The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is actively investigating the use of innovative remote-sensing techniques to estimate surface velocity and discharge of rivers in ungaged basins and river reaches that lack the infrastructure to install conventional streamgaging equipment. By coupling discharge algorithms and sensors capable of measuring surface velocity, streamgage networks can be established in regions where data collection was previously impractical or impossible. One of the remote-sensing techniques uses a Doppler (velocity) radar (QCam) mounted and integrated on a small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS or drone). QCam measures the along-track surface velocity by spot dwelling in a river cross section at a vertical...

Geospatial datasets were developed to estimate the depth to the top of the Dakota Sandstone in feet below land surface datum within the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in Colorado. This study was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. One dataset was created for the contours showing the altitude (in feet) of the top of the Dakota Sandstone (shapefile Kd_talt_hand), and a second dataset was created for polygons representing the outcrops of the Dakota Sandstone (shapefile Dakota_outcrop_poly). These two datasets were used in combination with USGS digital elevation models (DEM) to create a dataset for the depth of the top of the Dakota Sandstone below the land surface...

In 2013, the Regional Stream Quality Assessment (RSQA) study was started as part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project. One of the objectives of the RSQA is to characterize the relationships between water-quality stressors and stream ecology and subsequently determine the relative effects of these stressors on aquatic biota within the streams (Garrett and others, 2017; Journey and others, 2015; Coles and others, 2019; Sheibley and others, 2017; May and others, 2020). The study was implemented in five regions across the United States (U.S.); the Midwest (MSQA) in 2013, the southeast (SESQA) in 2014, the Pacific Northwest (PNSQA) in 2015, the northeast (NESQA) in 2016,...

Note: This data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9HGC2V4 During review of the parent report for this data release, Walton-Day and others (2021), an error was discovered in the reported bromide injectate concentration. In addition, rounded bromide concentrations reported in version 1 were not sufficient to allow a user to recalculate and replicate reported stream-discharge values. Also, the values of stream discharge stored in the NWIS database and available to the public are rounded to one decimal place, which does not allow accurate recalculation and replication of the metal loading results presented in the parent report, Walton-Day and others (2021). In this...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Colorado Springs Utilities, has been collecting topographic data annually since 2012 at 10 study areas along Fountain Creek, Colorado. The 10 study areas are located along Fountain Creek between Colorado Springs and the confluence of Fountain Creek and the Arkansas River in Pueblo. This data release presents topographic survey data, Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) survey data, elevation rasters, and elevation-change rasters collected or generated in 2021 as part of that monitoring effort. Topographic survey points were collected using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems (RTK-GNSS). These point data, along with lidar point clouds, were used to...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected geomorphic monitoring data in cooperation with the Upper Colorado River Wild and Scenic Stakeholder Group. This data release contains cross-section geometry and sediment-size distribution data collected from five sites on the Upper Colorado River, Colorado during April 6-8, 2022. The five sites selected for monitoring were located at the Pumphouse Recreation Area, Radium Recreation Site, State Bridge, above Catamount, and below Sweetwater Creek. A cross section was surveyed at each site using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System survey methods to document the channel geometry. All five cross sections are incorporated in this data release and presented in CSV...

Aquifer testing was conducted in the Paradox Valley alluvial aquifer in Montrose County, Colorado, including short-term (slug tests) and long-term (pumping tests) stresses on the hydrologic system to determine hydraulic properties of the aquifer. Slug tests were conducted at four wells in March 2013, with only one well producing data that could be interpreted using analytical solutions. In the other three slug tests, water-level displacement was not instantaneous and displayed substantial noise meaning that the analytical solutions could not be applied. Pumping tests were conducted in March through June of 2013 by initiation of pumping at seven production wells screened in the aquifer and observation of water-level...
Thirteen geospatial datasets were developed to characterize the shallow groundwater system in the Lower Gunnison River Basin, Colorado. These geospatial datasets provide information about regolith thickness and altitude of the bedrock surface underlying regolith and display, in vector and raster formats, the generalized extent and thickness of regolith sediments that comprise the shallow groundwater system in the Lower Gunnison River Basin; display, in raster and vector format, the generalized altitude and configuration of the bedrock surface that comprises the base of the shallow groundwater system in the Lower Gunnison River Basin; provide information about depth to water, altitude of the potentiometric surface,...
This point dataset contains geologic information concerning regolith thickness and top-of-bedrock altitude at selected well and test-hole locations in the Lower Gunnison River Basin in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. Regolith-thickness data were compiled from lithologic logs of wells and boreholes reported by the Colorado Division of Water Resources, U.S. Geological Survey, and Bureau of Reclamation. Bedrock-altitude values were computed from the bedrock altitude raster dataset (bralt). The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

This data release supports the following publication: Mast, M. A., 2018, Estimating metal concentrations with regression analysis and water-quality surrogates at nine sites on the Animas and San Juan Rivers, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2018-5116. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), developed site-specific regression models to estimate concentrations of selected metals at nine USGS streamflow-gaging stations along the Animas and San Juan Rivers. Multiple linear-regression models were developed by relating metal concentrations in discrete water-quality samples to continuously monitored streamflow...

This child page contains sediment-size distribution data collected from five sites on the Upper Colorado River, Colorado, during April 6-8, 2022. The five sites selected for monitoring were located at the Pumphouse Recreation Area, Radium Recreation Site, State Bridge, above Catamount, and below Sweetwater Creek. Pebble counts were performed at each of the five monitoring sites to document sediment-size distributions. All the sediment-size distribution data are presented in CSV files, with one file for each monitoring site.

This dataset consists of contours showing the generalized altitude of the potentiometric surface for the shallow groundwater system in the Lower Gunnison River Basin in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. Potentiometric-surface altitude was contoured from values in the raster dataset potalt. The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

Little is known about how design and testing methodologies affect the macroinvertebrate communities that are held captive in mesocosms. To address this gap, we conducted a 32-day test to determine how seeded invertebrate communities changed once removed from the natural stream and introduced to the laboratory. We evaluated larvae survival and adult emergence in controls from 4 subsequent experiments, as well as corresponding within-river community changes. The experimental streams maintained about 80% of the invertebrates that originally colonized the introduced substrates. Many macroinvertebrate populations experienced changes in numbers through time suggesting that these taxa are unlikely to maintain static populations...
