This dataset contains predictions of habitat suitability of reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) in Upper Mississippi River floodplain forest understories from Pool 3 to Pool 13. Predictions were created using three machine learning algorithms (Bayesian additive regression trees, boosted trees, and random forest). This dataset contains rasters that provide habitat suitability predictions for each 12m raster cell that had forested landcover in 2010. In addition to one raster for each of the three algorithms an ensemble (mean prediction of all three algorithms) prediction raster for each pool is provided. The presence/absence observations used to train the model are contained in a .csv file with each plot location....

The BioAcoustic Fish Fence (BAFF; Fish Guidance Systems Ltd.) is a multi-modal deterrent that utilizes a combination of lights, sound, and bubbles to guide fish away from a location. An experimental deployment of a BAFF is currently ongoing at Barkley Lock and Dam on the Cumberland River near Grand Rivers, KY. This dataset includes information derived from two telemetry arrays (i.e., VEMCO and HTI) deployed in the vicinity of Barkley Lock and Dam to evaluate fish movement and response to the BAFF. Silver carp, grass carp, and native fish species were detected with this system. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
Five R Markdown files (.Rmd) were created for the study entitled: Assessments of the binary mixtures of four toxicants on Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) mortality. R codes were used to determine toxicant mixture ratios, summarize data, and analyze dose-response relationships in single toxicant and toxicant mixture trials. Files are described in the readme file in the order in which they were used for the study. Each R Markdown file has a complimentary R Script file (.R) with the same file name. All R Markdown files were created in RStudio version 1.2.1335 with R version 3.6.1 and Tidyverse version 1.3.0. Additional packages are listed in braces, “{},” with the corresponding R Markdown description.

Data set includes water Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and δ18O for the Mississippi River and tributaries, and otolith Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and δ18O data from bigheaded carp (Silver Carp and BIghead Carp) collected in navigation pools 16-19 of the Upper Mississippi River in 2016 to 2018. Bigheaded carp (Bighead Carp and Silver Carp) are invasive species in the US and have spread throughout most of the lower Mississippi River Basin. Population abundance upstream of Lock and Dam 19 (LD19) on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) has likely been limited by the high-head dam at this location, which restricts all upstream fish passage to the lock chamber. To determine early-life environments of adult bigheaded carp captured upstream LD19 at the...

This dataset captures the Zebra Mussel dose-response to four independent toxicants and each binary mixture of those toxicants. Toxicants included EarthTec QZ, Clam-Trol CT-2 (syn. Spectrus CT1300), niclosamide, and potassium chloride. Each dose of toxicant was verified with either ICP-OES or UHPLC, depending on analyte, and comparison to a standard curve. Mortality was tabulated for each observation.

Zequanox® is an EPA-registered biopesticide for controlling populations of dreissenid mussels (zebra and quagga mussels). Zequanox has demonstrated selective toxicity toward dreissenid mussels; however, a recent laboratory study indicated the potential for Zequanox to impact a non-target salmonid species. We assessed the potential exposure risk by observing the avoidance behavior of two representative species of cold-, cool-, and warm-water fish (lake trout, brook trout, lake sturgeon, yellow perch, fathead minnow, and bluegill). Fish were subjected to the maximum allowable concentration of Zequanox per the product label (100 mg/L active ingredient). Naïve juvenile fish (n = 30 per species) were individually observed...

In 2016, for the first time, an abundance of age-0 silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were captured at several sites upstream of Lock and Dam 19 on the Upper Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. These data were collected in an attempt to determine the early life environments and frequency and timing of the reproductive events that led to a large year class of age-0 silver carp. This information is important for informing decisions about control measures. We sampled these fish to determine age (days) and early life environments using their otoliths. Sampled age-0 silver carp were collected from navigation Pools 18 and 19 from July–October 2016 using a variety of sampling gears. We aged these fish by counting...

