Abstract (from Journal for Nature Conservation): As a zoonotic disease with unprecedented global impacts, COVID-19 may influence how people prioritize issues related to wildlife conservation. Using a nationally representative sample of US residents, we investigated: (1) how COVID-19 affected the relative importance of conservation issues among adults with different political ideologies, and (2) how the pandemic affected political polarization of conservation issues during the 2020 general election in the United States. Behavioral changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic could negatively affect adolescents’ connection to nature, subsequently impacting health and well-being. We examined the decision making context, decision making process, and management planning associated with the restoration of open pine ecosystems in the Southeast. To better understand the planning practice associated with this system, we assessed the quality of 35 management plans from federal, state, and nongovernmental agencies. We found that newer plans scored higher than older plans, suggesting agencies may be learning to develop better plans over time and indicating older plans should be prioritized for revision. This working group has coordinated a session at the SEAFWA Annual Conference; presented a list of regional species of greatest conservation need developed with SEAFWA Wildlife Diversity Committee. They also conducted interviews with wildlife agency directors to determine how climate uncertainty influences management and policy decisions.
We aimed to gain a better understanding of the management decision context, planning practice and the role and quality of management plans, and decision making processes across the Southeast. To do so, we conducted interviews with decision makers, and developed a questionnaire on the decision making process and climate change perceptions that may be deployed in the future. The results of this project will provide insights for the conservation of open pine systems and other related high priority conservation contexts that the Southeast Climate Science Center and Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy team hope to explore in future efforts.

The Southeast is currently undergoing high rates of population growth, urbanization, and land use change while also experiencing climatic changes. These changes are and will continue to threaten wildlife and their habitats. Executive Summary: Since 2011, the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS) partnership has promoted an overarching vision for landscape conservation in the Southeast. To realize that vision, SECAS provides a forum for collaboration, bringing together state and federal agencies and nonprofit conservation organizations. SECAS also functions as an information hub for science delivery and decision support through the Southeast Conservation Blueprint, a data-driven platform that identifies important areas for conservation and restoration. Consortium Principal Investigators lead Working Groups on a variety of global change topics that draw on their scientific strengths and interests. Longleaf pine (LLP, Pinus palustris) has been reduced to 3–5% of its original range, but may be particularly resilient to conditions associated with climate change including drought, severe storms, and increased prevalence of pests. Despite the critical role of LLP in building climate resilient ecosystems, little is known about how landscape managers in the region have considered climate change in planning efforts.
