RaBET (Rangeland Brush Estimation Toolbox for Major Land Resource Areas (MLRAs)) is an online ArcGIS toolbox that generates accurate geospatial and tabular data describing canopy cover at the tract level to streamline landowner agreements (USFWS Partners for Fish and Wildlife PFW) and/or NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) contracts for brush management. Priority MLRAs cover 33.8 million acres with 20.6 million acres of grasslands. This project supports the integration of RaBET into project planning and contract development and is projected to increase the number of contracts and acres impacted by 25% (23,750 acres) in these MLRAs in Kansas and Nebraska through NRCS EQIP alone, based on 2020 enrollment....

Pollinator surveys are currently being conducted in North Dakota, but we are lacking data in other areas. Given likely petitions on the horizon, having baseline data for pollinators will be essential for an informed response. Additionally, these data will be important for habitat prioritization. Given the complexity and difficulty for comprehensive identification of all key pollinators and the urgency of threatened petitions, initial projects should likely focus on bees and butterflies. Results of these surveys will also help guide where and how to sample several at risk species in different habitat types across several states. The American sand lance (Ammodytes americanus, Ammodytidae) and the Northern sand lance (A. dubius, Ammodytidae) are small forage fishes that play an important functional role in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean (NWA). The NWA is a highly dynamic ecosystem currently facing increased risks from climate change, fishing and energy development. Bumble bee populations have decreased rapidly in the past 25 years resulting in the IUCN Red List identifying 12 species, more than 25% of all species in America north of Mexico, as species of conservation concern. The Great Plains is the mixing pot for eastern and western species, with historic records for 22 bumble bee species (nearly 50% of the North American fauna), including eight species identified as threatened by the IUCN Red List and four species currently listed as threatened, endangered, or petitioned for T&E status and at least two more that may be petitioned in the near future. This project will partially support a PhD student at South Dakota State University (SDSU) advised by a diverse partnership engaged in wetlands conservation in SD (e.g., USFWS, SDGFP, NRCS, PPJV, NGOs). It will use recent advancements in remote sensing technology and analytical frameworks to identify the location and type of drained wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region of eastern South Dakota. The objective of this project will be to combine and analyze existing GIS layers describing the known and modeled distribution of the highest priority declining grassland bird species with newly-developed layers of the potentially undisturbed lands (PUDL) and plowprint information to identify those places on the landscape where conservation delivery is likely to bring about the most progress toward meeting population trend goals for the species. This project will revise existing priority protection and restoration watersheds for 5-7 aquatic guilds and 4-8 priority aquatic species across the Grassland Ecosystem. The project will utilize and update the original model platform used to create the first priorities for the Great Plains Fish Habitat Partnership (GPFHP) in 2011 and utilize input from the Partners Council fishery experts of the GPFHP, which is composed of twenty state and federal agencies and nonprofits focused on aquatic conservation in the Great Plains.
