Public access spatial analysis and statistic summaries of the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) provide land managers and decision makers with a general assessment of public access across the nation, as represented by the Public Access Category (see Public Access Cat Definition sheet in Microsoft Excel downloads). Area statistics include total acreage, acres by managing agency, and percent access. These summaries are available for various units: National, State, Department of the Interior Region, Congressional District, County, Hydrologic Unit Code 12, EcoRegions I-IV, Urban Areas. Overlapping designation boundaries are intersected into fee simple lands in the Vector Analysis File ( https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/6064e0edd34eff1443414d6f...

Fish occurrence data to support high-resolution distribution models and test various community and macroecological hypotheses have not been available at the national scale. We present IchthyMaps, a database of high-quality historical fish occurrences covering fishes of the conterminous United States. Designed on the principles of metacommunity ecology, IchthyMaps is a compilation of presence records from atlases up to 1990, at the resolution of the 1:100,000 National Hydrography Database Plus (NHDPlus) inter-confluence stream segment, readily aggregated into hierarchically coarser units (e.g. hydrologic unit code 8-digit and 12-digit watersheds). IchthyMaps contains about 606,550 presence records for 1,038 species...

We collected environmental DNA (eDNA) data from the Elwha River, home to the world’s largest dam removal project, to track the spatial and temporal patterns of species responses following dam removal. In total, we collected data for 11 different fish taxa, sampled at 25 sites ranging across 56 river kilometers in a wilderness river for 4 years following dam removal. We show that eDNA can effectively be used to determine whether fish have recolonized past former dams, and in some cases determine the spatial extent of that recolonization.

Spatial analysis and statistical summaries of the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) provide land managers and decision makers with a general assessment of management intent for biodiversity protection, natural resource management, and recreation access across the nation. The PAD-US 2.1 Combined Fee, Designation, Easement feature class (with Military Lands and Tribal Areas from the Proclamation and Other Planning Boundaries feature class) was modified to remove overlaps, avoiding overestimation in protected area statistics and to support user needs. A Python scripted process ("CreateVectorAnalysisFileScript.zip" associated item of PAD-US 2.1 Spatial Analysis and Statistics, 2021; https://doi.org/10.5066/P9KJLB3Q)...

Protection Status spatial analysis and statistical summaries of the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) provide land managers and decision makers with a general assessment of management intent to protect biodiversity across the nation and identify areas managed for multiple uses, including natural resource extraction, as represented by the GAP Status Code (see GAP Status Code Definition sheet in all associated Summary Statistics by GAP Status Code Microsoft Excel Workbook download). Area statistics include total acreage, acres by managing agency, and percent protection. These summaries are available for various units of interest to stakeholders: National, State, Department of the Interior Region,...

The GAP National Terrestrial Ecosystems - Ver 3.0 is a 2011 update of the National Gap Analysis Project Land Cover Data - Version 2.2 for the conterminous U.S. The GAP National Terrestrial Ecosystems - Version 3.0 represents a highly thematically detailed land cover map of the U.S. The map legend includes types described by NatureServe's Ecological Systems Classification (Comer et al. 2002) as well as land use classes described in the National Land Cover Dataset 2011 (Homer et al. 2015). These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m x 30 m cell resolution. GAP used the best information available to create the land cover data; however GAP seeks to improve...

GAP species range data are coarse representations of the total areal extent a species occupies, in other words the geographic limits within which a species can be found (Morrison and Hall 2002). These data provide the geographic extent within which the USGS Gap Analysis Project delineates areas of suitable habitat for terrestrial vertebrate species in their species' habitat maps. The range maps are created by attributing a vector file derived from the 12-digit Hydrologic Unit Dataset (USDA NRCS 2009). Modifications to that dataset are described here. Attribution of the season range for each species was based on the literature and online sources (See Cross Reference section of the metadata). Attribution for each...

Gap Analysis Project (GAP) habitat maps are predictions of the spatial distribution of suitable environmental and land cover conditions within the United States for individual species. Mapped areas represent places where the environment is suitable for the species to occur (i.e. suitable to support one or more life history requirements for breeding, resting, or foraging), while areas not included in the map are those predicted to be unsuitable for the species. While the actual distributions of many species are likely to be habitat limited, suitable habitat will not always be occupied because of population dynamics and species interactions. Furthermore, these maps correspond to midscale characterizations of landscapes,...

This dataset contains information about waterfall locations and estimated waterfall heights on five of the main Hawaiian Islands including Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and Hawaii. Initial spatial information was gathered from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the Hawaii Statewide GIS Program, and the World Waterfall Database. Where image quality permitted, the coordinates and spatial attributes from source data were used to verify and improve the quality of waterfall locations using Google Earth Pro (Google Inc. 2017)and the USGS HydroLink Tool. The HydroLink Tool was also used to link data to both the NHDPlusV2.1 and NHD High Resolution datasets by adding NHD addressing...

This dataset represents a species known range extent for Agile Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys agilis) within the conterminous United States (CONUS) based on 2001 ground conditions. This range map was created by attributing sub-watershed polygons with information of a species' presence, origin, seasonal and reproductive use. See Gap Analysis Project Species Range Maps for more information regarding data creation and user constraints. For species specific range information, see the attached Range data.
