Trial examining blood clotting function response in kestrels initially fed a diet containing chlorophacinone (CPN) or brodifacoum (BROD), and following a recovery period, kestrels were challenged with a diet containing chlorophacinone. Kestrels received two 25 ± 0.1 g NBP meatballs daily for a 7-day period containing either vehicle, 1.5 µg CPN/g wet wt diet (i.e., 1.5 ppm chlorophacinone) or 0.5 µg brodifacoum/g wet wt (i.e., 0.5 ppm brodifacoum) during an initial exposure phase. Following 7 day recovery period, these kestrels were then fed 0.75 µg CPN/g wet wt diet (i.e., 0.75 ppm chlorophacinone) for a 7 day challenge exposure phase. Hereafter, these groups are designated control-chlorophacinone challenge (CON-CPN),...

Data are modeled estimates of flow status (inclined, diminished, or indeterminant) for 12 published hydrologic metrics (HMs) that characterize main components of flow regimes (duration, frequency, magnitude, timing, and rate of change). Model estimates came from random forest models independently built for each HM that predict flow status category using drainage area and previously summarized upstream catchment accumulated values (NHDPlus v2.1, 1:100,000 scale) for 15 landscape variables that describe anthropogenic stress related to urban development, agriculture, water usage and augmentation, and drainage area. HM observed data came from Eng et al. (2019) who published quantitative and categorical estimates of...

This data product consists of a database of population change and abundance estimates for North American birds, estimated from North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data. Data are presented for 548 species of birds in 4 spreadsheets containing trend estimates and annual indices for 2 time periods. Estimates are derived for each species using the 1 of 4 alternative models, and a cross-validation model selection procedure was used to select the best model for each species. Metadata associated with this data product provides information specific to the associated analysis results; metadata for the BBS data are available at Ziolkowski, D.J., Lutmerding, M., English, W.B., Aponte, V.I., and Hudson, M-A.R., 2023,...
This is an antiquated version of the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset that has been superseded by a more recent release. Unless visitors have a specific need for these archived data, they should return to the Main BBS Dataset Page and choose the most recent data release, as that one will include all BBS data released to date. The 1966-2017 North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset contains avian point count data for more than 700 North American bird taxa (species, races, and unidentified species groupings). These data are collected annually during the breeding season, primarily in June, along thousands of randomly established roadside survey routes in the United States and Canada. Routes...

Data are included for two types of field surveys conducted for freshwater mussels within the Neversink River in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Timed search (qualitative) surveys were conducted in consecutive ~200 meter sections of river in 2006 and 2007; a subset of these sections were re-surveyed qualitatively in 2009. The number of mussels of each species and associated search time were recorded for each survey section to determine a catch per unit effort (CPUE; number of individuals found per person hour). Within the 2009 qualitatively surveyed areas, ten ~200 meter sections of stream were selected in which to conduct quantitative surveys to estimate mussel abundance. Quantitative survey methods...

This data release contains calculated metrics which summarize various biodiversity and functional/life history trait information about fish communities sampled across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed as well as ancillary data related to time/place of sampling and sampling methodology. The fish sampling data used to compute these metrics were compiled from various fish sampling programs conducted by state and federal agencies, county governments, universities, and river basin commissions across the watershed. Prior to computation of community metrics data from individual fish sampling programs were investigated for completeness and data entry errors. Subsequently, desired fields were extracted from each individual dataset...

This data release is a summarization of the US Geological Survey National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2019 Land Cover datasets and the Landscape Ecology Lab at the University of Massachusetts Designing Sustainable Landscapes (DSL) datasets within the USGS Spatial Hydro-Ecological Decision System (SHEDS) framework. The output is a series of tables consisting of the summarized values of continuous variables and discrete variables, respectively, for each local SHEDS catchment within the SHEDS Hydro-Region 2 for both datasets. An additional output are tables of the continuous and discrete variables individually processed through an upstream accumulation method for each catchment...

A number of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have been reported to interfere with the thyroid signaling pathway and cause oxidative stress in birds, yet the underlying shifts in gene expression associated with these effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we measured hepatic transcriptional responses of 31 genes in American kestrel hatchlings following in ovo exposure to one of three high-volume alternative BFRs: 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTPBE), bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH), or 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EHTBB). Hatchling kestrels exhibited shifts in the expression of genes related to oxidative stress (CYP, GSTA, SOD, GPx), thyroid hormone metabolism...

Emergence of avian influenza viruses with high lethality to humans, such as the currently circulating highly pathogenic A(H5N1) and A(H7N9) cause serious concern for the global economic and public health sectors. To improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal trends in transmission risk we developed a model that predicts hotspots of novel virus emergence between domestic and wild birds and incorporates H5N1 risk factors. Models were produced at 30 km spatial resolution across two temporal seasons. Files are named using a TransmisisonDirection_Season_DataType format such that Transmission direction can end in a (poultry to waterfowl) or b (waterfowl to poultry), Season can be breeding (br) or wintering...

This data release links habitat assessment sites to both the NHDPlus Version 2 and NHDPlus High Resolution Region 02 networks using the hydrolink methodology. Linked habitat sites are those compiled by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) during creation of the Chesapeake Bay Basin-wide Index of Biotic Integrity (Chessie BIBI) for benthic macroinvertebrates (https://datahub.chesapeakebay.net/LivingResources). The data set contains a unique sample identifier created by ICPRB, survey program, coordinates of sample, linked V2 COMID and HR Permanent Identifier, and information regarding uncertainty in the attribution. We strongly caution the use of sampling points with attribution uncertainty...

Here we provide data used to report on changes in tidal marsh elevation at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), located in Dorchester, Maryland, USA. This dataset includes Surface Elevation Table (SET) measurements taken from 40 SET platforms distributed across the refuge. At each platform location annual measurements of wetland surface elevation were made from 20010-2013.
The 1966-2023 North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset contains avian point count data for more than 700 North American bird taxa (species, races, and unidentified species groupings). These data are collected annually during the breeding season, primarily in June, along thousands of randomly established roadside survey routes in the United States and Canada. Routes are roughly 24.5 miles (39.2 km) long with counting locations placed at approximately half-mile (800-m) intervals, for a total of 50 stops. At each stop, a citizen scientist highly skilled in avian identification conducts a 3-minute point count, recording all birds seen within a quarter-mile (400-m) radius and all birds heard. Surveys begin 30...

The Ecology Section at the USGS Conte Laboratory has studied fish in the West Brook since 1997. The goal is to understand the strength and direction of drivers on fish growth, movement, reproduction and survival in the wild. We hope to provide a comprehensive understanding of fish population dynamics for this stream network and ultimately individual fitness (natural selection and evolution) in the study area.

A final report was produced for this SSP project. The general objectives to this study were threefold, as follows: 1. To determine the environmental presence and abundance of Bden in headwater regions of river systems in the Southeastern United States through water samples evaluated for the presence of environmental DNA (eDNA). 2. To determine the presence of Bden infection in fauna of these headwater regions, including larval and adult amphibians as well as other potential reservoirs of infection. 3. To determine whether any association exists between water flow rate and associated stream parameters in headwater systems versus the presence/prevalence of Bden both in the environment and infecting amphibian host...
