Understanding the current risk of the threat of invasive annual grasses to the sagebrush ecosystem is needed for biological planning and conservation design of appropriate conservation delivery mechanisms that will enhance and maintain priority wildlife species of conservation concern. Current efforts with partners have developed a 250 m near-real time herbaceous annual percent cover map in western portion of the ecosystem for identifying wildfire risk but this effort needs to be expanded to the eastern portion of the biome. Identify, gather, and combine available data sets throughout the MR, Mississippi River, and their tributaries to develop a range-wide species status assessments to support USFWS 12 month findings for Sicklefin and Sturgeon Chub. Evaluate and analyze the combined data sets for potential relationships between system drivers (e.g., chub populations and annual hydrologic and water temperature changes, presence of low-head dams, point and non-point source water quality, dredging, water intakes, etc.). The overarching goal of the project was to develop overlapping conceptual models of environmental and community health indicators in reference to climate forecasts. The sensitivity of species and habitats to climate were cross-walked with recently developed Coast Salish community health indicators (e.g. ceremonial use, knowledge exchange, and physiological well-being) in order to demonstrate how Indigenous Knowledge can be used in conjunction with established landscape-level conservation indicators (e.g. shellfish and water-quality) and employed to identify resource management priorities. FY2011Thousands of data points have been collected by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Nevada Division of Wildlife from the 1950s to the present describing the distribution of declining native redband and endangered Lahontan cutthroat trout, and the invasive, nonnative brown and brook trout. USGS analyzed this data to understand the climate-related changes to species distributions and model extinction risk. The results, submittedfor publication, will be used by the State of Oregon as it drafts conservation plans for redband trout and by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection in drafting water quality criteria to protect and monitor the states coldwater fisheries.

FY2015Study the wildlife impacts of the Bruneau-Owyhee Sage-grouse Habitat (BOSH) project. (The removal of approximately 600,000 acres of western juniper across a landscape of ~1.5 million acres over the next generation in an attempt to reverse sage-grouse habitat loss caused by woodland encroachment.) The Conservation Efforts Database (CED) is in the process of collecting information related to conservation efforts implemented in the sagebrush biome. This data will predominantly covers the time from 2009-2018. It is our hope to utilize this information and partner with USGS to investigate if/how these efforts are related to greater sage-grouse population trends being developed as part of a larger Population Monitoring Framework that FWS is involved with. Results of this evaluation would help inform which populations/areas may be receiving a larger conservation benefit from action implemented as well as if changes in trends are related to conservation efforts or other environmental factors. Native fish of the Columbia River Basin, and the ecosystems that support them, are an innate and critical part of Nez Perce culture. The persistence of these fisheries may be at risk due to climate change, especially in combination with other stressors (e.g., habitat fragmentation and disconnectivity). Assessing vulnerability of these fisheries to climate change, considering options for action, and taking action will require strategic collaboration and coordination with multiple partners. FY2013“The loss of big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) on sites disturbed by fire has motivated many restoration seeding and planting efforts. However, the resulting sagebrush establishment is often lower than desired, especially in dry areas. Existing stream temperature data were compiled from numerous federal, state, tribal, and private sources to develop an integrated regional database. Spatial statistical models for river networks were applied to these data to develop an accurate model that predicts stream temperature for all fish-bearing streams in the US portion of the GNLCC. We propose a regional assessment of aquatic species vulnerabilities and responses to climate change as the basis for adaptive management for aquatic ecosystems in the Great Northern LCC, using the Transboundary Flathead Ecosystem as a case example. In FY11, this effort will extend LCMAP to allow users to generate dynamic interactive map viewers, modeled output, and web services for use in ArcExplorer and other client tools. The goal of this study is to use eDNA as a cost effective tool for documenting the occurrence and distribution of ESA-listed spring-chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) throughout the Okanogan and Methow watersheds in an effort to map habitat use and connectivity. Our approach will use eDNA to detect low density spring-chinook in filtered water samples to inventory distribution and re-colonization of tributaries at strategically-sampled points throughout entire stream networks. This approach will provide one of the first applications of eDNA technology for monitoring distribution of native fish species of conservation concern. The goal of the Conservation Efforts Database is to efficiently and effectively collect and analyze ongoing conservation efforts for unlisted, candidate, and listed species alike. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has been petitioned to list the regal fritillary butterfly under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) with decision due in FY 2022. Population and species viability are directly related to genetic diversity, yet direct measures of genetic diversity are rare for any species, let alone a species of conservation concern. Previous research revealed regal fritillary populations show a reduction in genetic diversity from west to east, as potential habitat patches become smaller and more isolated. This project will complete a tribally-based climate change vulnerability assessment t and adaptation plan for Eulachon that spawn in the Chilkoot and Chilkat rivers near Haines, Alaska. Local monitoring will collect data on spawning populations in the Chilkoot River, and a tribal stakeholder group will be convened to analyze climate change projections, apply traditional knowledge, rank climate vulnerabilities, and prioritized adaptation strategies.
