Overview This directory was developed to provide discovery information for anyone looking for publicly accessible repositories that house geological materials in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, this resource is intended to be a tool to facilitate a community of practice. Denali National Park and Preserve (DENA), located in central Alaska, is home to iconic and dynamic landscapes surrounding the tallest mountain range in North America, the Alaska Range. DENA preserves over 6 million acres of wild land that provides opportunities for recreation, subsistence hunting and gathering, preservation of cultural resources, and scientific research. Despite its size and popularity, DENA has only one road—the dead-end, 92-mile Denali National Park Road (hereafter referred to as the Park Road). Collection consist of vertebrates featuring stratigraphic and spatial data. Data is primarily type fossils from the USGS Denver vertebrate Catalog created and maintained by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Data were collected by paleontologist Dr. G. Edward Lewis during his years of service within the USGS Paleontology And Stratigraphy Branch. His catalogs were converted into digital form, Excel and Filemaker Pro database. The Catalog is 1122 fossil localities. His supplementary data has been added whenever possible - sources field map locality points, E&R files with enhanced faunal lists, as well as formal publications. This data release contains tabular data (comma-separated-value files) of natural radiogenic isotopes of strontium, uranium, and thorium for samples of modern water, speleothems, associated with Fitton Cave, north central Arkansas, as well as rock that host the cave deposits. In addition, U-series ages (230Th/U dates and model 234U/238U dates) are calculated from those data for subsamples of speleothems. Stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon are reported for a subset of the stalagmite samples. Sample locations and descriptions as well as specific sub-sample imagery and narrative explanations are included as information supporting the analyses. Three semi-automated detection approaches using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) have been performed to identify artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) riverine dredges on the Madeira River in Brazil. The methods are: i) Search for Unidentified Maritime Objects (SUMO), an established method for large ocean ship detection; and two techniques specifically developed for riverine environments: ii) a local detection method; and iii) a global threshold method. The results from each method are contained on this landing page along with the visual interpretation dataset of SAR data used as the validation dataset. The pre-processed SAR data used to produce these results are found also found on this page.

This data release catalogs the locations of small-scale diamond and gold mining dredges on the Kadéï (Sangha) River, Central African Republic from the years 2015 to 2019. The Kadéï river flows through the Nola prefecture in the CAR and is known to host placer diamond deposits. The dataset was developed through visual interpretation of 387 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scenes. The point shapefile contains 1,747 locations of vessels, identified by type as either a dredge, idle vessel, or ferry.

The Terrestrial Analogs Data Portal (TADP; https://tadp.astrogeology.usgs.gov/) has been established as a repository and data discovery portal which leverages USGS ScienceBase, a trusted long-term digital repository that provides access to all USGS data services. Creation of the TADP service is in response to a number of NASA-generated reports identifying the need for a permanent planetary analog repository which adheres to standards-based archives. Geophysical measurements were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at five sites in Interior Alaska in September 2021 for the purposes of imaging permafrost structure and quantifying variations in subsurface moisture content in relation to thaw features. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements were made along transects 110-222 meters (m) in length to quantify subsurface permafrost characteristics. This dataset contains polygons representing deposits of hyaloclastic debris that were generated between about 3.5 and 3.0 million years ago when a series of basaltic lava flows entered the canyon of the ancestral Columbia River. The lava flows were erupted from volcanoes in the area of the Hood River graben of McClaughry and others (2012), generally have low-potassium tholeiitic basalt composition, and were part of a widespread pulse of mafic volcanism in the northern Oregon Cascade Range that occurred between about 4.4 and 2.1 million years ago (Conrey and others, 1996).
