This data product consists of a database of population change and abundance estimates for North American birds, estimated from North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data. Data are presented for 548 species of birds in 4 spreadsheets containing trend estimates and annual indices for 2 time periods. Estimates are derived for each species using the 1 of 4 alternative models, and a cross-validation model selection procedure was used to select the best model for each species.

The Shenanadoah Salamander (Plethodon shenandoah) is an endangered salamander found only in the mountains of Shenandoah National Park. Field surveys of the salamander were conducted from 2007-2022 using daytime cover object surveys. In order to capture the totality of P. shendandoah’s range we sampled from low to high elevation across a broad geographic range. We created a spatial generalized additive model with aspect, latitude, longitude, and elevation and heat load index (HLI) to predict salamander occupancy and create a new range map based on our extended surveys. All spatial covariates were extracted from a 15m digital elevation model layer of Shenandoah National Park. Temperature and precipitaiton data were...

These datasets provide geographic sampling information for Bathymodiolin mussels collected from three cold seep sites off the mid-Atlantic U.S. coast, northwestern Atlantic Ocean. Also included are GenBank accession numbers for mitochondrial gene sequences (COI and ND4) and sequence alignments (File1_mussels) used in phylogenetic analyses for molecular identification of the mussel species. Additionally, GenBank accession numbers for the BioProject containing 16S metabarcoding sequence data used to identify gill symbionts in mussels are provided, along with supporting details for the analyses performed on the 16S metabarcoding data (File2_Symbionts).

Archived plasma from fish health monitoring sites within the Chesapeake Bay watershed was analyzed for 13 perfluoroalkyl compounds. Smallmouth bass were collected from two sites in the Potomac River drainage (Antietam Creek, Maryland and South Branch Potomac, West Virginia) and two in the Susquehanna River drainage (West Branch Mahantango Creek, Pennsylvania and Pine Creek, Pennsylvania). Site and date of collection, length, weight and age of each adult smallmouth bass were documented. Four compounds were detected in every plasma sample, while two additonal compounds were only occasionally observed at low concentrations.

This database contains breeding pond use data (i.e., egg mass and larval abundance counts) of three ambystomatid salamander species (Spotted salamander, Jefferson salamander, and marbled salamander) collected from 200 individual aquatic habitats (ponds, wetlands, and impoundments) in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation. Data were collected between the years 2001 and 2003. The database contains three separate table files (i.e., entities) in csv format: 1) Salamander egg mass/larval abundance counts; 2) site habitat data; and 3) site location data. The salamander data file includes egg mass counts for Spotted and Jefferson salamanders and presence/absence data for Marbled salamander larvae for Marbled salamanders...

This data release contains predictions of selected fish community metrics and fish species occurrence using Random Forest models with landscape data for inland reaches across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBW). Predictions were made at four time intervals (2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016) according to changes in landcover using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). The fish sampling data used to compute these metrics were compiled from various fish sampling programs conducted by state and federal agencies, county governments, universities, and river basin commissions across the watershed. Community metrics describe composition, tolerances, habitat preferences, and functional traits of fish communities (and were derived...

These data describe longitudinal (upstream to downstream) patterns of dewatering during summer baseflow (July-September) conditions in nine watersheds in Shenandoah National park. In July-August of 2016 all nine watersheds (Jeremy's Run, Hazel River, Piney River, Hughes River, Staunton River, Whiteoak Canyon Run, Paine Run, Meadow Run, and Big Run) were evaluated for dewatering. In September of 2019, dewatering surveys were repeated in three watersheds (Pine Run, Piney River, and Staunton River) to evaluate annual variation in dewatering patterns. Data were collected by team of investigators walking each stream from an upstream point defined by the point along the stream draining 75-hectares (determined using watershed...
An important component of assessing the hazards of anticoagulant rodenticides to non-target wildlife are observations in exposed free-ranging individuals. The objective of this study was to determine if environmentally realistic, sublethal first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide exposures via prey, can result in direct or indirect adverse effects to free-flying raptors. We offered black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) that had fed on Rozol® Prairie Dog Bait (0.005% active ingredient chlorophacinone) to six wild-caught red-tailed hawks (RTHA, Buteo jamaicensis), and uncontaminated black-tailed prairie dogs to two wild-caught RTHAs for 7 days. On day 6, blood was collected from all eight RTHAs to determine...
Adult and young of the year smallmouth bass from the Chesapeake Bay watershed have faced health issues (mortality events, disease by a variety of pathogens, endocrine disruption in male fish, evidence of oxidative damage to tissues, and signs of exposure to chemical contaminants) at multiple sites within the Susquehanna and Potomac River basins. Functional immune assays were added to long-term comprehensive monitoring assessments to determine if immunosuppression was playing a role in observed disease and mortalities because no one single or consistent cause could be identified. The functional immune assays measured bactericidal activity, respiratory burst activity, and lymphocyte mitogenesis using leukocytes isolated...

Summarization of the University of Massachusetts Landscape Ecology Lab Designing Sustainable Landscapes (DSL) datasets with the Spatial Hydro-Ecological Decision System (SHEDS) framework. These DSL data were summarized using the local and upstream total accumulation methods within SHEDS. The result are two sets of data, a continuous dataset and a discrete dataset. The continuous dataset contains the average value for the local SHEDS catchments and the area-weighted sums of the averages for the local and all upstream SHEDS catchments for all continuous variables in the DSL dataset. The discrete dataset contains the area in square meters covered by each class within all discrete variables in the DSL dataset for the...

This page provides access to antiquated versions of the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset. These versions are in an older, legacy format and are presented here under one digital object identifier, doi:10.5066/P9YASED1. Please note that this supersedes two prior identifiers, doi:10.5066/F7Q81B46 (original 1966-2014 release) and doi:10.5066/F71R6NK8 (original 1966-2015 release). Unless visitors have a specific need for these archived data, they should return to the Main BBS Dataset Page and choose the most recent data release, as that one will include all BBS data released to date: www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/52b1dfa8e4b0d9b325230cd9. These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective...
