events altered concentration-discharge relations in ways that elucidate hydrologic flow paths and...

Discrete volumetric and mid-section stream discharge measurements were conducted from July through October 2020 in H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest near Blue River, OR. The measured streams are part of the Lookout Creek basin, draining into Blue River and subsequently the McKenzie River on the west slope of the Cascade Range. ORWSC Streamflow measurements supplemented an eco-drought low-flow modeling project in partnership with the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC) and the USGS Water Mission Area (WMA). Measurements were collected at 25 selected sites with co-located HOBO data loggers and 7 miscellaneous (MISC) sites with no data loggers present. HOBO logger data were collected and processed...

Fish in Northern Great Plains streams evolved to survive heat, cold, floods and drought; however changes in streamflow associated with long-term climate change may render some prairie streams uninhabitable for current fish species. To better understand future hydrology of these prairie streams, the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) model and output from the RegCM3 Regional Climate model were used to simulate streamflows for seven watersheds in eastern and central Montana, for a baseline period (water years 1982 - 1999) and three future periods: water years 2021 -2038, 2046 - 2063, and 2071 - 2088. These PRMS model input and output data are intended to accompany a journal article (Chase et al., 2016); they...

This data release describes one (1) Microsoft Excel table of lumped parameter models of groundwater age for groundwater discharging to the South Loup River, Nebraska. The table (LPMAgeResults) includes final models of groundwater age and metrics by calibration of lumped parameter models to tracer concentrations using TracerLPM software (Jurgens and others, 2012). Interpreted results presented here were used to guide hydrologic interpretations of groundwater sources and flow paths of groundwater discharging to the South Loup River, NE.
Supplementary data for studies conducted in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF), eastern Puerto Rico include measurements of temperature, relative humidity and cloud immersion at 30-minute resolution. Temperature and relative humidity were measured at five sites; two primary sites have records from March 2014 to June 2019; other sites have shorter records within that period. From these data, derived values of dew point, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and evaporative fraction were calculated. Daily 13:00 temperature and VPD gradients with elevation along the windward forested slope were calculated using the 2 primary sites from from March 2014 to November 2014, then on days with data from at least 3 of the 5...

The shapefiles in this dataset represent the spatial distribution of mean annual water-budget components, in inches, for Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Maui, and the Island of Hawaiʻi, for a set of recent and future climate conditions, and 2020 land cover. The four main climate scenarios used in the water-budget analyses include a reference climate scenario representative of recent conditions during 1978–2007, hereinafter the 1978–2007 scenario, and three downscaled future-climate projections that span a range of future-climate conditions for each island. The three future-climate projections include (1) a mid-century scenario using projected rainfall conditions representative of phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison...

Declining phytoplankton biomass and the resulting stress on the food web has been suggested as one contributor to the decline of Delta Smelt and other fish species in the San Francisco Bay (SFB) and the Sacramento San Joaquin River Delta. Filter feeding by two species of bivalves, Corbicula fluminea and Potamocorbula amurensis, has been shown to control phytoplankton growth rate in the SFB and Delta and both are thought to be partially responsible for the reduction in food for pelagic species. Phytoplankton growth rate is dependent on spatially and temporally varying nutrient concentrations, light availability, transport time, and pelagic and benthic grazing losses. Bivalve grazing has the potential to limit primary...

Water used for hydraulic fracturing treatments in and near the Williston Basin during 2000-2015, was estimated using data reported in IHS Markit (TM) (2016). Hydraulic fracturing treatment data from IHS Markit (TM) (2016) may include volumes in a variety of measurement units, and they may include multiple treatments per well. All listed treatments within the study area were converted to gallons and summed on a per-well basis, discounting any treatments for which the specified measurement units were unclear (for example, “sacks”, or “feet”), which were minor. Of 3,734,380 treatments listed within the study area during the timeframe of interest, 0.7% (26,373 records) were not included. For each well, the date listed...

Water supply lakes are the primary source of water for many communities in northern and western Missouri. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of lake capacity are important for managing and predicting adequate water supply. Many of the water supply lakes in Missouri were previously surveyed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the early 2000s (Richards, 2013) and in 2013 (Huizinga, 2014); however, years of potential sedimentation may have resulted in reduced water storage capacity. Periodic bathymetric surveys are useful to update the area/capacity table and to determine changes in the bathymetric surface. Monroe Lake B (Monroe City South) is a water supply lake used by the city of Monroe City in northeastern...

A dataset of well information and geospatial data was developed for 426 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) observation wells in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. An extensive list of attributes is included about each well, its location, and water-level history to provide the public and water-resources community with comprehensive information on the USGS well network in New England and data available from these sites. These data may be useful for evaluating groundwater conditions and variability across the region. The well list and site attributes, which were extracted from USGS National Water Information System (NWIS), represent all of the active wells in the New England network...
