This data set contains historical data on concentrations of total and dissolved organic carbon in Massachusetts streams from the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS) database. The data were compiled from NWIS using site and sample selection criteria to retrieve all publicly available data from surface-water samples that contained analysis of both total and dissolved organic carbon. The data set was screened, as much as possible from the site and sample description information in NWIS, to retain only routine environmental samples from stream sites. The final data set consists of 223 samples from 52 sites and were collected from 1978 to 2007.

Groundwater residence times were simulated for the major regional aquifers of the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system from New York to North Carolina using particle tracking in a regional groundwater flow model. Millions of particles were distributed throughout the aquifers of the North Atlantic Coastal Plain in a MODFLOW model with a volume-weighted algorithm, then tracked backwards using MODPATH6 (Pollock, 2012) until termination of their paths at their sources of origin, usually the simulated water table. Particles were tracked under simulated transient hydrologic conditions from the reference time of January 1, 2018 backwards to 1900, then under simulated steady-state conditions prior to 1900 until...

This data set is a point data layer representing well yield at 7,287 bedrock wells in the Nashoba Terrane in central and eastern Massachusetts. The data were compiled from databases of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Geological Survey. The data are described and interpreted in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2012-5155 by DeSimone and Barbaro (2012).
Groundwater-quality data were collected from 748 wells as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Project of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Program from May 2012 through December 2013. The data were collected from four types of well networks: principal aquifer study networks, which assess the quality of groundwater used for public water supply; land-use study networks, which assess land-use effects on shallow groundwater quality; major aquifer study networks, which assess the quality of groundwater used for domestic supply; and enhanced trends networks, which evaluate the time scales during which groundwater quality changes. Groundwater samples were analyzed for a large number of water-quality...
Lineaments from three data sources were identified in the Ayer, Hudson, Marlborough, and Westford 7.5 x7.5 minute quadrangles in eastern Massachusetts. The imagery sources were high-altitude (1:80,000) black and white aerial photographs (80K), color-infrared (1:58,000) aerial photographs (CIR), and shaded Digital Elevation Model data (Shaded DEMs). One data layer from each source contains all lineaments identified by either of two independent observers (All) and another data layer contains only lineaments identified independently by both of the two observers (Coincident).

This data release includes water-quality data collected at 38 sites in central and eastern Massachusetts from April 2018 through May 2019 by the U.S. Geological Survey to support the implementation of site-dependent aluminum criteria for Massachusetts waters. Samples of effluent and receiving surface waters were collected monthly at four wastewater-treatment facilities (WWTFs) and seven water-treatment facilities (WTFs) (see SWQ_data_and_instantaneous_CMC_CCC_values.txt). The measured properties and constituents include pH, hardness, and filtered (dissolved) organic carbon, which are required inputs to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Aluminum Criteria Calculator version 2.0 (U.S. Environmental Protection...

Data used to model and map manganese concentrations in groundwater in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain (NACP) aquifer system, eastern USA, are documented in this data release. The model predicts manganese concentration within four classes and is based on concentration data from 4492 wells. The well data were compiled from U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Suffolk County Water Authority (Suffolk County, New York), and state agency sources. The four concentration classes are based on guidelines for drinking water quality: below detection (class 1, less than 10 micrograms per liter (ug/L)); detected but less than the aesthetic guideline of 50 ug/L (class 2); greater than the aesthetic...

From October 2017 through September 2022, the National Water Quality Network (NWQN) monitored 110 surface-water river and stream sites and more than 1,800 groundwater wells for a large number of water-quality analytes, for which associated quality-control data and corresponding statistical summaries are included in this data release. The quality-control data—for samples that were collected in the field (at all 110 surface-water sites, 350 groundwater wells, and 16 quality-control-only sites), prepared in the laboratory, or prepared by a third party—can be used to assess the quality of environmental data collected by the NWQN through the estimation of bias and variability in reported results. The general analyte...

Data and preliminary machine-learning models used to predict manganese and 1,4-dioxane in groundwater on Long Island are documented in this data release. Concentration data used to develop the models were from 910 wells for manganese and 553 wells for 1,4-dioxane, primarily public supply wells, from U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and Suffolk County Water Authority sources. Thirty-two explanatory variables describe depth, groundwater flow, land use, soil properties, and other features of the aquifer system. The models use XGBoost, an ensemble tree machine learning method. Four models are documented for manganese, predicting the probability of concentrations relative to four...

Data used to model and map pH and redox conditions in groundwater in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system, eastern USA, are documented in this data release. The models use as input data measurements of pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations at about 3000 to 5000 wells, which were compiled primarily from U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency databases. The boosted regression trees machine learning method was used to build the models. Explanatory variables (predictors) describe geology, hydrology, chemistry, physical characteristics, anthropogenic influence, metrics from a groundwater flow model, and groundwater residence times in the aquifer system. Data for four models are...
