A laboratory study was conducted at the Northern Appalachian Research Laboratory (Wellsboro, PA) on the ability to manipulate photoperiod and water temperatures to determine its effects on Eastern elliptio freshwater mussel glochidia production. Brooding mussels were collected from Pine Creek, Tioga County, PA in late December and were housed in the laboratory in groups subjected to one of four environmental treatments: natural temperature and photoperiod, 6 week delay in natural conditions, 12 week delay in natural conditions, and natural temperature and photoperiod with a winter low of 10°C. In this study, "natural" conditions refer to light and temperature conditions that mimic what mussels would have been exposed...

This Data Release contains stream temperature observations for 10 sites in the Sleepy Creek Watershed (West Virginia) during summer 2021. Data were collected using Onset ProV2 temperature gages within perforated PVC cases attached to stream substrates with rebar. Temperature gages were deployed and retrieved by volunteers with the Sleepy Creek Watershed Association. Temperature records are provided for 30-minute increments between June 1 and August 31, 2021 (92 days, 4416 observations per site, total of 44160 observations). Site location coordinates are provided.

The data were gathered as part of a long-term, seasonal assessment of estrogenicity in selected locations within Pennsylvania from 2012-2017. Data were collected over this time frame to determine seasonal and annual changes in surface water estrogenicity.Estrogen is reported as estrogen equivalents (EEQ) as determined by a bioluminescent yeast estrogen screen. A total of 193 grab water samples were collected during this time of which 41% had EEQ above the limit of detection. The maximum estrogen equivalents (EEQ) measured was 5.44 ng EEQ/ L, while the median concentration was 0.44 ng/L. POCIS samplers were deployed at a number of sites to determine time-weighted estrogenicity between 2014 and 2017. A total of 150...

Histopathological assessments of young-of-the-year smallmouth bass (YOY SMB) in the Susquehanna River drainage identified a high prevalence of the myxozoan Myxobolus inornatus. This myxozoan infects the connective tissue of the muscle below the skin but is sometimes observed in the esophagus and buccal cavity. In some instances, shallow infections cause breaks in the skin which could increase the chance of opportunistic bacterial infections. Several microbial pathogens including Flavobacterium columnare, Aeromonas spp. and largemouth bass virus (LMBV) have also been cultured from clinically diseased YOY. A multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay was developed to determine potential co-localization...

U.S. Geological Survey and partners are testing the effects of prescribed fire on Black Rails, Yellow Rails, and Mottled Ducks in the high marsh habitats of the northern Gulf of Mexico region. The study is conducted in cooperation with Mississippi State University, Illinois Natural History Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations. The objectives of this project are to develop an adaptive management framework that allows land managers to reduce our uncertainty about the effects of prescribed fire on these species and the habitats on which they depend, and give managers tools and information that will help them determine the best management actions to...

This data includes point and polygon layers that are a compilation of study sites, watersheds, and areas of interest associated with the USGS Chesapeake Bay Theme 1 (factors affecting stream health, fish habitat, and aquatic conditions) and Theme 2 (coastal Habitats and Implications for Waterbirds) activities. Locations in this dataset were compiled from various USGS Chesapeake Bay activities and with input from USGS scientists to indicate study areas under multiple projects associated with USGS Chesapeake Bay Science Theme 1 and Theme 2 activities. Data and areas provided here represent current and historical sites as of June 2020 to highlight activity locations and areas of interest throughout the Chesapeake...

The Grand Calumet River flows through northwestern Indiana and was designated an EPA Area of Concern (AOC) in 1987. There are multiple legacy pollutants in the river including but not limited to heavy metals and PCBs. To investigate potential causes and patterns of eutrophication in the river, water samples were collected for 16S rRNA microbial and eukaryotic 18S rRNA amplicon sequencing during April - September 2021. This data release describes the resulting sequencing data.
These tabular data are summaries of human related landscape variables within catchments of the Chesapeake Bay watershed using the Xstrm methodology at 1:24,000 scale. Variables being counted as human related include agriculture, barriers, road density and road/stream crossing data. Outputs consist of tabular comma-separated values files (CSVs) for both local catchment and network summaries linked to the National Hydrography Dataset Plus High-Resolution (NHDPlus HR) framework by NHDPlus ID. Local catchments are defined as the single catchment the data is summarized within. Network accumulation summaries were completed for each of the local catchments and their network connected upstream and/or downstream catchments....

Summarization of US Geological Survey National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2016 Land Cover datasets with the Spatial Hydro-Ecological Decision System (SHEDS) framework. These NLCD data were summarized using the local and upstream total accumulation methods within SHEDS. These datasets contain the area in square meters covered by each land cover class within all the land cover datasets for the local SHEDS catchments along with the area-weighted sum of the local and all upstream SHEDS catchment values. The local catchment summarizations also include the percentage of the catchment that contains land cover data for the particular class being summarized.

Additionally, these data were summarized into percent coverage for each land cover class within all land cover datasets for the local SHEDS catchments...

A breach in the White Dam has been proposed to facilitate fish passage. As a Technical Assistance project, the U.S. Geological Survey provided toxicity assessments of sediment samples collected by USEPA personnel. These data describe water-quality conditions in exposure chambers during 42-d sediment exposures using the freshwater amphipod, Hyalella azteca.

Two files contain data related to the species and abundance of nekton collected from creeks, pools and ditches in MSUs (1 data file, 1 definitions file). Two files contain data related to the height of key salt marsh vegetation species...

These data describe the spatio-temporal distribution of dabbling duck species across the continental United States during four biologically relevant seasons. This dataset contains two types of distribution models: (1) probability of presence, and (2) abundance. The model type, species, and season depicted in a raster are defined in the file name. File names begin with either abun (indicating that it is an abundance model) or prob (indicating a probability of occurrence model). Following model type is species, for which there are 10 provided: ABDU (American Black Duck), AMEW (American Wigeon), BWTE (Blue-winged Teal), CITE (Cinnamon Teal), GADW (Gadwall), AGWT (Green-winged Teal), MALL (Mallard), MODU (Mottled...
This is an antiquated version of the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset that has been superseded by a more recent release. Unless visitors have a specific need for these archived data, they should return to the Main BBS Dataset Page and choose the most recent data release, as that one will include all BBS data released to date. The 1966-2018 North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) dataset contains avian point count data for more than 700 North American bird taxa (species, races, and unidentified species groupings). These data are collected annually during the breeding season, primarily in June, along thousands of randomly established roadside survey routes in the United States and Canada. Routes...
