The Yukon River Basin, underlain by discontinuous permafrost, has experienced a warming climate over the last century that has altered air temperature, precipitation, and permafrost. We investigated a water chemistry database from 1982 to 2014 for the Yukon River and its major tributary, the Tanana River. Significant increases of Ca, Mg, and Na annual flux were found in both rivers. Additionally, SO4 and P annual flux increased in the Yukon River. No annual trends were observed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from 2001 to 2014. In the Yukon River, Mg and SO4 flux increased throughout the year, while some of the most positive trends for Ca, Mg, Na, SO4, and P flux occurred during the fall and winter months. Both...

During the 2012 field season, the Central Alaska Network (CAKN) Stream Monitoring Program made 130 site visits to 58 unique stream sites across the network (Figure 1), with each site being sampled one to five times from early May through late September. The data collected included instantaneous water chemistry, stream flow, water chemistry samples, macroinvertebrates, benthic diatoms, stable isotope samples, habitat data and environmental DNA samples. Continuous year-round temperature monitoring at 23 sites across the network is ongoing. "Regional land use planning in the Yukon has a long and unfortunate history of failed efforts. Under Chapter 11 of the Yukon First Nations Umbrella Final Agreement, a new process for planning has been in place since 1993. Through qualitative, interview-based research, I explore possible factors that either hinder or facilitate successful planning. I used the North Yukon regional land use planning effort as a case study example of the first plan to be successfully approved in Yukon history. This report contains water-quality and sediment-quality data from samples collected in the Yukon River Basin from March through September during the 2005 water year (WY). Samples were collected throughout the year at five stations in the basin (three on the main stem Yukon River, one each on the Tanana and Porcupine Rivers). A broad range of physical, chemical, and biological analyses are presented. During the past 30 years bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus ) populations have declined in various watersheds across their range. The decline has been attributed to loss of habitat, over harvesting, habitat disturbance from resource development activities, and interaction with exotic species. The declining population trends observed over the past three decades suggest that this species is sensitive to impacts. In response to these declines, bull trout are listed as "Threatened" in the United States and "Sensitive" in Alberta, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory. Pilfering is thought to play a role in the evolution of scatter-hoarding strategies; but is not well understood in larder-hoarding animals. I studied intraspecific pilfering in red squirrels in Kluane, YT, Canada. The purpose of this project was to estimate the natural rate of cache pilferage, and to examine variation in pilfering behaviour. Results from experimental removal of territory owners, suggested that younger squirrels with smaller food caches were more likely to pilfer when given the opportunity. Survival over-winter was dependent on the number of cones cached and pilfering squirrels were less likely to survive. The identification of clear-sky and cloudy pixels is a key step in the processing of satellite observations. This is equally important for surface and cloud-atmosphere applications. In this paper, the Separation of Pixels Using Aggregated Rating over Canada (SPARC) algorithm is presented, a new method of pixel identification for image data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on board the NOAA satellites. The SPARC algorithm separates image pixels into clear-sky and cloudy categories based on a specially designed rating scheme. A mask depicting snow/ice and cloud shadows is also generated. It also examines how economic development, which has long focused on non-renewable natural resources, particularly minerals, has grown to an enormous scale.
