General land manager description (e.g. Federal, Tribal, State, Private) standardized for the US. See PAD-US Data Standard for "Agency Name" to "Agency Type" crosswalk or look up table included in data download, for full domain descriptions. Use "Manager Type" rather than "Owner Type" for the most complete depiction of federal lands as overlapping designations (i.e. "Designation") and ownership related data gaps (i.e. "Unknown") occur in the federal theme.
This provisional Biogeographic Analysis Package provides an analysis of protection status for ecological systems within Omernik Level III Ecoregions. The ecological system classification defines groups of plant communities that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients and is the primary map class used in the Gap Analysis Program (GAP) land cover layer (based on 2001 satellite imagery). This package can be used to identify the ecoregions where ecological systems have the greatest representation in GAP Status 1 and 2 lands (lands managed for the protection of biodiversity) and the ecoregions where ecological systems are the least protected....
The USGS Science Analytics and Synthesis Foundational Data Community supports the SAS mission by providing reliable scientific occurrence, habitat, taxonomic, and range data for terrestrial, freshwater and marine species and ecosystems and protected areas data for the U.S.. These datasets are each supported by an update plan that is determined to meet stakeholder and user needs. The datasets are national in scope and are an authoritative source for the information they provide.
Level of public access permitted. Open requires no special requirements for public access to the property (may include regular hours available). Restricted requires a special permit from the owner for access, a registration permit on public land or has highly variable times when open to use. Closed occurs where no public access is allowed (land bank property, special ecological study areas, military bases, etc.). Unknown is assigned where information is not currently available. Access is assigned categorically by Designation Type or provided by PAD-US State Data Stewards, federal or NGO partners. Contact the PAD-US Coordinator with available public access information: lisajjohnson@boisestate.edu
The GAP Status Code is a measure of management intent to conserve biodiversity defined as: Status 1: An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover and a mandated management plan in operation to maintain a natural state within which disturbance events (of natural type, frequency, intensity, and legacy) are allowed to proceed without interference or are mimicked through management. Status 2: An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover and a mandated management plan in operation to maintain a primarily natural state, but which may receive uses or management practices that degrade the quality of existing natural communities, including suppression of natural disturbance....
Land manager or administrative agency (e.g. USFS, State Fish and Game, City Land, TNC) standardized for the US. See PAD-US Data Standard or the "Agency Name" look-up table included in the data download for full domain descriptions. Use "Manager Name" rather than "Owner Name" for the best depiction of federal lands as many overlapping designations (i.e. "Designation") and ownership related data gaps (i.e. "Unknown") occur in the federal theme. GAP attributes the applicable "Agency Name" to all records provided by the agency data steward in the "Manager Name" field. "Owner Name" contains 'unknown' values where parcel level ownership data are not yet available from authoritative data sources.
This is an experimental collection that implements an information model for biogeographic information. We are building this on the conceptual foundation from the Global Change Information System. We are using the Biogeographic Information System, accessed via the ScienceBase API, as a basis to drive an experimental new map interface (National Biogeographic Map) and a developing iterative report concept (National Biodiversity Assessment).
All protected areas classified by protection level and manager type. Shows for each manager type (federal, state, etc.) lands that are protected for biodiversity and for multiple uses - allows users to see what level of agency has what extent of biodiversity protection in their management approach.
The Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is the official inventory of protected open space in the United States. With over 3 billion acres in thousands of holdings, the spatial data in PAD-US include public lands, overlapping management designations, and Marine Protected Areas held in trust by national, state, some local governments, and by some nonprofit conservation organizations.

Introduction and global data sharing partnerships The USGS Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS) Gap Analysis Project (GAP) manages the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US), an Arc10x geodatabase, that includes areas dedicated to the preservation of biological diversity and to other natural, recreation, historic, and cultural uses, managed for these purposes through legal or other effective means. The United Nations Environmental Program World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) tracks global progress toward biodiversity protection targets (Aichi Target 11) enacted by the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) through the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and World Database on...
