Actual evapotranspiration (ETa) values estimated for specified areas including 1) total county areas; 2) potentially irrigated areas within each county; and 3) mapped extents of irrigated lands within each county provided by some states. These ETa estimates were provided to the USGS National Water Use Science Project by the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Gabriel Senay and MacKenzie Friedrichs, written communication, 2/20/2017) and are based on 1-square kilometer resolution 2015 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data analyzed through the operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model using methods of Senay and others (2013). The surface water water-quality data were compiled from Water Quality Portal (https://www.waterqualitydata.us/) (National Water Quality Monitoring Council, 2015), USGS’s NAWQA Project’s data compilation (Oelsner and others, 2017) or the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana Bureau of Mines, 2021), The compilation contains data for chloride, pH, specific conductance, sulfate, total dissolved solids (TDS) collected between water year 1970 to 2014. In addition 10 metals (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, selenium strontium, and zinc) analyzed during water years 1993 through 2014. National Water-Quality Monitoring Council, 2015, Water Quality Portal: National Water-Quality Monitoring Council,...
The spatial extents of verified irrigated lands were compiled from various federal and state sources across the nation and combined into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) geodatabase for the purpose of model training and validation. In cooperation with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), researchers at the University of Wisconsin (UW) generated a nation-wide map of irrigated lands using remote-sensing techniques that will be incorporated into future irrigation water-use models. The verified spatial data varies in scope, accuracy, and time period represented, but in general represents GIS coverages (polygons) of agricultural land irrigated for at least some period during 2002–17. Data from 14 states were provided...

In 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Blackfeet Water Department, initiated a multi-year hydrologic investigation of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The investigation was designed to increase understanding of the water resources of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation including Birch Creek which forms the southern boundary of the reservation. Streamflow is controlled in the headwaters of Birch Creek through the outflow from Swift Reservoir at Swift Dam. The data included in this data release was provided by the Pondera County Canal and Reservoir Company (PCCRC) and includes Swift Reservoir outflow daily streamflow values and daily streamflow values for three downstream diversions from...

This dataset contains water-use estimates for 2015 that are aggregated to the county level in the United States. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS's) National Water Use Science Project is responsible for compiling and disseminating the Nation's water-use data. Working in cooperation with local, State, and Federal agencies, the USGS has published an estimate of water use in the United States every 5 years, beginning in 1950. Water-use estimates aggregated to the State level are presented in USGS Circular 1441, "Estimated Use of Water in the United States in 2015" (Dieter and others, 2018). This dataset contains the county-level water-use data that support the state-level estimates in Dieter and others 2018. This...
