In cooperation with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) utilized various field and laboratory methods to determine the presence and concentration of cyanobacteria, cyanotoxins, and taste-and-odor compounds in Texas water bodies. This data release documents the results from water-quality samples collected from 41 water bodies in Texas during 2016–19. Both qualitative and quantitative field and laboratory methods were performed. Analyses included phytoplankton taxonomy, measurements of phytoplankton biomass, and concentrations of cyanotoxins, taste-and-odor compounds, and photosynthetic pigments. In cooperation with Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measures nutrient and major-ion concentrations in selected reservoirs in north Texas. This data release documents water-quality data obtained from Ray Hubbard Lake, Grapevine Lake, Ray Roberts Lake, and Lake Lewisville during water years 2016-20. In addition to nutrient and major-ion concentrations, water-quality field properties and other selected constituents measured in the water-quality samples collected from these reservoirs are documented. A previously published MODFLOW-NWT groundwater-flow model for the Rush Springs aquifer in western Oklahoma (using 1 steady state stress period followed by 444 monthly stress periods representing 1979-2015; Ellis, 2018a) was used as the basis of several groundwater-use scenarios. The model is a 3-layer model including the Cloud Chief formation (confining unit of the Rush Springs aquifer), alluvial and terrace deposits, and the Rush Springs aquifer. The scenarios were used to assess the effects of increasing groundwater withdrawals from the Rush Springs aquifer on base flows to streams that flow into Fort Cobb Reservoir to address concerns over groundwater use reducing inflows to the lake. The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Grand River Dam Authority completed a high-resolution multibeam bathymetric survey to compute a new capacity and surface-area table. The capacity and surface-area tables describe the relation between the elevation of the water surface and the volume of water that can be impounded at each given water-surface elevation. The capacity and surface area of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees were computed from a Triangular Irregular Network (TIN) surface created in Global Mapper Version 21.0.1. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the City of South Padre Island, Texas, deployed an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to collect current velocity, wave height, and directional data in the lower Laguna Madre adjacent to South Padre Island, Texas. From July 19, 2022, through January 9, 2023, these data were collected at a site near South Padre Island (USGS station number 260551097100901) by using an up-looking acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) mounted on the bottom of the lower Laguna Madre. In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, collected groundwater-level altitude data and water-quality samples from monitoring wells at the Petro-Chemical Systems, Inc. (Turtle Bayou) Superfund Site in Liberty County, Texas to evaluate the status of groundwater contamination at this previously remediated site. The dataset includes groundwater-level altitudes and field properties measured at 11 monitoring wells along with data from environmental and quality assurance/quality control water quality samples collected at each well. Water-quality samples were analyzed for a suite of volatile and semivolatile organic compounds.

The Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Act was established to systematically assess priority aquifers along the U.S.-Mexico international boundary. This data release contains compiled historical groundwater-withdrawal data for the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida from 1925 to 2018. Most groundwater-withdrawals were distributed to groundwater wells and separated into water-use categories of industrial, production wells, power generation, mining, domestic, irrigation, livestock or commercial. Groundwater-withdrawal data were obtained, where available, from existing database resources hosted by various State and Federal agencies. The Garland Creosoting Superfund Site in Longview, Texas is an abandoned wood treatment facility that used creosote to preserve wood products between 1960 and 1997. This dataset provides compiled and computed data from 1900 through 2017 associated with streamflow statistics used to perform regional analyses for the Brazos, Colorado, Big Cypress, Guadalupe, Neches, Sulphur, and Trinity River Basins. These seven river basins are mostly within Texas, but parts of some of the basins extend into New Mexico and Louisiana. Because changes in precipitation, temperature and groundwater levels can appreciably affect streamflow, understanding changes in streamflow requires taking these forcing variables into account.
