This data product provides summary information, by species, of changes in relative visibility of birds (phenology effects) through the April - July time period in which the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is conducted. Data are presented for 408 species of birds. Seasonal phenology effects are presented for selected latitudes and years, documenting changes in visibility and a variety of statistics to allow users to assess the significance of those effects. Results are presented as csv files, stored in zip files by first letter of the species common name and a single zip file containing csv files for 408 species. Links are provided to Child Items containing additional information in species-specific R...

This data release links fish survey data from a suite of programs in the Chesapeake Bay watershed as well the benthic macroinvertebrate sites included in the Chesapeake Bay Basin-wide Index of Biotic Integrity (Chessie BIBI) developed by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) and available from the Chesapeake Bay Program (https://datahub.chesapeakebay.net/LivingResources). The data set contains site name, survey program, coordinates of sample, and ancillary information such as sample date and site location information where available. It also includes the NHDPlus V2.1 unique identifier, COMID, as well as a confidence classification category for each of these assignments based on a set of pre-determined...

The North American Bird Banding Program is administered through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL), Eastern Ecological Science Center at the Patuxent Research Refuge (EESC) and the Bird Banding Office (BBO), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). The respective banding offices have similar functions and policies and use the same bands, reporting forms and data formats. This long-term dataset (1960-2023) consists of over 83 million bird banding, encounter and recapture records of over 1,000 species covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). Data is contributed by US and Canadian bird banding permit holders: federal, state, tribal, local government, non-government agencies,...

This Data Release contains stream temperature data for 28 sites within the headwaters of the Potomac River basin. Data were collected between June 1, 2021-February 5, 2023 at 30-minute increments. We collected data using Onset ProV2 gages in perforated PVC cases mounted to stream substrates with rebar. This work was funded by the USGS Priority Ecosystem Science program for the Chesapeake Bay.

This data set is from a study examining the flow of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through food webs. The data are PFAS concentrations in gastrointestinal contents of tree swallows.

Monitoring wild fish health and associated exposure effects in regions where agriculture and development have impacted rivers and streams has become a valuable research tool. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) are a sensitive, indicator species that exhibit symptoms of immunosupression and endocrine disruption in response to water quality changes and contaminant exposure. In the Susquehanna River drainage, smallmouth bass have been used in biomonitoring assessments to help understand changes in the population due to poor young-of-the-year recruitment and health effects. To help determine effects of agriculture and development on smallmouth bass health, two sites (a developed/agriculture site and a forested site)...

These data include estimates of landcover and land use characteristics including high phytoestrogen crop cover, estimated pesticide applications, EPA PFAS facilities, nutrients from biosolids, and select climate (temperature and precipitation) variables summarized for several fish health sites in the eastern United States.

Data were collected as part of an investigation developed by Leetown Science Center to investigate the comparative detection of avian influenza viruses from waterfowl and potential environmental reservoirs such as aquatic sediment from waterfowl habitat. This dataset identifies positive or negative test results for qRT-PCR (quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) for avian influenza virus through identification of the Type A influenza virus matrix gene from aquatic sediment samples. Sediment samples were collected from waterfowl habitat so as to determine if temporal and spatial differences in virus detection by qRT-PCR were evident among test sites.

This data product consists of a database of population change and abundance estimates for North American birds, estimated from North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data. Data are presented for 548 species of birds in 4 spreadsheets containing trend estimates and annual indices for 2 time periods. Estimates are derived for each species using the 1 of 4 alternative models, and a cross-validation model selection procedure was used to select the best model for each species. Metadata for the BBS data used to produce these estimates is available from a USGS ftp site (ftp://ftpext.usgs.gov/pub/er/md/laurel/BBS/DataFiles/). Metadata associated with this data product provides information specific to the analysis results.

This data set is comprised of four files related to the biosurveillance of low pathogenic avian influenza viruses (LPAIV) in migratory waterfowl at 22 locations in the Maryland portion of the Delmarva Peninsula in fall/winter of 2013-2014. Two files contain data related to the species, age, and AIV prevalence for all birds sampled (1 data file, 1 definitions file). The other two files contain data related to the primers and standards used in bioassays for AIVs (1 data file, 1 definitions file).

In many coastal regions throughout the world, there is increasing pressure to harden shorelines to protect human infrastructures against sea level rise, storm surge, and erosion. These data reflect the digitization of the shorelines of 21 sub-estuaries throughout the Chesapeake Bay (USA) as observed from 2010 through 2014. Shoreline segments are classified into one of seven shoreline types: bulkhead, riprap, developed, natural marsh, Phragmites-dominated marsh, sandy beach, and forest. These data were collected as part of a larger effort to understand the impacts of shoreline hardening on waterbird community integrity.

This data release presents the data, JAGS models, and R code used to manipulate data and to produce results and figures presented in the USGS Open File Report, "Decision-Support Framework for Linking Regional-Scale Management Actions to Continental-Scale Conservation of Wide-Ranging Species, (https://doi.org/10.5066/P93YTR3X). The zip folder is provided so that other can reproduce results from the integrated population model, inspect model structure and posterior simulations, conduct analyses not present in the report, and use and modify the code. Raw source data can be sourced from the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory, USFWS Surveys and Monitoring Branch, National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration, and Ducks Unlimited...

This data release contains predictions of stream biological condition as defined by the Chesapeake basin-wide index of biotic integrity for stream macroinvertebrates (Chessie BIBI) using Random Forest models with landscape data for small streams (≤ 200 km2 in upstream drainage) across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBW). Predictions were made at eight time periods (2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2019) according to changes in landcover using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). The Chessie BIBI data used were provided by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin. Uncertainty was calculated using model prediction intervals. For complete data descriptions and data interpretation see associated...
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is used to determine the consumption of, or exposure to, chemicals or pathogens in human populations, and is conducted by collecting representative samples of untreated wastewater (influent) to quantify pathogens shed in the population served by the sampled wastewater system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and other agencies throughout the federal government, initiated the National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to conduct WBE using analytical methods for the collection and analysis of SARS-CoV-2...

Wild lesser scaup from the Chesapeake Bay, captured and implanted with satellite transmitters for a separate ecology study, were opportunistically sampled for avian influenza. These data detail the virological sampling results, obtained post release, which include a single positive for clade 2.3.4.4 H5N1 virus of the A/goose/Guangdong/1/1996 (Gs/GD) H5N1 lineage of highly pathogenic IAV. These data also include the movements of the infected bird from release until death as well as four conspecifics marked and released concurrent with the HPAI positive bird. These data support a paired publication.
