This dataset is focused on alpine plant species presence/absence, species turnover, and trends in species abundance on four mountain summits in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. This dataset consists of data from 2019, the fourth survey of the project which is on a five year survey schedule. Two summit sites were established in 2003 on Dancing Lady and Bison Mountain, east of the continental divide. Two additional summit sites were established in 2004 on Pitamakin and Mt. Seward, also east of the continental divide. This multi-summit approach to monitoring alpine plant species follows the protocols of the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA) that were initiated by the University...

This dataset contains information about 58 hatchling Burmese pythons collected in 2015 from an invasive population in southern Florida. These hatchlings were used in an experiment that assessed the effects of food availability, clutch, and sex on their growth in captivity. The hatchlings were collected as eggs from the nests of two wild pythons, assigned to High or Low feeding treatments, and their growth and meal consumption were monitored for 12 weeks. The dataset includes their hatch dates, feeding treatment groups, clutch designations, sex, weekly morphometric measurements, feeding activity, and feeding behavior.
This investigation sought to characterize the shedding of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) in two populations of Columbia River Basin (CRB) Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Juvenile spring- and fall-run Chinook salmon were exposed by immersion to each of three IHN virus strains from the UC, MD, and L subgroups, and then monitored for viral shedding from individual fish for 30 days. Detectable quantities of UC, MD and L IHN virus were shed by a subset of fish from each host population (1–9 out of 10 fish total in each treatment group). Viral shedding kinetics were consistent, with a rapid onset of shedding, peak shedding by 2–3 days, and then a rapid decline to below detectable levels by 7...

Geophysical measurements and related field data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) site in Interior Alaska from 2018 to 2020 to characterize subsurface thermal and hydrologic conditions along a permafrost thaw gradient. The APEX site is managed by the Bonanza Creek LTER (Long Term Ecological Research). Nine instrument sites were established in April 2018, seven of which were given a borehole approximately 2.3 meters (m) deep for repeat nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging to quantify unfrozen water content and soil properties in the near surface. NMR data were collected from each borehole a total of ten times between April 2018 and October 2020, at a...

Nine instrument sites were established in April 2018 and initially comprised a buried seismic station for continuous passive recording of the seismic wavefield, and seven of the nine sites were given a borehole for repeat nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging. Between June 2018 and September 2019, measurements of active-layer thaw depth were regularly recorded...

We present two tabular digital data files representing values related how the presence of hetero- and conspecifics influence nest and chick survival for two listed migratory species breeding on the Missouri River; piping plover (Charadrius melodus) and least tern (Sternula antillarum). We followed 2,507 piping plover nests, 3,251 uniquely banded piping plover chicks, 1,060 least tern nests, and 1,377 uniquely banded least tern chicks from 2007 - 2009, 2012- 2016 in the Northern Great Plains of the US. This included river and reservoir habitats present on the Missouri River in North and South Dakota. Not all study areas were studied in all years. The nest survival dataset includes values for use with the Shaffer...

This is a spatially-explicit state-and-transition simulation model of buffelgrass dynamics in Saguaro National Park, AZ. Buffelgrass is an invasive grass spreading in the park. The model represents uninvaded and invaded parts of the desert ecosystem and includes a connection to a fire behavior model. The model was built using the ST-Sim software platform linked to the FARSITE fire behavior model. The St-SIM file structure includes three components: 1) Buffelgrass.ssim.input folder that houses the input files used by St-SIM, 2) the Buffelgrass.ssim.output folder which houses the scenario outputs used by St-SIM for visualization and export of data, and 3) Buffelgrass.ssim file which is opened by St-SIM to provide...
This data set is an amalgamation of records of marine and coastal species occurrence in the Boston Harbor. Taxon include marine mammals, shorebirds, fish, marine invertebrates, and marine macro algae. The earliest record acquired was from 1861. Records span through 2020. These data were collected to evaluate if arrowweed (Pluchea sericea) individuals and genotypes collected from across a 5.3 degree Celsius temperature gradient and grown in a common greenhouse environment had different physiological and morphological responses to inundation. The objectives of the study were to assess if 1) individuals from climatically different provenances differ in their morphological and physiological phenotypes, 2) individuals from climatically different provenances differ in their response to inundation, and 3) phenotypes and inundation responses are partially controlled by genotype. These data represent measurements made on 248 plants that were grown in a greenhouse and, also in a greenhouse...
This data release contains the concentration results for basic water-quality constituent class parameters (water temperature, pH, turbidity, and specific conductance), total nitrogen, total phosphorous, chloride, and trace elements in surface-water samples collected from two subsites within two vernal pools near Pleasant Grove, New Jersey in 2022-23. In the winter (December 2022 and February 2023) samples were collected at opposing ends of the ponds, or wherever ponding was sufficient for a sample to be taken. An additional sample was collected in July 2023 during the amphibian breeding season. The number of samples collected during each sampling event varied based on water availability and in July 2023 only one...

From 16 June to 30 July, 2021, a Virginia Tech team of 4-6 sampled the fish community in 30 Shenandoah Valley streams (Virginia and West Virginia, USA) as part of a larger stream-health study including other teams who surveyed geomorphology, water quality, flow, temperature, macroinvertebrates, and fish health at the same 30 streams. The fish community team also sampled three additional bonus streams (SiteID's FOLL, NAKE, and TUMB) during 19-22 August, 2021. These 33 streams had upstream drainage areas of 7 to 46 sq. km and included 4 James River tributaries (SiteID's POAG, MLRB, CEDR, PISG), one Potomac River tributary (HARL), and 28 Shenandoah River tributaries. At each stream, we sampled fish from two reaches...

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) are at the center of state and national land use policies largely because of their unique life-history traits as an ecological indicator for health of sagebrush ecosystems. These data represent an updated population trend analysis and Targeted Annual Warning System (TAWS) for state and federal land and wildlife managers to use best available science to help guide current management and conservation plans aimed at benefitting sage-grouse populations range-wide. This analysis relied on previously published population trend modeling methodology from Coates and others (2021, 2022) and includes population lek count data from 1960-2023. Bayesian state-space models estimated...