The Underwater Acoustic Deterrent System is an experimental deterrent that utilizes underwater sounds to deter invasive carps. An experimental deployment and evaluation of a UADS is currently being conducted at Lock 19 on the Mississippi River, near Keokuk, Iowa. This dataset includes information derived from two telemetry arrays (i.e., 307 kHz HTI and 69 kHz VEMCO) deployed at and around Lock 19 to evaluate fish movement and response to the UADS in 2021 and 2022. Silver Carp, Bighead Carp, Grass Carp, and a variety of native fish species were tagged and monitored with the telemetry arrays. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

Bayluscide, the 2-aminoethanol salt of niclosamide (2′, 5-dichloro-4′-nitrosalicylanilide), is a pesticide that is used in conjunction with TFM (4-Nitro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol) to treat streams tributary to the Great Lakes that are infested with invasive parasitic sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus). The application TFM with 0.5 to 2.0 percent (%) Bayluscide can significantly reduce the amount of TFM required to achieve effective control. The current formulation of Bayluscide used in combination TFM during stream treatments conducted the Great Lakes Fishery Commission binational Sea Lamprey Control Program is an emulsifiable concentrate (EC). The Bayluscide EC formulation is highly effective; however, it degrades...

This is the qPCR and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) data in support of the article "Validation of a portable eDNA detection kit for invasive carps". There are four types of data contained in five files including: limit of detection analysis for each method (qPCR and LAMP), qPCR analysis and LAMP analysis of eDNA samples collected over time from ponds containing 3 or 33 Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) mixed with thousands of baitfish. The standards and controls data collected with the eDNA sample analysis are split into separate files for each method to simplify the statistical analysis of the eDNA sample data.

Most of the world’s river-floodplain ecosystems are simultaneously undergoing modifications to their hydrological regimes and experiencing species invasions, making it unclear whether invasive species are the main drivers of ecosystem change or simply responding to changes in the hydrological regime. We simulated patterns of forest recruitment and succession in a 2200 ha portion of the Upper Mississippi River floodplain with and without removal of invasive Phalaris arundinacea and under two different future 100-year hydrological scenarios: a future maintaining the average flooding conditions of the past 40 years (random) and a future that projects an observed upward 40-year trend in flooding conditions forward (trending)....

These datasets (e.g., 'Starved Rock fish clearing_multi-beam imaging sonar fish data_Pre-clearing_Sonar-s1.csv') include exported information (e.g., fish detection counts) from processed fixed-location multi-beam imaging sonar and mobile side-scan sonar data. Fish abundance in the navigation lock was determined using mobile side-scan surveys, while multi-beam imaging sonars were used to determine fish counts relative to time (i.e., fish per minute). The datasets were used to examine the efficacy of electricity and underwater acoustics, used in tandem, to affect fish abundance (as determined by hydroacoustic data sampling).

The dataset and accompanying analysis scripts accompany the article "Bayesian multistate models allow incorporation of spatial dynamics to improve invasive species management". The data are summarized detections from acoustic telemetry receivers (69 KHz) from 353 silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and 170 bighead carp (H. nobilis) surgically implanted with transmitters in the Illinois River, USA. The analysis scripts assess probability of detection, probability of monthly movement between navigation pools on the river, probability of apparent survival, and probability of operable transmitter battery through a Bayesian multistate hidden Markov model. The goal of this study was to develop and examine whether a management bait that can be used for selective control of grass carp. Our objectives were to 1) quantify the water-based 24-h LC50 of Antimycin-A for grass carp and rainbow trout, 2) quantify the 96-h LD50 of orally administered Antimycin-A laden bait for grass carp and rainbow trout, 3) quantify the leaching rate of Antimycin-A from the bait in water, and 4) determine if a management bait laden with Antimycin-A will be consumed by grass carp and cause lethality in the laboratory. To meet our objectives, Antimycin-A was encapsulated in a wax microparticle similar to Poole et al. (2018) and incorporated into a rapeseed bait for oral gavage feeding and consumption...
