In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project of the National Water-Quality Program. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project is to determine how water-quality conditions change over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable monitoring has been conducted on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Outside of the NAWQA project, the USGS and other Federal, State, and local agencies also have collected long-term water-quality data to support their own assessments of changing water-quality conditions. Data from these multiple sources have been combined to support...

This dataset contains estimates of the yearly sum of total nitrogen and total phosphorus (hereafter referred to as nitrogen and phosphorus) inputs from fertilizer applications and from manure applications in selected Chesapeake Bay watersheds from 1985 through 2012.
thumbnail
The dataset contains estimates for total nitrogen and total phosphorus loads from point sources, combined sewer overflows, wastewater treatment plants that discharge to surface water for selected Chesapeake Bay watersheds. For source information, please refer to the process steps in this metadata report.

The dataset contains estimates for total phosphorus flux from wastewater treatment plants that discharge to surface water within the Red River of the North Basin in the United States and subbasins. Shapefiles defining the subbasins are available as part of the same data release in which these data are published. Estimates of wastewater treatment plant total phosphorus flux (or load) were calculated by Tammy Ivanhnenko for the years 1978, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. Flux estimates were based on the average discharge from the wastewater treatment plants and treatment level, both reported as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Watershed Needs Survey,...

This metadata report documents a shapefile of watershed boundaries for 84 selected United States Geological Survey (USGS) water quality stations that are part of the Chesapeake Bay non-tidal network (NTN).

The dataset contains estimates of annual flow and annual flux in kilograms for six sites in the Red River of the North Basin (identified as basin 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8). The shape files that are part of this data release document the basins and the streamgage locations are also provided in an associated shape file.

Phosphorus estimates, from fertilizer and manure, for the period 1970-2012 for eight subbasins (see accompanying shapefiles) of the Red River of the North Basin in kilograms per square kilometer.
thumbnail
These data report the percent of crop acreage, within each basin (basins 1-8, see accompanying shapefiles), enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).
thumbnail
This dataset contains values of soils, climate, hydrologic, topographic, and other geographic characteristics such as drainage area. These are considered "static" characteristics, which do not change over the time period of this study.
thumbnail
This dataset provides estimates of annual and seasonal precipitation for selected Chesapeake Bay watersheds. Season 1 is November-February; season 2 is March-June; and season 3 is July-October.

This dataset contains watershed means of estimated percent impervious surfaces for three time periods: 1992, 2002, and 2012. Estimates are based on coefficients derived from comparing land use of the 2012 NAWQA Wall-to-wall Anthropogenic Land-use Trends (NWALT) product to the 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) imperviousness, then applying those coefficients to previous years (1974-2002) of the NWALT dataset.

These data report the percent of agricultural land, within each selected Chesapeake Bay watershed, that is enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), based on county-level data for each year from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency.
