Intracoelomic implantation of electronic tags has become a common method in fishery research, but rarely are fish examined by scientists after release to understand the extent that surgical incisions have healed. Walleye (Sander vitreus) are a valuable, highly-exploited fishery resource in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Here, fishery capture of walleye with internal acoustic transmitters combined with a high reward program provided multiple opportunities to examine photographs and quantify the status of surgical incisions. Walleye (n=926) from reef and river spawning populations in Lake Erie and Lake Huron were implanted with acoustic transmitters during spring spawning events from 2011 to 2016. Incisions were closed...

Each line in the file “Lake Michigan fish acoustic data from 2011 to 2016.csv” represents the acoustic data and estimated fish density for a single depth layer of water. Surveys are conducted along transects, transects are divided horizontally into successive intervals, and then within an interval there are multiple successive depth layers. Area backscattering (ABC), mean acoustic size (sigma), and fish density are reported for each unique transect-interval – layer from Lake Michigan in the years 2011-2016. Area backscattering (PRC_ABC), mean acoustic size (sigma), and fish density in the intervals and layers of acoustic survey transects of Lake Michigan in the years 2011-2016. The survey is carried out using a...

Lake Erie Biological Station (LEBS), located in Sandusky, Ohio, is a field station of the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). LEBS is the primary federal agency for applied fisheries science excellence in Lake Erie. Since 2004, LEBS has participated in a collaborative, multiagency effort to assess forage fish populations in the western basin of Lake Erie. Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. The objectives of this survey were to provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to...

This dataset contains depths and bottom velocities at discreet sampling locations in the St. Clair-Detroit River System. Measurements were made to complement data on fish egg deposition in the St. Clair-Detroit Rivers from 2005-2016. Depth measurements were made with a boat mounted sonar unit at the beginning of spring and fall sampling season from 2005-2016. Water velocities near the river bed were measured in 2013 and 2015 using a handheld velocity meter attached to a 6.8 kg sounding weight. The sounding weight was lowered off the side of a boat to the river bottom and then lifting the weight slighlty off the bottom to ensure the weight and velocity meter were properly oriented with the current, the mean velocity...
Crustacean zooplankton were collected, enumerated, identified, and measured within the St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS). Collections were made using a 0.5 m diameter 153 um zooplankton net. Nets were lowered to ~0.5 m from bottom depth and retrieved. Nets were utilized with a General Oceanics flowmeter to calculate the distance the net traveled. At sites of collection, both temperature (degrees C) and Secchi depth (m) were collected for abiotic influencing factors of the zooplankton community. Collected specimens were narcotized in sugar formalin. Specimens were enumerated, identified, and measured under a dissection microscope. Volumetric estimates (m^-3) were obtained by applying the distance traveled and...

Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2017 data to the set – making it five years of continuous observation.

In 2014, the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station participated in the Coordinated Science and Monitoring Initiative (CMSI) program, a program founded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environment Canada in the 1990s as a means to focus collaborative research attention on one of the five Great Lakes each year (on a rotating schedule) as a means to increase scientific knowledge for Great Lakes restoration. The Lake Erie survey examined the food web across a nearshore to offshore gradient, matching the sampling design the preceding USGS studies of the other four Great Lakes (2010-2013). We sampled all trophic levels in all three lake basins across multiple seasons in order to determine nutrient availability...

Deepwater Sculpin are important in oligotrophic lakes as one of the few fishes that use deep profundal habitats and link invertebrates in those habitats to piscivores. In Lake Ontario the species was once abundant, however drastic declines in the mid-1900s led some to suggest the species had been extirpated and ultimately led Canadian and U.S. agencies to elevate the species’ conservation status in the 1990s. Following multiple decades of annual surveys with no captures, Deepwater Sculpin were first caught in low numbers in 1996 and by the early 2000s there were indications of population recovery. These data sets were used to update the status of Lake Ontario Deepwater Sculpin through 2016 to inform resource management...

Acoustic telemetry is a popular tool for the study of fish spatial ecology. In acoustic telemetry, fish are captured, surgically implanted with an acoustic transmitter or ‘tag’, and then released back into the environment. Networks of autonomous, stationary receivers then are used to track the movements of tagged individuals over long periods of time (> 1 year). Each acoustic receiver records the date, time, and unique transmitter code (or ID) for each acoustic tag detection. This data set contains detection data for 282 acoustic-tagged lake sturgeon that were captured and released into the Detroit River, St. Clair River, and Lake Huron between 2011 and 2015. Movements of acoustic-tagged individuals were tracked...

Diet contents of Deepwater Sculpin (Myoxocephalus thompsonii) were identified, enumerated, and measured to monitor the changes in the offshore benthic fish community within Lake Huron. Collections were made using a 21-m headrope with a 4.76mm square mesh cod-end with 10 minute contour trawl tows.. Deepwater Sculpin collected from the USGS fall forage (2003-2005 and 2010-2014) were counted and weighed en masse on board research vessel. Individual weights (nearest 0.001g) and measurements (0.1mm) were conducted in laboratory setting. Stomachs were extracted in laboratory setting (from esophogus to pyloric ceaca). Stomachs were stored in ethanol for later dissection. Stomach contents were removed in petri dish. All...

This is a tabular data set that contains morphological and experimental data for a study testing if silver stage American eel respond to each other's odor. Inside a laboratory flume, downstream-swimming eels were exposed to both live (putative attractant) and dead (putative repellent) conspecific washings to determine whether their trajectory of downstream movement, level of activity, or time spent inside targeted areas of the arena changed after exposure. One CSV file contains eel morphological data and the other CSV file describes behavioral responses.

The USGS Lake Erie Biological Station’s East Harbor sampling program began in 1961 with the commissioning of the research vessel Musky II. It is the longest known continuous trawl survey in Lake Erie. In addition to spanning over 50 years, the data series is unique for three prominent design elements: 1) sampling was conducted at three depth strata; 2) replicate trawl samples were collected at each depth stratum; and 3) sampling was conducted during both day and night. Unlike other trawl series collected in Lake Erie, and throughout the Great Lakes, the East Harbor program is the only one to combine these sampling practices in a single survey. In 2012, the original vessel used since the inception of the East Harbor...

Bacteria were isolated from seeds of non-native Phragmites australis (haplotype M) then representatives were evaluated for their capacities to become intracellular in root cells, and their effects on: 1.) germination rates and seedling growth, 2.) susceptibility to damping-off disease, and 3.) mortality and growth of competitor plant seedlings (dandelion (Taraxacum officionale F. H. Wigg) and curly dock (Rumex crispus L.)). The experiments included the following assessments of Phragmites-associated bacteria (Pseudomonas spp, strains Sandy LB4 (Pseudomonas fluorescens) and West 9 (Pseudomonas sp.)): capacity for plant growth promotion (using Poa annua seeds), Poa annua and Phragmites australis seed germination and...
